Cast: me (30), DH (30), DD (4)- Lion King, Pooh and Buzz fanatic

Woke up early (6:30?) and got everyone ready for the first day in the parks. Stopped for a quick breakfast at the Food N Fun Center. I was being frugal and brought pop tarts from our stash from home. Bought OJ there and cereal for DD and DH. Then, off to the monorail and Epcot.

We went right onto a monorail train inside CR (so cool to be able to do that from your hotel) and were relieved to see we did not have to fold up DD’s stroller to go on, as we had the rain ponchos, snacks, etc. stuffed in the basket underneath. We arrived at Epcot at about 9:20 am. The park was pretty empty, now and throughout the day. We knew this was the off-season, but the place seemed deserted. We walked onto/into everything throughout the day (and still didn’t do everything, but oh well….). We did do all of the things we really wanted to do, enjoyed it all, and almost finished the park to boot, so I won’t complain.

In approximate order, we did:
*Spaceship Earth (DD enjoyed; thought it was cool to be going inside the “big golf ball”)
*Test Track (yes, walked on to this!) which DD loved (did I mention she's a 4-year-old daredevil?)- lots of fun; bought a pressed penny book in the gift shop (along with a couple of pennies and postcard for me, which I collect)
*Wonders of Life pavilion: we saw both shows- Making of Me and Cranium Command- and enjoyed them both, except for DD who did not like CC at all. We were sitting right up front and all the loud noise and sound effects got to her (she is sensitive to such things, particularly when unexpected). I think if it wasn’t her first loud show, she would have enjoyed it, but it was just a little overwhelming. We did a few of the exhibits (the skeleton Xrays, for one) and DH and DD did Body Wars. I sat this out as my long-standing issue with motion sickness has been getting worse. They both enjoyed it.
*Then it was on to Universe of Energy- a neat show. DD and I enjoyed the dinosaurs and DH and I chuckled quite a bit at Ellen- she is very funny.

*Next it was on to the Land where we got lunch at the Sunshine Season Food Fair. We were pleasantly surprised with our lunch here. There was a good variety to choose from and we were lucky there weren’t long lines. The atmosphere with the umbrellas at the tables, etc was neat, too. I remember eating here on my trip with my family in 1988. DD had a PBJ kids meal (complete with chips she didn’t eat, a big chocolate chip cookie and Sprite). DH had a barbeque sandwich and I had the chicken tender basket from the BBQ place. We both liked our food; the chicken strips were quite good. After this, we checked on the boat ride, but it was temporarily closed down (never found out why). The Circle of Life movie was about to start, so we ran up to that. This was very well done and DD loved seeing the Lion King characters. We did Food Rocks next. This was one of my favorites in 1988 (when it was still Kitchen Kaberet and a different show) and I was excited to see it. DD had developed a bad mood for some reason (delay of the boat ride?) and pouted through most of the show. Too bad since I think if she had tried, she would have really liked the show. We then checked Living With the Land and it was finally back open, so we went on. We all enjoyed this, another thing I remembered from ’88. We particularly liked the different (unusual and huge) gourds and the other foods being grown ‘vertically’—should have taken pictures.

*Next was Imagination: DD loved the Figment ride-very cute; we shopped in the Figment themed gift shop for a while next, where we bought our Disney 2003 photo album and had it sent to resort. DD got a little upset—she wanted an over-priced Figment baseball and a bunch of other things. She was to be spending her own money before we began springing for stuff for her and we didn’t want her to blow all her money on her first day. In the end, she was annoyed at our input, indecicive, and didn’t buy anything. I really wish I would have encouraged her to buy the baseball now, as she ended up with a collection of sports balls from the rest of the trip. :( After this, we went through the What If labs and exhibits. These were lots of fun. We made music with our arms, had our digital picture taken at IBM exhibit (where they have you take a picture of it with your camera- ours came out surprisingly well), stepped on pictures in the ground to make sounds, etc. Then we did the Honey I Shrunk the Audience show, which was a hoot. DH and I really enjoyed, as did DD for the most part. She was somewhat bothered by the mice and the loud noise.

*After this, we were ready for a little break, so we let DD play in the shooting fountains outside Imagination. (She was wearing her swim suit under her clothes in preparation for this). She had a blast doing this and was so cute. She must have played there a good 40 minutes. I got some great pictures. I took her to the restroom and dried her off, then changed her into undies and put her clothes back on. We had to improvise and use the plastic bag the stroller rain cover came in to put her wet suit in. Great idea, DH!

*Now we were ready to hit the World Showcase (after deciding to forgo Mission: Space- DD was too short and I couldn’t ride anyway- and Innoventions- which we figured we’d hit later in the week, but never did :( ) . First stop was Mexico, where we enjoyed the boat ride and browsed in the marketplace. Then it was on to an early-ish supper (5:30?) at the Cantina de San Angel counter service stand. DD and I both had the kids plate, which was a beef burrito and tortilla chips- nothing fancy but yummy. I got OJ and DD had both Sprite and milk (silly girl). DH had the combo platter and I sampled off his plate. We enjoyed the atmosphere here, sitting by the water. After this, I decided I had to go back into Mexico and buy a leather purse I saw there, so I did this and had it sent to the resort.

*On to Norway, where we rode Maelstrom. DD was somewhat scared, but called it a “cool ride”. We saw the Norway film. We then went to China, where DD announced she had to urgently make use of the potty. Oh, the joys of parenthood at WDW! :D This caused us to miss the next showing of the China movie and we decided not to wait for the next one, to save time. We had enjoyed the atmosphere in China and thought we might come back another day for the movie (ha!). We moved over to the US and got ice cream from a stand while waiting for the next American Adventure show. Show was good, DD a little bored. It was getting late and DD pretty tired, so we skimmed through the rest of the countries, stopping only to savor the atmosphere-- and in Japan to see the baseball in Japan exhibit. As a life-long baseball lover, I liked this a lot- neat idea.

Highlights of the day: DD playing in the fountains, how DD liked the "big ball" so much, Figment ride, Test Track

LOL Valentine! You know, I've thought of doing that. :D She hasn't mentioned the ball much since the trip, but if she talks about it again, I may just have to do that.
