technical problems

Maybe someone here can help me since I'm tech illiterate to some degree. The past few days vmk has been running extremely slow on my computer, not the logging on process, but actually going through the game. There is a long delay just trying to move the character or go between rooms. After about 15 mins I get a popup message from shockwave with an exclamation point. It says something like, "out of memory, purging all castmembers". Then the screen darkens and I don't get a booted message but vmk is frozen and I have no choice but to close out the window.

I've cleaned and compressed files to no avail. Any idea on what is causing this? :confused3
 
I'm more computer-savvy.

A virus is possible, but I doubt it. The signs of that would include your computer automatically shutting down or not let you onto certain websites; normally the ones that you can use to get rid of it. So, no Symantec.com, McAfee.com, safer-networking.org, or anything that can get rid of the virus.

Try cleaning out the cookies. I had the same thing happen to me, and when I cleaned out the cookies (which, by the way, are little bits of data certain websites store on your computer), VMK worked again.

On Internet Explorer, go to Tools--->Internet Options. Under Browsing History, select "Delete..." and then, when another window comes up, press "Delete Cookies." That should do it.

Again, I am tech-savvy, so if that doesn't work, I have a whole arsenal of other options to make it work, including free software that can keep out the bad stuff that can get into a computer.
 
Well, DH is obsessive about virus scans so I know it isn't that. I tried the cookies thing and it hasn't helped either. Any other ideas?

This is the same thing I get if I open more than one window and use the second window to log in and out multiple characters. If this is not the case you might try deleting all temporary internet files.
 
Yes, I've done that too...no temporary files, cookies, open windows.....just a clean vmk slate and I'm still getting the message. :sad2:

Does he run Adaware and/or Spybot, too?
 
Yes, he runs both of those...no viruses. Well, for now until the problem is figured out or resolved I guess I'm on vmk hiatus. I have no other ideas on what to do. It's been this way all week to the point where I can't even stay on long enough to get all of my NPC credits, let alone play a game before the popup shuts me out. Bummer. :guilty: :badpc:
 
I don't use firefox, my internet is fast enough.. However, you could try downloading fire fox, and the fast fox add on. It helps ALOT.

Just a long shot, but:
Have you tried removing Shockwave and reinstalling the most recent version?
