On the third day we had another lovely breakfast in the hotel. The flight attendant and her DH decided to turn in their car and shop in Nice's old town. She's responsible for the food, wine, and flowers on the plane, for starters, so she had to get some stuff for the next day for the flight to Paris.
D & I had decided to follow the book and go see a few sites in the countryside and further along the coast toward Italy. We asked if J & J2 wanted to join us. J had said he'd wanted to just relax, but his DW knew he'd get bored in 15 minutes and she really wanted to keep going. So, they decided to join us. Fun!
The guide book had just mentioned a medieval "perched" village. Didn't sound like there was much there, but it was a destination and looked like a nice drive, at least.
We followed a narrow, winding road up a nearby mountain, and started to see this:
Yep, that's where we were headed, Peillon.
There were NOT many sites, but it remains my favorite day in Nice because it was just so cool. It was only something like 12 miles from Nice, but it felt like 200, as well as something like 500 years away.
Here's the view from the tiny little parking area outside the walls:
We just wandered through the rabbit warren of stone steps and inter-connected houses. We whispered, because it just felt weird to talk loudly. It was beautiful. Here's a random nice doorway:
And a taste of the steps and walkways:
D & I at the "top" of the town near the church tower:
And this - I was NOT standing on anything. This is an actual, real-life front door for someone:
There were national park like walking trails out beyond the town, and we walked a tiny bit of them to see the views:
Then we had lunch at the only hotel - built outside the walls.
It was pretty funny - the hotel had menus displayed at the bottom of the stairs leading up to the lobby. There were price fixe lunches for 60 Euros (!!!) or there were sandwiches for 8. We wanted the sandwiches, go figure.
So we went up and were seated at a lovely cloth and china set table. The menus, however, were only the pricey ones. I asked in my stumbling French about the sandwiches. Oh, yes, they had them, but you had to go sit on the other side of the porch, in the more "lounge" area. Which was fine - we certainly weren't upset - but then the SAME waiter waited on us there. This, I don't get, but whatever. It obviously was the same kitchen, waitstaff, etc.
D & I had pate sandwiches and J & J2 had ham & cheese - but the ham was proscuitto and the cheese was brie.

They were on monstrously large and good baguettes, with lettuce and tomato and such and they were fantastic.
I took this picture from the terrace:
We decided that it was still early, so we took a winding "high road" back down toward Monaco. We stopped briefly at the last bit of French Riviera, but then decided, what the heck, let's go to Italy. So we drove into Italy and just stopped at the first town for vino & formaggio!
D in Italy:
Now, the Italians seemed to be closed from 4-7, and it was about 5:00. We found one place open and willing to give us wine, and I asked about their cheese and they said OK.
I took a couple of semesters of Italian when I was working at the University of Illinois, after I'd already graduated, and had been pretty good for a while - but that was 10 years ago.
The waiter wanted to speak either Italian or French. Hmmm.
At any rate, with some sign language and my basic Italian, I thought I'd ordered a cheese plate for four people, with assorted cheeses.
However, we got FOUR PLATES of assorted cheeses. Big ones.

But we ate nearly all of it, so I guess it turned out fine.
We drove back the "middle road" through Monaco and to Nice. We had yet another lovely dinner - just D & I, J was done for the day - at a place where supposedly Elton John is a regular. We were sitting on the sidewalk bit, when the interior of the restaurant starting blaring an Elton John song and we saw a lot of flashes going off. We don't know for sure, as we ourselves didn't see him, but it made us wonder.
At any rate, it was a great day - no group tension - and we saw some really cool things.
The next morning the flight crew had to leave around 9:15 for the airport, so we had a quick breakfast and did that. J2, R, & I caught a cab for our flight more around 11:30 - J2 & I walked the beach promenade for a bit. And then we were off for Paris...
Stay tuned!
