Team Five Intros/Bios/Finding a name!

I read parts of our thread to dh/Tim - to get his input and ask for some more brainstorming ideas... here is a snippet of our discussion:

I wonder if we can do something with Phideoudise (sp?) the first person to running the marathon - he ran the Distance -

or

Dumbledore's Army

"Tim, that's not Disney" Tim, "It runs on the Disney channel all the time, I know its not Disney, ..."

ok...( more reading)

"well, if they can do Walt's Warriors, we can Do Dumbledore's Army"

"um, ok, I"ll put it to the team..."

:rotfl2: Sandy, tell your DH that I vote for Dumbledore's Army IF he assures me I can apparate to the finish line when I'm tired. ;)

Hi all!! :wave2: Sorry I'm so slow on the up-take--I WILL do better posting my time. My name is Beth and this past marathon at Disney was my very first race. I can't believe I finished--I had a great time.
I have been walking pretty much daily for about 10 years just to lose and controll my weight after quitting smoking about 15 years ago. I talked my sister into signing up for the marathon after telling everyone that I was going to walk the Disney Marathon....before I turn 50...one thing off my "bucket list", but now I think I am hooked. We are already checking out other races:scared: and hopefully the half in 09.

Can't wait for the game to begin--I need this motivation to get back on track!!

:welcome: Beth!!

How's the weather in Michigan? I'm in IL near Chicago, grew up in IN, dh grew up in Michigan - (nearer Detroit) then IN anyway -

BRRRRRRRR it really really turned so cold - from a high of 47 F to -2 BELOW ZERO all in ONE DAY!! not to mention the blowing snow and these winds!!

I love your spirit Beth!! If you're looking for a race in August the Chicago Disntance Classic was popular last year because its a John Bingham event!

(one of his many quotes The miracle isn't that I finished. The miracle is that I had the courage to start.” which is so me!!

and to quote his site...
In the running lexicon, the word "Penguin" has come to mean a person who runs more for the joy of running than for recognition and public rewards. Some of us are perpetual Penguins. We are consumed by the pleasure of movement.

Other Penguins find their joy in the challenge of reaching their own potential, whatever that is. For some it has meant running the Boston Marathon, the only U.S. marathon that has qualifying standards. For others, it has meant finding an independence and freedom in their daily runs that expands their limits.

Can there be such a thing, then, as a Penguin athlete? Or an athletic Penguin? Can people who are fighting to lose thirty or forty pounds be athletes? Of course they can! Can people who have waited until their forties to become physically active be athletes? You bet. Can people who finish last in a race be athletes? Yes, they can. And yes, they are.

You might be a penguin if...
-you have to politely (for the third time) tell the men in the police car moving behind you that No you do not wish a ride.

you wear your jog bra on top of your singlet. This is especially true if you are male.

during a race, you keep turning around to see if there is still anybody behind you.

the rest of the pack is out of sight before you've run 100 yards.

you meet both the hare AND the tortoise running back towards you doing their cool-down after a race.

the only reason you don't drop out of a race is that you're embarrassed that the police in the car behind you (closing the course) will see you.

as you're rounding the corner onto Main Street and the finish line, you overhear the announcer on a microphone to the crowd of 500 saying "we are ASSURED the young lady IS coming in!" (Oh well, at least I was young).

you recognize all the regular runners on your favorite route from behind.

you get passed on the uphill by a runner pushing a double baby jog stroller.

you shoot a 24-shot roll of film during a marathon.

you make arrangements for a late checkout at the hotel.

you are more worried about the porta-potty lines than the start line.

your support crew talks about meeting you for supper, not lunch.

you have to memorize the route because you know that you will lose the back of the pack.

the truck picking up the cones is pressing on your behind. (Don't laugh—this actually happened to me!)

as you pass a course volunteer they ask you, "How many are behind you yet?" and you say "Behind me? Behind? Gosh ... I think two ... Unless they turned around!"

the awards ceremony is over before you cross the finish line

Thanks Sandy:flower3:

It just started getting colder and windy here--hopefully this won't last long.

We may have to think about the race in August. I grew up near Detroit and my sister still lives there, so we are hoping to do the Detroit 1/2 in September. It sounds like fun--you go through the tunnel to Canada and then back over the bridge--we'll see.

I love the qoute too!!

It looks like we are the only team without a name....have we finalized on Hercules' Heroes or is it still up for debate?

I like Hercules' Heroes. Also, how fast does the Detroit half usually fill up. I go to school in Toledo so that would be a good one to do between now and the main event (Disney). Plus saying I ran to Canada would be cool.

Hi, team!

I was on the sub list and just got placed onto the-yet-to-be-named Team 5!

My name is Renee. I did the Disney full this year after doing the half in 2007. I've been running for about 3 years now and don't have any plans to stop! DH and I are now in negotiations for next January - I'd really like to do the full again. (Even though at miles 14-16 I swore I'd never do another full again!) I plan on running about 20-26 miles a week this spring and finding a couple of half's to do.

I live in NC with my DH, DD(14) and DS(10). DD is in high school this year and is into singing, soccer and a bit of running on the side. DS is big time into soccer. DH coaches soccer and has become a runner thanks to the Disney events.

I am kind of a SAHM, but I also work part time as my church's assistant preschool director (in the mornings) and part time at our performing arts center in Raleigh (in the evenings). In my "former life" I was a software engineer. Life is crazy busy, but lots of fun!

I'm glad to be on a team, as one of my resolutions this year was to track my miles, which I've never really done.

I will stay out of the name debate; I have to say Hercules (as a character/movie) was never a big favorite of mine, but the "Going the Distance" connection is cool.

Go team!
Renee

I have THNDRMATT, MARSUZCOS and COHOE that are listed on our team that have not posted to this thread - so I'll make sure and send a PM so we can be a go on the team name,

we also need a team slogan, slip into other team threads to see their slogans to get an idea!! (IF needs be!)

This is great! You guys are on the move! I was scolded by Lara that I MUST get on the computer and submit my bio, but I have had some horrible horrible flu like illness going on and spent a few days sleeping it off. I hope that nobody gets as ill as I was with this virus!!!

Enough of whining. My name is Marie. I live in Western Pennsylvania. I am so very happy to be on this team! The Hercules name sounds good and competitive. Pluto was also a fun name. My vote goes in that order.

I am in my late 40's, met up with the Wish group doing my first official half marathon in Disney a few weeks ago. I am a Medical Assistant and happen to work in the same office as Lara. We trained together for the Disney half, and will continue to inspire each other for this team. My best friend is Simon, and he was inspired at the Disney half, and may start running/walking this year.
I am up and about, no more dizzies, so I will make it online daily again. Thanks for all your work guys!! I mean it! :cheer2:

Hello Team Five. :wave2:

This is Debra, from Team Ohana! Just popping in to warn you: Don't think that if you remain nameless that your team will be able to successfully go underground & avoid the trash talking! A sneaky strategy, to be sure, but I'm watching you. :cool2:

Have a great time choosing your name--and FWIW, I think the "Going the Distance" phrase really makes the Hercules' Heroes name stand out!

Well, I didn't really SCOLD Marie
Anyway, so fun to meet everyone online and look forward to going the distance with everyone!
GO TEAM 5!!:cheer2:

:cheer2: TEAM 5 IS ALIVE!!

WOOHOOO!!!
:cheer2:

I'll let Capn Duckie add our name to our thread and let fearless Mighty Panda know we'll be Hercules (Herc's for short) Heroes!! (and I think Mighty Panda did a great job mixing the team - young'uns, older-than-young'uns, runners, beginners, etc!! THANKS oh Mighty PANDA!)

Rack up the miles starting Friday!! There is some discussion on biking really racking up the miles and may not be "fair" or equal or something - so watch for changes (or start riding bikes!!)

DEBRA ahaha - so it was you lurking around the corner - and I thought it was just those persistant pesky perky Team 2's sneaking in...

:rotfl2:

(I was never good at trash talking!! :rotfl2: )

Thanks for the welcome! Here are the lyrics to "Go the Distance":

I have often dreamed
Of a far off place
Where a hero's welcome
Would be waiting for me
Where the crowds will cheer
When they see my face
And a voice keeps saying
This is where I'm meant to be

I'll be there someday
I can go the distance
I will find my way
If I can be strong
I know ev'ry mile
Will be worth my while
When I go the distance
I'll be right where I belong

Down an unknown road
To embrace my fate
Though the road may wander
It will lead me to you
And a thousand years
Would be worth the wait
It may take a lifetime
But somehow I'll see it through

And I won't look back
I can go the distance
And I'll stay on track
No I won't accept defeat
It's an uphill slope
But I won't lose hope
Till I go the distance
And my journey is complete

But to look beyond the glory is the hardest part
For a hero's strength is measured by his heart

Like a shooting star
I can go the distance
I will search the world
I will face its harms
I don't care how far
I can go the distance
TillI find my hero's welcome
Waiting in your arms...

I will search the world
I will face its harms
TillI find my hero's welcome
Waiting in your arms...

I really like the verses I bolded - very appropriate!
Renee

Hey - does this make us the only team with not only a team slogan but a team song?!?

:thumbsup2 Renee WOOHOO!! :woohoo:

I'm going to have to go thru my Disney CD's to see if that's on any of them, or purchase it for the ipod!!

I emailed what I think is the final draft of our pic to Sandy to post so it should be up soon. Hopefully ill have my posts soon so I can add pictures.
