technical problems with iphone4 SHOCKING!

Sounds like the beef is with AT&T, not Apple or the iPhone.

Hmm. Might be better to direct your anger toward the right place.

One thing I find interesting is that Verizon was first offered the iPhone...but they didn't care for Apple's provisions (the app store remaining property of Apple, not Verizon and so on) so they passed. They thought so much of themselves they passed on a great phone.

Oh well. I switched from Verizon for the iPhone along with several of my very best friends. None of us have regretted it. It works for us, so we're happy with it. I fully understand what works for me may not work for you...but I'm not going to sit here and attack your preferences or try to force my opinions on you when I'm perfectly happy with what I have.

Hope your day gets better...seems like it must have been a pretty bad one.

Good point about Verizon passing on it first. Wonder if they're kicking themselves now? Or perhaps they are still fine with not giving up so much control. I must say I really hate how carriers lock down phones. The phones have functionality in them but the carrier choses to turn it off for the model they carry.

I switched from Sprint to AT&T (then Cingular) for the Razr. I then switched back to Sprint to go on my family's plan. Switched back to AT&T with the iPhone 3G. I feel like I've been doing the carrier cha cha! At least now the carriers are starting to consider retaining customers rather than just getting new ones. Good for AT&T and Verizon for allowing early upgrades.

Never have issues with AT&T service. My understanding is that the main complaints are around giant cities like New York, where you have huge populations of smart phone users, tall buildings, and other such factors that all lead to network overload or decreased signal strength. Guess what? Verizon would have the same exact problems in NYC as AT&T if they had the iPhone exclusive and then people would be railing against Verizon for their crappy coverage and the shoe would be entirely on the other foot. If you want to live in a city with 80 gagillion iPhone users in it you must accept the consequences.

Is that really the reason AT&T has problems in NYC? Too many iPhones clogging up the system? I never heard that. Fact is that less than half of wireless phone users are smartphone users - regular cell phones still lead. In NY, do we know that there are that many more iPhones and AT&T smartphones being used that it clogs up the system, as opposed to all the Blackberries, Droids, Palm Pre's etc. for Verizon? I don't buy that whichever carrier has the iPhone suffers the curse of dropped calls. In a city where non-smartphone calls still rule the day, and where there is Verizon, Cingular, Sprint/Nextel, T-Mobile, TracFone, Virgin Mobile, etc. to choose from - each with its collection of phones - I find it hard to believe that the cause of AT&T's problems is simply that there are so many iPhone users.

Unless you can educate me otherwise. I admit I am far from an expert.

This is one of the reasons AT&T plans (may already) provide wifi access in NYC. They want to relieve some of the pressure on the network.

I have a droid incredible, it is a good phone, although I have had issues with the battery, the device rebooting randomly, and the camera is hit or miss. I hope the pending froyo update fixes some of these things.

I am typing this message on an iPad, if Verizon launched the iPhone 4 on their network tomorrow, I would pre-order my phone. Apple just makes things work easier together.

I want a good product with good service at a good price and Verizon has shown they have the ability to do this much better than AT&T. (dont believe me, try taking your Iphone to an AT&T store and tell them you dropped it in the toilet and need a new one, Verizon would replace it on the spot.)

That is simply not true. Verizon has done nothing but laugh at me when I have had trouble with my phone. They will not give you a new battery without charging $50, replace a phone forget about it. I know people how have had their iPhones replaced by Apple and AT&T outside of the warranty coverage.

In Western PA Verizon is the company that feels they have a hold on the market and can treat their customers badly. I was very happy to switch away from them and their incredibly rude "customer service" sales people.

Again, if Verizon works for you please enjoy, but your experience is your experience, no one else's.

I've had both AT&T and Verizon Wireless for service and noticed that Verizon had better customer service. Not that AT&T was bad, just that Verizon was "more polished".

Consumer Reports Magazine has a yearly feature that rates all the cell phone companies in several areas by surveying their readers across the country. Verizon Wireless has consistently come out on top whereas AT&T typically comes out closer to the bottom.

Now, that has not been my experience with AT&T but obviously it has with many others.

This reminds me of the Mac vs PC discussions. My feeling is that whatever makes you happier, use that one.

It you ask me for my preferences, I'm one data point but I know what I like and why. We had Verizon for 6 or 7 years with multiple different phones. I live in Rochester NY, work in Boston and my daughter lives on NYC. When I'm in Boston I talk to people in NYC and Rochester every day, sometimes for a long time. When we had Verizon we all had Verizon phones and I had at least one dropped call every time I'd make a call from Boston to my family in NYC or Rochester. My service from Rochester was pretty good and in some cases very good. I got tired of the dropped calls, hated the way Verizon locked some things such as the ability to transfer photos directly to a computer without sending them through their network and made other things difficult or expensive like using ring tones. And I wanted to try an iPhone. We all switched to iPhones a year ago and could not be happier. Since switching I have had 1 or 2 dropped calls in total and make calls from the same places. My daughter in NYC has had a few more dropped calls but she has not complained and I talk to her every day, sometimes for an hour and we don't have a dropped calls. None of us have had to call the AT&T service line so I can't speak to their service. We've had no billing problems. Bottom line - I am happy with AT&T and really like my iPhone. I won't be moving up to the new iPhone for a while. The one I have serves my needs just fine for now.

As for the network overload in NYC and the number of iPhones, basic phones don't use much bandwidth but iPhones use huge amounts if you are streaming or downloading large files. From what I've read it's about 10 or 20% of the iPhone users that use 80% of the network. It's AT&T's responsibility to keep up with it or they will end up loosing out eventually. Maybe it's just the places my daughter hangs out in NYC but when I visit her I have to laugh at the number of people I see with iPhones. It feels like more than half the people there have them and I have not noticed that in other places I travel. I'm sure that's not the case but the last time I was there we were laughing at the number of iPhones compared to other phones.

That's right! iPads are status symbols (if worn properly)...
