Well it's good to see some cities still do stuff like that.:thumbsup2 None of the holidays, except Thanksgiving & Valentine's are really celebrated in the elementary/middle schools down here.:sad2: As for the birthdays I think the only thing they allow are store bought cookies or something like that. A teacher I was registering was telling me about all these changes for parties and stuff after Sept. 11th happened and now they're really restricted in what they can do as far as celebrations. :sad2:

It is :sad2: that so much had to change after 9/11.

It disappeared once Kindergarten started.

Z-lee--at this school district, we have a Christmas party (yes, called Christmas) and a Valentines Party. You can bring healthy snacks in for the child's birthday. BA also goes to Bible class once a week which was not available at her TX school (it is optional, but everyone in her class goes.
At the high school, no one has said anything about parties so I'm assuming none. But they do have fun sock-hops after the games.......at least I think they are fun as I haven't been invited.

I think it will disappear in Kindergarten here too. ALthough it might next year in Pre-K. I don't know. He will be going to Catholic School so we shall see.

Jimmy's daycare has a celebration for pretty much anything they can think of. It's kind of fun actually. They will have the Halloween parade and party in October. Thanksgiving dinner in November, the Christmas Show and party in December (and yes they call it a Christmas Show), Valentines in February, St. Patrick's Day, Easter, etc. They even do a Mothers Day Tea and a Father's Day BBQ. It's really cute and the kids love when the parents are there so they can show off. Last week they had a grandparents day ice cream social and all of the grandparents went and ate ice cream and the kids made them a craft, etc. It was really cute.

What amazes me the most is the parents who refuse to do anything extra. Do you run into this problem. Example, last year (and all the previous years) they askes everyone to sign up to bring something for the Thanksgiving dinner. The director had 4 people sign up. I wound up taking 2 extra days off from work so the I could cook a turkey and all the trimmings (There are 60 kids). Do you mean to tell me that you couldn't sign up to bring a can of corn or a ar of gravy:confused3 I know we all work, that is why our kids are in daycare. A little effort PLEASE. It makes me:headache:

A Croc scandal?? :confused3
I haven't heard anything--but I'm not a registered Croc wearer either!

TE I'm shocked!!! Our fearless leader does not wear the comfy footwear?

Hmmm TX and Philly huh? Good to know, I'll keep that filed away in my brain for when I'm ready to have kids. :rotfl2:

Seriously though, I already know I won't be raising my kidlets in Miami. Nope, not gonna happen. :sad2: The schools here are ridiculous. Can you believe that when I moved here from Colorado I went to a Middle School that didn't allow shorts. Now imagine my  when I heard that and to me 65 degrees was shorts weather. Shorts not allowed, but skirts allowed :confused3 Make sense out of that....

Oh, I saw that on the news today, Z. Personally I think it's a crock. :lmao: No, but seriously, if the kid had on a flip flop, the same thing would have happened. Why are they saying CROCS are dangerous and not escalators?? Some people!

:rotfl2: I think so too T! I remember a few years ago they were advising not putting kids in shoes with shoelaces, to use the velcro ones instead 'cause the laces get caught. I still don't see how the Crocs (especiall the beach ones) can get caught in the escalators...:confused3 Why use escalators, when there are elevators. :teeth:

I am a probation/parole Supervisor for the city/county.
Is that mainly with young kids? Don't think we have that role here, probably called something different! Do you enjoy it?

A Croc scandal?? :confused3
I haven't heard anything--but I'm not a registered Croc wearer either!
There was a big thing here a few weeks ago saying they were going to ban the wearing of crocs in hospital as they wouldn't protect your foot from falling syringes etc also can't be cleaned properly :confused3

But they do have fun sock-hops after the games.......at least I think they are fun as I haven't been invited.
So everyone wears socks and hops  :rotfl2: And how come you haven't been invited do they not know how good you are at hopping :rotfl2: Oh and that you're lovely too

We have that here too, for our fetes we ask for Tombola prizes, can's, bottles, chocolates etc well some family are so generrous and others well they send in a value tin of baked beans that costs about 20 cents now who would want to win that :scared:

I found out the results of yesterdays golf comp and out of 17 entrants I came second :yay: :yay: :yay: I win $10 not much but yeah I've finally won something :woohoo:

CROCS I was all set to rant when I saw the headline on CNN.com yesterday, but decided it wasn't worth the effort!
The utter lack of personal responsibility for one's and one's chidlrens' safety in this country never ceases to amaze and disgust me. :sad2: For goodness' sake, keep your kids' toes away from the edges of the escalator, regardless of their footwear!

Hmmm... I guess I did need to rant. A little. ;)

HALLOWEEN This has always been a tough holiday for me. I grew up in Buffalo, NY, where it frequnetly snows jsut before Halloween. I always wanted to be somehting pretty - a princess, Miss Universe, etc. - which is pretty darned impossible one one needs a parka to go outside.

Now I'm in FL, where it's like 85 on halloween. Ever notice that most kids' costumes are either fuzzy or polyester?! :scared: Nothing like a little heat stroke between candy stops!

it does seem SOOOO much more commercialized these days. When I was little, most decorations were home-made and there wasn't much of a market, beyond candy. Now, my DS wants me to get a "haunted house" from Dept. 56

They need me in charge! I just asked for a list of parents and phone numbers and went down the list--I would give each one a choice of 2 or 3 items and then sign them up--really, I "think" the parents appreciated having a plan early on and in any event, it's REALLY hard to say "no" to me! ;)

Sock hops--it's a 1950's retro thing--after the big football game, the teens go to the gym, take their shoes off, and dance for a couple hours. If they don't have a sock hop, one of the local churches will throw a party for them. It's a safe after-game thing.....but parents aren't invited.:sad2:

Golf--hey! save that $10 to play the really hard course at WDW next year!:rotfl2:

Halloween--TX was always super hot even on 10/31 so we tried thinner costumes. My neighbor always made each of her 4 children a costume (a nice one)--I was always amazed!

We finally got BAs costume ordered--here is what she picked-

Wow I missed a lot this afternoon.
I had to sit and hold my ds so he could snooze.
He said Mommy I love you and gave me a big kiss so I said come here I will hold you so you can unwind.
I am also in the middle of a big decision about meals for next year. I posted on the restaurant board but I bet you ladies ( insert butt kissing smiley here) would do a much better job of picking for me. I need one more TS choice for the trip. Yes the trip next Sept. :rotfl: We have Boma, CRT, CP, WCC, Teppan Edo, GG, and Kona. All are for lunch or dinner except Kona is for breakfast.

Loved Le Cellier, but what about Yak & Yeti?

DM! You have to do Mr Diz!

Becasue I am crazy and already trying to decide stuff for AUGUST I need everyone's opinions on these places:

Crystal Palace (Lunch or Dinner)
Liberty Tree Tavern (Dinner)
Garden Grill (Lunch or Dinner)
Chef Mickey's (Dinner on a non park day)

Kona Cafe (Breakfast or Dinner)
Mama Melrose's (Fantasmic Dinner Package)
Raglan Road (Looked good DM's TR)

Thanks for your help:thumbsup2

Crystal Palace (Lunch or Dinner) Love CP! But try breakfast - It's our favorite character breakfast.
Liberty Tree Tavern (Dinner) - Tried it twice and hated it both times
Garden Grill (Lunch or Dinner) - hear this is great
Chef Mickey's (Dinner on a non park day) - very good

Kona Cafe (Breakfast or Dinner) I hear this is good
Mama Melrose's (Fantasmic Dinner Package) - Mama Melrose is hit or miss. We've been and it was good and been and it was bad. May be worth it with the Fantasmic pkg

I work with adults (over 18) Right now I am with a specialized unit called the Strategic Anti-Violence Unit. We supervised those offender most likely to kill or be killed,:scared1:

I think this is what the director will have to do. What really annoyed me is that these were the same people who lined up to eat on that day (parents are invited too!)

Hi and good luck with work.

Loved Le Cellier, but what about Yak & Yeti?

I may try Yak and Yeti but that would also mean I would have to enter AK and that is something I am trying to avoid.

Right near Christmas time the elementary school has a "holiday extravaganza" where they have people with knowledge of other cultures in how they celebrate either Christmas, Hannukah, Kwaanza, etc. Even people from other parts of the world if they celebrate Christmas differently than we do. I think it is wonderful for the kids to learn about all cultures.

I didn't know you grew up in Buffalo! Rob & I lived there for a whole 6 months back in 1998...ha! Actually we were in Niagara Falls. We rented a home on the Niagara River and could see the mist from the Falls from our yard. I like to call that time our "summer rental" as Rob got transferred back to Syracuse so fast.

I agree about the weather being cold for Halloween. Last year was a beautiful night though and the kids were actually hot in their costumes.

So you were there over teh summer(ish) months, I gather? Very, VERY smart move! :rotfl: I grew up in Town of Tonawanda, not too far from the falls.

Hey guys!

BA is home sick today again--may have to run her to the doctors to see what is wrong. She is watching Hannah Montana now which seems to make her feel better!

Still trying to talk the family into a Feb trip.
DH and AE are not as excited as in "didn't we just go there?":headache: (what DOES that mean??)
BA is excited of course--and I have no problems with just us going. :snooty:
AE wants to go overseas but I reminded her that we do not have enough miles yet.
I did tell her we may stay on site and showed her different videos of the places--she like CBR and POR and of course the Poly which ain't gonna happen now without some major Pixie codes...
Then she reminded me that she is cheerleading during value season. :headache: Reg season starts 3/29 but of course is higher--and now the weekends are $10 higher then too. And no one wants to go during Easter break again.
And I found out cheerleading groups are staying at the all stars and CBR during 2/2-2/10. Anyone had any problems with them??
Whew! This is stressful--but I still love planning !:cloud9:

Oh--my new friend at the BA's school wanted me to post and ask folks if they had stayed at either of these 2 resorts (she is swapping her RCI points)
_Sheraton Vistana
_Orange Lake resort

I work with adults (over 18) Right now I am with a specialized unit called the Strategic Anti-Violence Unit. We supervised those offender most likely to kill or be killed,:scared1:
Wow, that's scary!

:cool1: Money to put away for next years trip:dance3:
I just found out that as there were only 9 entries in my division there's no second prize :sad1: I'll just have to win the next one then won't I :rotfl2:

TE it's funny how watching TV is making BA feel better :rotfl2:

My parents stayed at the Vistana before and we visited them for a day there. They were located in a nonrenovated section but it was fine. I think you get good value for your money there. The whole resort, itself, is nice. I may know someone who has stayed at the other. I'll find out.

But I'm a Disney snob. If I'm going on a real vacation there, I have to stay on property.

Sorry BA is sick! You and BA could do the trip alone.

Yes! she's watching Confessions of a teenage drama queen now.

Yes--I want to try and stay on property this time too--I like the "total immersion" idea and BA said "it's not Disney unless you go under Mickey's gates"
But she has only 1 more year to pay off her time share. She wants me to help her plan the trip for next Oct. She has a 10 year old and a 2 year old so I will get some advice from you for the little one! (she'll be 3 then and is really shy around strangers)
