Greetings! Welcome to our experimental pre-trip report for our next trip to Walt Disney World in Spring, 2009! We had our first-ever WDW trip in May, 2008 and absolutely LOVED it. (You can read our first trip report by clicking on the link in my signature.)

Oh, I am forgetting to introduce the cast! Please forgive me. We are the Renfroes (or Team Renfroe, as we refer to ourselves.) If you've ever seen the National Lampoon's Vacation movies, we have a lot in common with the Griswolds!

DSC00393.jpg

That's me...the tall, bald one. (I'm Alan, but you can call me Clark)
DW - (We'll call her Ellen)
DS11 - (We'll call him Rusty)
DD8 - (We'll call her Audrey)

As we were planning our May, 2008 trip, we found out about the DISboards. The information on this web site was so incredibly helpful to us in planning our first trip that we were hooked! We set up our account in March '08 and put together a trip report following our trip in May. Writing the trip report was SO MUCH FUN that we are now going to attempt this pre-trip report even though our plans have not yet been made. Readers of our trip report encouraged me to start a new pre-trip report. When I told them that we didn't know what our plans would be just yet, they responded by saying, "that's the point! Readers of your pre-trip report get to learn about your plans as they are revealed!" Cool.

SO, here is what we're thinking: We saved diligently for our last trip and were able to go for 6 nights with Deluxe Dining, Water Parks & More option, and stayed at Coronado Springs Resort. Our next trip's budget will likely not be as plentiful as our last one, so we may have some decisions to make.

Some initial thoughts:

Who: Team Renfroe (Myself, DW, DD who will be 9 soon, and DS who will be 12 on our next trip.)

What: Our glorious return to the World

Where: hmmm....don't know. It will definitely be on site...that I DO know. We LOVED Coronado Springs and would love to go back. However, we are considering Port Orleans as another option, just to switch things up. From a budgetary standpoint, the POP Century or one of the All-Stars may also be options.

When: Probably May 16 - 22, 2009, but still unsure. DW would like to go earlier in May, but my job may not permit that. Spring Break might also be an option. We LOVED going in May because the crowds were not bad at all. When I read the trip reports of those who go during peak seasons, and I read about standby waits of 120 minutes or more, I think May looks great. :thumbsup2

Why: For FUN!! DUH!! :cool1: But seriously, our primary motivation is the fact that this is a special time in our lives. There will only be one chance to go to WDW with a 12-year-old son and a 9-year-old daughter! We'd better take it!! Previous to our Disney World trip in May, 2008, we took annual family vacations, but they were primarily to the beach. (I am a beach person and would love to live somewhere on a coast someday.) The beach will always be there...but this time in our lives will not. SO, it is unanimous among each Griswold...er....Renfroe family member that we return in '09!

How: By saving money now, planning ahead, and keeping up with the latest info from our DIS friends!

So, we've got a long road ahead of us until that next trip...but doing this Pre-Trip Report will help us pass the time! We will share our planning process with you all, as well as major events in our lives over the next few months, including a July '08 trip to Panama City Beach & Destin, Florida, football season :woohoo: , the holidays, spring cleaning, etc. SO....I hope you'll enjoy hanging with the Renfroes over the next few months! Welcome to our experimental Pre-Trip Report! :goodvibes

Alan

Okay, I'm here...first one to sign in I guess...

Alan, here's one good tip--if you don't have the Disney Visa, consider getting it. Just think of all the Disney DOLLARS you and rack up between now and Spring 2009....

**FREE** Disney trip money -- just think of the possibilities! :thumbsup2

We have one, and I'm almost up to the amount I need to buy our Halloween Party tickets! :thumbsup2

Hello my friend! Glad you found the new PTR.

I am definitely going to be getting the Disney Visa. I was reading last week that they have 0% APR for the first 6 months, so I am going to wait for another month or so before applying so that I can use it to buy Christmas gifts, charge our next trip, etc. Great advice, thanks! What are some of the things you can earn with the card?

What are some of the things you can earn with the card?

Well, basically, the only thing you earn are Disney Dollars--1 Disney Dollar for every $100 put on the card.

We started using the card in lieu of our other cards (except a Visa card we found that gives you a flat 5% rebate on gas purchases)!

You can use the Disney Dollars for anything Disney-related (they'll send you the "small print" when you get your card). I think you can buy movie tickets to Disney movies, Disney stuff, etc.

Normally, we move the DD to the Reward Card (which you request via the website) when we are ready to head to Disney World. That way, I know I have all the dollars on there (don't want any going "wasted")! :goodvibes

Then, when we get to Disney World for our vacation, we just use our KTTW like normal; however, when it's time to checkout, I give my husband the reward card, and they apply it to whatever balance we might have.

I've also used it during a quick Spring Break trip (outside the Parks); I think I used it for Putt-Putt and some other Disney-related purchases.

I mean, if you are GOING TO CHARGE ANYWAY, you might as well charge on a Disney Visa and get free Disney Dollars, right?

...and oh yeah, that reminds me--you are right about the 0% financing....I like to put trip payments on the card too.

For example, for our trip coming up in September, it is going to cost us $1,500, so I put the $200 deposit on the card, and I got 6 months, 0% financing on that $200.

Then, every time I put another payment down, I always apply it to my credit card instead of sending a check, etc. So, really, you get 0%, 6-month financing ON EVERY INSTALLMENT you make on your trip! It is insane really, because you could in reality be paying for your one trip FOREVER! LOL....

BUT, I don't care how crazy it is; I like the fact that they do it this way. It makes Disney trips affordable for everyone when you can pay a little bit at a time on them.

I'm really glad they give Disney Visa cardholders this option.

Yes disney visa would be a great choice you can pay for your trip and get points to use in WDW!!
I don't know if you know about the free dining that WDW offers in late Aug-Sept.?? But if you have a disney visa you have 1st choice!!
If you would want to go in Sept. then you can get free dining!!

WE STAYED AT POP LAST YEAR AND LOVED IT !!
FREE DINING IS GREAT !!

Absolutely!!! You've definitely convinced me. And with 0%, I will probably use it to pay for all of my Christmas shopping and just try to pay the balance off before being charged any interest. That should be worth a few Disney Dollars!

Thanks!

We would LOVE to go during the free dining offer, but my job is absolutely overwhelming during football season. It really is an amazing offer! That is awesome that your family got $3K worth of free food - wow!

Glad to hear that you loved the POP! We are leaning towards staying at the POP if we do a value resort.

Forgot to mention about Pop.

Even though I tell my kids (every time we watch a Travel Channel special), "There's my goal resort--either Wilderness or Animal Kingdom Lodges," we normally stay at POP.

We stayed at Sports one time, but I was just a little bit disappointed. The Pop is a notch above the other three value resorts--not room-wise or anything like that, but their amenities are better (IMHO).

I love the food court and check-in building. It's really nice. We even did like you and your son did one night.

One night, my husband and my then-7YO were passed out for the night, but my 10YO and I were hungry, so about 10 or 11 (yes, PM), we headed down to the food court area--IT WAS PACKED!

But, we had fun. We were talking about how neat it was to be eating (for free, mind you) at 11 o'clock at night at Disney and watching The Disney Channel to boot from our table!

People were outside swimming and buses were "dumping" loads of people coming in from the Parks. It was hopping at late hour!

It's a fun resort; I suggest it any day over the mods just because of the money it will save you....

Hi Alan! :wave2: I'm so glad you've started a PTR! May '09 may sound like far away but it'll be here before you know it. And in the meantime, so much planning to do! Which is more than half the fun! ;)

Your FL beach trip must be coming up soon. Have a great time. Looking forward to hearing about it and your WDW plans as they develop! :thumbsup2

I'm tagging along for the ride--I loved your trip report so much I don't want to miss out on the fun of the pre-trippie. Hope you're having a great summer.

Hi Alan ... enjoyed your last trip report ... your family reminds me a lot of mine and we kid about being just like the Griswalds ... although my kids are a bit older ... my oldest - my son is off to VA Tech next month. We have always stayed at the Moderates until last December when we decided to try and save a little! Anyway we stayed at the POP and it was great! With the extra money we saved my son and I scuba dived at Epcot and the whole family went to Cirque de Soleil! Really a great trip and the Disney Visa is a good choice too. Looking forward to your planning.

Signing on! I love Pop, we stayed there as a family in 06 and I'll be there next month. It is such a fun resort and I loved the Food Court and Gift Shop. The unshared buses were a plus too!

Our January trip is at CSR and I am catching up on your last report and enjoying your pictures! That looks like such a beautiful place, I can't wait to stay there!

Allyson :)

I'm so excited to see another Team Renfroe report. If you are considering another moderate, check out the Caribbean Beach Resort. They are doing a pool renovation now so I assume it should be done by then. We stayed there many years ago and really enjoyed it. We stayed at POR last year and liked it. It was cool to take the boat over to DTD. Looking forward to almost a year of pre-trip report from the Renfroes!

Yay , one entire year with the Renfroes! :yay:. I'm humming (holiday ro-o - ad) from National Lampoon's Vacation! I'm so excited about this report. The wheres, whens and hows of Disney, Renfroe style! :thumbsup2

The where......We stayed at Pop. We had two rooms and we are a family of 4 (adjoining rooms of which we kept the door open.) It helped out with the size of the room. 2 boys 7 & 13 and sharing beds is not an option for them. You may want to consider the suites at All-star also. If you are going during value season this year, you will save a bit on the final cost and, of course, if you get a pin code, the WL and AKL are good options. Spring Break is generally a crazy busy time :scared1: . Free dining starts the end of August through middle or near end of September. I'm surprised there was no bounceback offer in your room that you could have booked for next year. (Call the front desk of CSR and ask if there was.) Though they usually say you have to book before you leave and pay the $200 deposit, if it was an oversite on your part and since it has not been that long, they may honor it). It's worth a try right!

I'm subscribing for the long haul! (lets face it, you have a fan club!)

Yay I have the Renfroes back in my life! I am so excited to be a part of the ptr Alan. Aaron and I are planning a trip for my birthday and our rough dates are similar to yours so I can steal er borrow all your ideas. :rotfl:

Great information, DCanoli! We are strongly considering the POP. I subscribed to a couple of POP threads today and I've been impressed with what I've seen and read.

Basically, if prices remain the same in 2009, we are looking at $99 per night at the POP vs. $175 per night at one of the mods. For 6 nights, that's a difference of $456 before taxes. I have to ask myself, "are the mods worth the difference?" :confused3

Yay! Christine is here too! :cool1: Thanks for joining the trip.

We leave on Sunday for Panama City Beach! I'm getting excited, but not nearly as excited as I am about our return trip to WDW next spring!

I'm tagging along for the ride--I loved your trip report so much I don't want to miss out on the fun of the pre-trippie. Hope you're having a great summer.

Cool! Bibbidi is here too! Our summer has been terrific - I hope yours has been great as well.

That's cool! I would love to do the Cirque de Soleil! I saw Mystere in Las Vegas about 10 years ago and loved it. I know DW, DS, and DD would love the Cirque.

I'm definitely going to be applying for the Disney Visa - I'm just going to wait until a little closer til Christmas shopping time.

Hello Allyson! Welcome aboard! You will LOVE CSR! It is really beautiful and peaceful. We loved the pool area: the Jaguar water slide and Siesta's pool bar. On any other vacation, I could have hung out at the pool all day!

I'm hearing lots of good things about the POP. Depending on budget, we may be leaning that way.

I'm so excited to see another Team Renfroe report. If you are considering another moderate, check out the Caribbean Beach Resort. Hey bizneydizney! Great to see you here, and the Renfroes are glad to have you along for the ride.

We considered doing CBR for this last trip and when we found out about the pool renovation, that was the deciding factor in our choice to go with Coronado Springs. We LOVED CSR! I would consider CBR, for sure.

Hi Alan!:wave2: Glad to be starting this ride with you. Happy planning!

What's up, bucci818! Welcome aboard!

Hahahaha:rotfl2: :rotfl: LOVE IT!! Let's sing together: Holiday RO -o - o - o - ad! That's great!

Okay, so tell me more about these pin codes. I would LOVE to try Wilderness Lodge. I like the location and love the theme.

I agree with you about spring break. My day job is at a University, so I am off for an entire week at Spring Break, along with the kids. However, I have heard WDW is absolutely PACKED during that period of time, not to mention that the rates are considered to be peak season. I am 90% sure we are going to stick with May.

Good idea about contacting CSR about a bounceback offer. :thumbsup2 I'll give that a try!

Glad to have you along for the ride! Fan club...aww...I'm blushing!

:cool1: Cool! Michelle & Aaron are here too! Wouldn't it be cool if you guys end up going the same week as us! Anyway, glad to have you along for the ride. We can share our planning ideas!

Hello everyone! So, let me catch you up a bit on what has gone on in the lives of the Renfroes since our return from Disney on May 24, 2008.

On June 3, DW and I celebrated our 13-year wedding anniversary! :lovestruc

On June 5, DW and I went to see Jimmy Buffett in concert at Lakewood Amphitheatre in Atlanta, GA. Awesome show! :thumbsup2 (I am a HUGE Buffett fan!) :worship:

The Griswolds....er....Renfroes decided we needed a new family truckster! I was driving a Mitsubishi Montero Sport, which was getting about 15 miles per gallon. (Fortunately, I live 8 blocks from my office!) Anyway, the SUV was becoming cumbersome and DW has been wanting a van for a long time. Our kids are at the age where they want their friends to tag along with us....so we needed more room. We drove DW's mother's Nissan Quest to Disney World in May and we really liked it. After test driving several vans, (and doing my obsessive-compulsive online research,) we decided to buy a Honda Odyssey. We live in Jacksonville, Alabama, and the Odysseys are made just down the road in Lincoln, Alabama. Although I've always been resistant to owning a minivan, I've always wanted a Honda. So I took a notch out of my "man card" and gave in to the mentality of the minivan! Actually, it makes great sense for our family. It has much more room (8 passengers,) it gets better gas mileage (about 22 miles per gallon,) and our payment is only $8 more than what we were paying for the previous vehicle.

Anyway, here is the new "family truckster":

I know, I know....it's not metallic pea! no wood paneling! You may think you hate it now, but wait til you drive it!

I can't wait to drive this baby to Disney World next spring! :cool1:
