Team 'Ohana 2009: No One Left Behind

Good morning, cousins!

It looked like dubious weather for a waterfront 5K - the wipers were going on the way to the race, and the temp was a glorious 55º F. Even so, the brave and bold of Northern Michigan were undeterred. And I wasn't deterred either. It was a nice run this morning, actually. It's a fun course with not one but two out and back sections, a dirt road section and also a running past a fire station section! I managed to trounce last year's time with my new course record of 30:17! That's almost 4 minutes better than last year. Although for brevity's sake, I guess I did say 4 on Facebook. :rolleyes1 I was also 47 seconds faster than my last 5K in May which was a flat, paved course. It was good enough for 2nd Place in my age. I am still looking for that next sub-30 5K. I have no idea how I did it that day in New Prague and never again since then. :confused3

I was a little disappointed that there were no door prizes this year, but they did have bananas and donuts at the finish. I never want a donut after a 5K. I did see some people eating them, though. Mostly young men.

Hope everyone has a great Saturday!

 to everyone for their pet woes. I've been giving my 10 year old pooch extra lovin this week as you have all reminded me what an important member of the family she is.

Jeanne: I love the picture of the proposal--so cool :goodvibes You'll have to keep us posted on wedding plans. Good luck with the NYC training.

Debra: I hope you are feeling better, we miss you around here when you don't post.

Corinna: I hope the race went well today. :cheer2:

Richard: It never takes arm twisting to get us to goto Beaches and Cream-- name the time and we're there. DH would probably do summit plummet, I would happily watch from the sidelines and laugh at you guys.

Mike: nice to see you on this thread-- I think there can never be too many Mr Incredibles, why not go for red spandex? :rotfl: The only other spandex wearer I can think of is Peter Pan but somehow that doesn't fit the running image.

As for me, I've been super busy with some time to lurk around here but very little posting time. DD's party is coming together nicely and I think I will be able to get everything done. My other good news is that for the first time in a long time I actually had a good run. I did 7 miles yesterday and felt good the whole time with no soreness or issues (maybe the new shoes are working). I feel good today too, so the DL 1/2 may go ok for me afterall and the notion of Goofy does not seem as crazy.

Jeanne - Congrats on the family changes!
Mel - You're going to love Torchwood.
Debra - Ice cream stops on the marathon course, I think you are onto something. You don't own a swimsuit:confused:, what if we decide to throw a hot tub party?
Corinna - Good work on your weekend race!

Uh oh, no posts in near 40 hours! I have killed the thread!:headache:
So sorry everyone, please come back--I promise to behave better (well, maybe a little bit better, maybe....):flower3:

As for now, I'll chime in with a very innocent topic. I usually swim in the afternoon or evening, but today I was trying out the local scholl district's natatorium during a public availability period for wellness swimming. At 6AM, there was hardly anyone else around, and it was a superb facility. The water was the clearest pool water I have ever seen! I also clocked my fastest time for 1500 meters by over 3 1/2 minutes.:yay: I may yet be ready for that Half Ironman race in October.

Have a great Monday everyone!

So that the thread won't die... although this may be the last time you see me this week... my boss had surgery Friday and was supposed to return to work today, but isn't recovering as quickly as he'd hoped so he didn't show today. Hopes to return tomorrow, but it's day to day now. Other girl in the office broke BOTH wrists yesterday when her horse threw her, so she's out indefinitely. That leaves only two of us to handle everything, and we were down to bare bones before. I suspect it's going to be a VERY long week. Running would be nice... I guess the TM is available at 3AM?

Had a good run Saturday with the group. Did the 10 scheduled for the Richmond marathon plan; refused to do the 14 that some were doing. Am determined not to overtrain so that I can continue on toward Goofy once Richmond is done.

Corinna - You should try donuts DURING the race. The Krispy Kreme Run was so much fun! Run 2 miles, eat a dozen, then run 2 miles back.

Richard - Great time on the swim this morning!

Mike - I agree with JenB. Give Mr. Incredible a try! Better yet, you can give the costume a test run in Richmond... :rolleyes1

Must get back to work... :sad2:

Jackie

Jackie - Donuts DURING a race, I'd yack for sure. I can barely even tolerate a full bowl of oatmeal before a run! Did you really eat the donuts and then run 2 more miles?

I can not believe your coworker broke BOTH wrists. That sounds so unlikely and unlucky. Hope she heals well.

Richard - that's great that you've found a new good time and place to swim. I still have not ventured into the whole swimming thing again, but maybe this winter when the sidewalks are all icy. Ironic as that sounds...

Corinna - I must confess, I did not do the complete Krispy Kreme Challenge. DD, her friend, and I split a dozen. I ate 4 before doing the return 2 miles. Many, many people do not make it back with the dozen still on board. There's a lot of dodging necessary for the return route!

Debra & Jeanne - Bill wants me to report on his training progress. He did 12 miles on Saturday! He's even doing mid-week runs too, and obsessing over his training plan. Can't imagine why... :rolleyes1

(For those of you not familiar with the story, my somewhat stubborn DH decided to do the full marathon last January but did not train. His longest run was 6 miles, and he didn't run at all for 3 weeks prior. He did finish, but it was not pretty! Debra and I would have finished much sooner than we did if not for the 5 miles that we walked very slowly with him from miles 20-25.)

Good Evening, Cousins!

I figured I'd better make time to post tonight, because tomorrow will be a total bust. I have Jury Duty, so no DIS time for me...I'm really hoping I don't get impaneled (sp?) on a jury. I've been the foreperson twice, and I really find it almost physically painful. I have to leave the house at 7:15 to make sure I'm settled by 8, lucky me.

So, back to the non TR -TR:

We arrived at Loew's Portofino Bay Hotel, which is an on-site hotel at Universal. The drive to the entry was quite windy, I can't imagine negotiating that at any speed. Hey, this is just like Portofino, Italy! ;) There are classic cars parked out front, and the entire facade is quite gracious and looks just like an Italian village, set on a lake. There are small boats dotting the inner bay area, and vespas parked around it. It's quite a lovely palazzo.

After checking in and making sure we showed our Loew's number (free, and gets you perks), we went to our room. We were lucky to be given a room on the second floor with a balcony (but their separated by hedges, so it's more like a patio) overlooking the Villa pool. This is a more quiet, adult pool. Only abotu 3' deep, but surrounded by padded loungers, cabanas, fountains, plunge pools, and with food service. They also play 50s era music, usually American tunes by Italian singers (think Frankie Valli). I'm not sure if the patio was a room upgrade, we were supposed to be entitled to one if it was available.

This is where the stay kind of runs together. I can't pinpoint specific items to specific days, but I can speak generally about the rest of the trip.

We stayed club level, so we had access to the lounge. We found that breakfast suited us perfectly well -- fresh fruit, pastries, oatmeal, cream of wheat, cold cereal (no Lucky Charms, but they did have Fruit Loops!), juice, milk, tea, coffee, etc. There were Italian ices, yogurt raisins, and mixed nuts in the afternoon, along with chewy granola bars. The pre-dinner appetizers were often quite hefty, I made a meal of them twice. There were fresh veggies and dip and cheese and crackers, plus hot yummies -- things like chicken on a stick, quesadillas, etc. There were also little pasta salads in martini glasses and dessert glasses, plus beer and wine. Speaking of beverages, there were Coke products available at all times, but you had to ask specifically for bottled water, it's kept in the back. Dessert was different every night. There were always cookies, and usually some sort of pastry, too, plus milk. I got in the habit of having hot tea every night before bed, actually that's something I already do at home.

I should go back to the room. The room itself was plenty big with two queen beds, the bathroom was quite large, with separate tub and shower. There was one bathrobe waiting, of course that was for mom. The room had an lcd tv, and a Keurig coffee maker. This is what we use at home, so it was very familiar. The mini bar fridge was stocked pretty tight, but we found room for Nesquick and some lunch meat and cheese. The patio had two chairs and atable, we asked for another chair and they brought one over from next door :confused3 Here is where I decided I was done of reptiles. There were geckos everywhere on the patio. I kept expecting to hear a squish every time I stepped outside. And by the way, the walking path to the Universal parks showed that the geckos are not always able to get out of the way of tourists and the pedicabs :sad2:

We had made a stop at Wal-Mart (which I highly recommend), so we had snacks for the room for when the lounge was not available. Dennis prefers to eat "4th meal", so we had to make sure he wouldn't go hungry!

The hotel's main pool, the Beach pool, has a great slide, and was a very pleasant place to pass an afternoon. Games for the kids every hour, and they bring around little treats -- frozen grapes, slush, etc. DS was not impressed with the dive-in movies, the screen was not that big, and I think he was expecting more.

We visited the 3rd pool, the hillside pool, but did not go in. It was just a cement pond, nothing special.

We were in the gym most mornings. Ok, I skipped 2, but Dennis was always there when it opened at 6. There were plenty of TM's, ellipticals, stairsteppers and Nautilus, plus free weights. I fell in love with their citrus water, it was yummy! The gym is part of the spa, so you have to sign in and if you are not club or a Loew's member there's a fee.

The parking garage is underground, which was nice as it kept the car cooler. Daily parking fees applied, so if you're not going to use a car most days I wouldn't get one.

If anyone has questions, feel free to ask. I'm sure I'm forgetting obvious stuff someone visiting might want to know.

I'll cover eating and riding in a future installment, as well as the wonders of water parks!

Jackie -- I don't know what to say other than :grouphug:

Richard -- Would you believe I almost just forgot to set the Tivo? Thank goodness your post reminded me! :thumbsup2

JenB -- I'm sure the party will be so much fun! What a great age :cake:

Corinna -- Don't you know there's always room for donuts? :rolleyes1:rotfl2:

Jen -- Congratulations on your new job! :yay:

Mel -- Stretch and strengthen sounds good to me. I hope it works out just as you need.

Jeanne -- Totally awesome photos! It sounds like you are planning the landing at Normandy rather than a wedding! :goodvibes

Debra -- I hope you are starting to mend. Did I mention the TM is up and running again? Now I just have to catch it :rotfl:

I just found out I have major deadlines Aug. 14, 17 and 20, and my dad and his wife arrive around the 15th. It's going to be a busy few weeks, and I may not be able to DIS as much at work (then again, I may have to take planned breaks... so I don't burn out :headache:).

Oh, and I was vindicated in my choice not to go to that meeting. Last week 4 women were shot on that street, very close to where I would have been and around that time. I feel like I had a lucky escape.

Can this post get any longer? Nope, I have to cut it off so I can get ready for tomorrow.

Maria :upsidedow

Corinna: congrats on your awesome and placement this weekend!:cheer2::cheer2:

Mike: how 'bout dressing up as Tarzan....with running shoes, of course! :lmao:

Jackie: tell Bill I am MOST impressed! Stay calm at work......it sounds like it's going to be a crazy week.

Maria: tell me more about those Loew's perks......is that why you got upgraded to a club room? Cool!

Jen: congrats on the new job! How's the baby bump coming along?

Deb: feeling better yet? We miss you. BTW, I hated edgar Sawtelle! Unlike most of my book club, i actually liked the ending, but it didn't make up for the draggy middle. They definitely could have hacked 200 pages off that section.

Everyone else: Hi!

Hey all... did 30 minutes of walking fast for a PG woman. I didn't have my Garmin on, but I was doing about 17 minute miles. I think that is pretty good. I was also talking on the phone part of the time as DH called.

Soooo.... Besides that I am working and getting ready for our August trip. The girls have been gone the last 2 days to grandma's. They come home tomorrow.

Jeanne - The belly bump took a big jump the last couple of weeks and I am now in maternity clothes pretty much all the time. I go to the doctor tomorrow. I think I shouldn't have eaten out the last 2 days!!!!

Just FYI - I crazily registered for another race on Saturday - The Venetian Festival Footrace 10K. It's going to be another of those where I pray to stay out of the bottom 10, but that's OK. It's subbing in for a 7 mile tempo this week. My mother is visiting and says she will come and watch. I'm not sure she realizes that running is not that fun a spectator sport and it's a 45 minute ride each way. We'll see.

It has been a little thick this summer, for sure. Thought it might be a nice way to get a Tempo run done, though.

Today's 9 mile LSR got exciting when somewhere between mile 4 and 5, it started to rain and then POUR. I got my ipod shuffle safely tucked away in the waterproof bag and then just SLOGGED through the rest of the run. Faster, in fact than I probably would have run had the weather been less....drenching. I seriously could not have been wetter had I waded into Lake Michigan, fully clothed. I had to do the last 3 miles on the sidewalk because the roads were too full of puddles for me to run on the side. In some places, the entire road was covered in water. By golly, though, I got my 9 miles in. I hope my shoes dry in time for the race Saturday. I may have to run my easy 2 in different shoes tomorrow or Friday, too!

Corinna: great job on the wet run-- my DH has some wet shoes issues and we found they dry much faster if you take out the insoles and stuff the shoe with a washcloth or with newspaper-- something to absorb the moisture, then change it out in the morning to fresh, dry stuffing

JenB - thank you SO much for posting this yesterday. I had meant to stuff my shoes when I got home but it was such a hectic day. I saw your message after I got in from seeing a local production of Beauty and the Beast! And I thought "OH yeah!!!" And MAN, those washclothes were wet this morning. There are fresh ones in now.

I inherited an old "Brisker" here and am considering putting my shoes in THAT if they aren't dry by tomorrow morning!

Just a brief post. We switched to a new internet carrier, and it's considerably slower than our other one (considerably cheaper, too). It works fine for email and Facebook, is much slower with library/databases searches, and times out on the DIS. We're working to resolve this issue, and I'll try to post from coffee shops this weekend. But I haven't been able to do much other than read your posts, and those are the ones that come across my email inbox (infrequently).

I'll try to squeeze in a full response tomorrow, but I'm volunteeering to help set up an expo for a local sprint tri. So if not tomorrow, Saturday for sure.

I haven't forgotten my cousins! I'm sorry to be so MIA, especially since you're there's so much going on.

Oh, btw....It'll take a lot more than ice cream to get me into a skinny dipping hot-tub party. A lot more. Like bourbon. That period of my life was in my 20s. Come to think of it, there was a lot of liquor involved with that period of my life too. Coincidence? :lmao:

Maria - I hope you are enjoying Torchwood, too!

JenB - Washcloths in shoes...never thought of that one to absorb moisture. I'll have to try it sometime, at least I will if we ever get rain here again. I have always used newspaper but we don't always have one around.

Debra - I think you are right about at least one thing, bourbon would help in that case. Good luck with volunteering at the sprint tri. Just be careful or you'll be doing them yourself one day soon. I started by volunteering at the local sprint tri last year, now I am training for my third tri this year.

Jeanne - I'm not sure Ohana means "that" kind of family.

Everyone take care this weekend and enjoy themselves!
