Team 6 - Team Ohana - Check in and introduce!

Headaches after LRs? My first guess is dehydration--that's what causes headaches and fatigue for me. I always think I'm getting enough water during the run, but tend not to be great about drinking water and/or electrolytes before and after. What are you drinking before, during, and afterwards? And are you eating any sports beans or gels during your LRs?

Great insight, Debra. I don't usually drink anything before I run because I tend to go running as soon as I get up. (Yes, I have been known to sleep in my running clothes to make it easier on myself in the morning.) Anyway, maybe that's part of my problem. Also, like you, I may not be drinking enough after I run. I'll have to experiment this weekend. I haven't tried any sports beans or gels yet because I haven't really run long enough to need them. I know that's all about to change as training is starting to feel very real (and I'm starting to feel very scared :scared1: ). Thanks for the input!

Now, do you really believe Jeanne and Nancy were that well behaved? ;) I think we're hearing inklings of cabana-boyish encounters!

OK, OK, I'll throw you a bone......

hubba hubba

Things here are good. DD loves kindergarten and is doing well. My DH and I are debating doing the ING Philia Half Marathon on the 21st-- I just need to switch around my work schedule for the day which is proving to be a bit tricky. I am finally fully recovered from the DL 1/2 and ready to race again (but I want my cabana boys too....)

JenB--- There are alot of Wishers doing the Philly race. If I had been doing some sort of training this summer it would have been one I would have done as it is close to me. Congratulations of doing the DL half.

Debra--- Congratulations on your new job. So which university is this job with as there are so many in your area? So did you like Twlight? I think Beth (creativebeth) has all the books in the series that she could lend you instead of waiting forever to get them. I finished Breaking Dawn on the cruise. I actually didn't read it one day because I was near the end and was afraid I wouldn't like the ending. A lot of people have fussed about the 4th book, but I really liked the entire series. I left the book on the ship for someone else to enjoy. I will look at our gym library and see if any of the Stephanie Plum books are there and pick them up for you to have for the future. I'm reading Dead to the World by Charlaine Harris. It is from Southern Vampire Series and am enjoying it alot different than Twlight.

Julie--- Glad that your training is going well. I have started to use the G2 gatorade with my training which I like much better than regular gatorade.

Jeanne-- We are trying to show our good girl side and you go and show that picture, now they will never believe we were well behaved. :rotfl2:

I don't start official training for a couple of weeks for the disney half, but am back to all my cross training which I love. Plus my body has less aches and pains then when I am doing all that walking. So my goal for the half is to just finish it and have a good time, I really think I might just stay with my cross training program and just work in a long walk on the weekend. When I was finished training last year for the marathon, my body had been abused by all that training and I was physically miserable. I feel that physically I am in better condition than last year from all the cross training and the wide variety of things I have done since May. I need to add more strength training but other than that I like my current program. I have done the elipical much more than walking and TM, but when I did my 5.5 mile walk on Sunday I felt great at the end so is there really much difference between the elipical and walking that it will matter for a half?

I now have 2 golf lessons completed. There is way to much stuff to remember for my senior mind. Jeanne and I and our husbands are going to be golfing together on our Oct trip which I'm sure will be very entertaining.

A big shout out to my other Ohana cousins.

Nancy

Hi Team!

I've been busy and away from here for a while.

I ave been keeping with my plan not to overdo the running as I get back into things after my accident recovery. Last week I did 10 miles doing a 4:1 run:walk pattern, so I am feeling just about back into the swing of things.

I'm bummed that I have to put off my run tomorrow morning. I really should keep perspective about being square in the path of Hurrican Ike, there being so many better things to be concerned about. (For the record, I am 80 miles inland and should be fine other than I will likely be out of electricity for several days or longer.) I really feel like I could cut off several minutes a mile with the right wind speed pushing me along.)

Y'all take care and I'll post back after the storm.

Richard,

I'm glad to hear that you're getting back into the swing of things.

I hope Ike isn't too bad. Stay safe!

I finally found some coverage for a few hours on Sunday the 21st, so it looks like DH and I will be running the Philia Distance Run :cool1: of couse this means I have to be ready to run again in a week-- wish me luck.

Jeanne: Sweet Monkey Sundae! That's some eye candy! And you know I'm talking about you ladies, too! ;) Why is "Tall and Tan and Young and Handsome" running through my head? :rolleyes1 I second Julie's call for stories, preferably involving rum, hot towels, and steamy sights.

JenB: Yay for signing up for the ING Phila Half! How far is it from your neck of the woods there? (I'm in Pgh, and wonder if the drive from NJ is shorter, because I contemplated doing the ING this year, but decided the drive and my schedule wasn't a good mix.) I hope you will give us a complete RR, as I'd be interested in knowing if it's worth the drive. (Not that your race is all about me, I'm genuinely interested in your experiences.) Oh, and congrats on doing the DL 1/2. :cheer2:

Nancy: You know, when I was reading Twilight, I kept thinking it would make a very visually interesting movie. I guess I have film on the brain. I'm actually okay with waiting on the series because my reading time has been cut down quite a bit--so I'll just run through my library holds. Right now, I'm reading Evanovich #4, the title escapes me. Isn't Charlaine Harris the author behind the True Blood series that's been adapted by HBO?

In terms of your XT, I've been thinking about your experiences a lot recently. I've dumped a lot of XT recently--scheduling rather than intentionally--and have noticed many more aches and pains than I normally have. I really think that XT makes us better walkers and runners and just stronger overall. I've been playing with rearranging my training program to get back to more XT, even if it means less running and walking. Then I read your post, and I thought, "Nancy's right! That's just the way I feel, too." So thank you, thank you, for being my outer voice of reason. You said just what I needed to hear. :thumbsup2 :cheer2: This grasshopper has much to learn.

Richard: I most certainly hope Ike didn't hit you--or anyone you know who lives closer to the harder hit areas. Do let us know that you're doing okay. In better news, congratulations on your running recovery--it sounds like you're doing well, and you certainly deserve the break. I assume you're feeling pretty good about the runs, not in pain, and strong form, and all? I can already tell you're leaving me in the dust with the training! (I have yet to say after a 10 miler that I feel I'm just about back in the swing of things.)

As for me: 10 miler today, but not feeling about it the way Richard felt about his. Like I mentioned above to Nancy, I really need to recommit to XT and working out much more consistently. Otherwise, my sedentary life catches up to my tortoise pace and overtakes it. Not cool. I'll be switching up my training plan with a focus on more XT in mind, and will keep you all informed.

But speaking of cool, today was the first movie I've seen (outside teaching) in 3 weeks. Burn After Reading. It's fluffy stuff, and was a great treat on a rainy afternoon post-LR, which describes today. And then I made Nestle Toll-House chocolate-chip cookies. Tell me, is there anything better than that recipe--how can one improve upon perfection? :goodvibes

No, seriously. Has anyone found a way to improve upon the Toll-House recipe. Because cookies makes my mouth water, and if you have got a better recipe than that I might very well kiss your running shoes.

Oh, and to all my Ohana Cousins. You didn't get rid of me so easily. I'm back, and wanting to hear from all of you! :dance3:

Richard...hope you're ok.

JenB...good luck on your race! I found out I'll be on office call for my duathlon but we don't get a lot of calls from the office on Sundays so I'm just gonna cross my fingers.

Debra...we must have been channeling the same cravings on Friday. Here's what I made:

Nestle Tollhouse Chocolate Chip Pan Cookie

I'm not sure how I feel about the Twilight movie. I don't think the guy that's playing Edward is...ethereal or maybe drop dead gorgeous enough. He's the actor that played Cedric Diggory in the Harry Potter movie. Not sure who to suggest instead...I'm still more interested in casting Morelli and Ranger ;)

Mel--- I agree about the casting of Edward in the movie. I pictured him having a little more muscle build up. I am anxious for the picture to come out in Dec. Now that I finished all the books I will be looking forward to all the movies. I agree about casting for Morelli and Ranger. I am really surpised that no one has made a movie from those books. I'm giving the role of Ranger to "The Rock". I haven't decided on Morelli yet. Sandra Bullack for Stephanie. Cloris Leachman for Grandma. Any suggestions from anyone who who should be cast for the movie. Maybe we should open up a file company and hires Jeanne's son to film it for us.

Debra---I don't know if I am the best person in the world to be taking fitness advice from. I do believe that XT does work better for me and giving me less aches and pains. I hope that increasing your XT will help you also. I just wish that my body looked like someone who did all these workouts. I've seen some of the Twlight film clips and it looks very interesting. I wonder what rating they will get since the book was orginally geared for more teens than adults. Even though you haven't read the last book there is no way that it would be PG-13 if they stayed to the book.
I wish I had HBO to watch the True Blood series, but I am protesting Comcast so I just have expanded cable anymore.

JenB--Glad you could find coverage so that you can do the race. Good luck.

Richard-- I hope you are safe as I saw that Houston has alot of damage.

I am still fighting the Disney Magic respiratory crud. So since my throat was killing me and my lungs were burning, I didn't exercise on Thurs, Fri and Sat other than my golf lesson on Thurs. I still have the sore throat but can breath so today I did 6 miles on the elipical and then went to the Par 3 golf course with DH. It was really more Par 6 and above for me. So did all that walking and hitting and with the heat and humidity I must have sweat off a couple of pounds. Tomorrow is Pilates.

The weekend is nearly over. It just goes to fast.

Nancy, I totally agree about the part of Stephanie. When I first started reading the Plum books, I kept telling my DH that if they ever make these books into a movie, Sandra Bullock should play Stephanie. I guess great minds think alike.

Thanks to all for the kind words of support and well-wishes.

We took nearly the full force of Ike's power as we were in the path of the eye of the storm, although we were off to the western edge of it, so we did not get quite as much rain. We did exceed 11 inches of rain--not counting what fell sideways and missed the rain guage. There is heavy damage from wind as many powers lines have snapped or been toppled by trees. I think this storm took a similar path to Hurricane Alicia in 1983 (or so) but this one did much more damage. We are being told it may be weeks for repairs to phones and electric. Gasoline is hard to come by, but food is generally somewhat available.

I have little patience for many of the complainers as we had been told for the last week to keep our gas tanks full, and to buy food and water, etc... and my family did so and we will be good for several more days as all the services come back up. (Restaurants, grocery stores and gas stations are already starting to open on generator power where there is no electricity.)

I want to tell you people that while some are griping because FEMA's trucks did not materialize out of thin air :wizard: the second the storm passed, they were on site within 24 hours and have been in increasing numbers since that time with the local govts and the Red Cross seeming to me to be doing a great job working to help people. This is such a huge area I didn't think any group could get out so many resorces as quickly as they did. It has to be hard to help the worst off when everyone seems to be bad off. All those groups (public, private, government, ...) are to be congratulated.

I work for a water office (3rd largest in my county) and have managed to keep my customers in water without interuption, for most of them it is the only service they have left and they are appreciative. My office is running off a generator (as are the water plants) and we managed to get phone lines back up for service (somehow DSL is still up, too) here, so I can get this out.

It will be awhile before I can get back to the boards but thanks again for all your support!

Good to hear from you Richard. I'm glad you're okay but sorry to see how devastating the storm was. Hope things get back in working order soon.

My vote for Morelli:

Hey team Ohana. Life has not been kind to me, and neither has time! I did run my 5K a couple weekends back, and have been trying hard to get some training in... it's just not working. With the kids being in school, my mom still in the hospital, and running the busines... I HAVE NO TIME! And it's making me go insane.

So, I had another person tell me that she read the Twilight book and I had to read it. Hmmm... I never have time to read, but when I do I have a huge list of books that everyone tells me to read!!!!

Debra - Sweet Monkey Sundae??? Now that is funny!!!!!

OK, this talk of cookies makes me want to make some. And it reminds me of Friends and Phoebe's secret cookie recipe!!

Mel - LOVE the pan cookies. DH makes those every once in awhile and they are fabulous. Oh and my homemade brownies frosted in homemade frosting is out of this world. Darn it... I will never lose these pounds if I keep talking like this!!!

Oh and Mel - During my 5K I was called by someone in our office. Thankfully I wasn't carrying my cell like I usually do. Dh answered it and said... Uhh, Jen is running right now.

OK, tons to do... sorry for the post and run...

Nancy,

I agree that The Rock is a good choice for Ranger, but I'm going to have to go with Shemar Moore. He plays Morgan on Criminal Minds. I think the writing on that show has gone downhill, but he's yummy so I still watch it!

Greetings Team!
This has been a crazy week for me. Life threw me a little curve ball and although it was nothing serious, it did monopolize a huge chunk of my time.
I've tried to be good about getting back into an exercise routine. I agree about the cross training. I'd be bored to tears if all I did was walk all the time. My favorite is water aerobics because it is so therapeutic for the aches and pains that come with being my age. If i didn't do that 2 or 3 times a week, I'd never survive. I know i probably put in fewer miles than i'm supposed to. John Bingham has pretty much the lowest mileage training plan around and sometimes I fall short of his requirements. I guess it would be different if I was seriously going for a specific time. I just want to finish.....and get the BLING!

Richard: I'm glad you survived the wrath of Ike and don't seem too worse for wear. We lived in Houston from 7/82 thru 6/84 and I remember Alicia vividly. I learned all about taping windows and other storm preparation stuff. We were living in an apt complex and had to tie our Old Smokey (do they still make those?) to our porch. Boy, did they go flying once the storm hit. Anyhow, I'm glad you and the family are OK and hope your local services get back to normal real soon.

Jen: Hugs to you......it sounds like life is still chaotic for you right now. I don't think i ever thanked you for taking care of the posting and recording while I was away. I sure do appreciate the time you took out of your busy schedule to help me out.

Debra: Glad to see you back and posting again. This thread can't survive without your wittiness. Sadly, we WERE pretty much well-behaved during the cruise. I guess after the Victoria and Alberts experience we were afraid of getting a reputation. Hmmmm, come to think of it I can tell you some stories about Nancy hitting on the exercise guy at the spa! :rotfl2:

JenB: good luck with your event this weekend......GO TEAM OHANA!

Julie, Mel, Nancy: I really do have to start reading those books....they sound like so much fun! I just finished "The Nine" which is an expose of what's been going on in the Supreme Court for the last 20 years or so. It had some interesting parts, but much of it was drudgery to get through. That's the problem with belonging to 2 book clubs......I never get the opportunity to choose what I'd like to read. Now I'm about to start "Suite Francaise", which looks a little more interesting.

Everyone else: have a wonderful weekend and keep up the training.....and don't forget to post those minutes and miles! I'm headed over to the other thread now to catch up with the recording.

Richard---Glad that you made it safely through Ike. I hope things soon return to normal in your area.

Julie--- Actually Shemar Moore would also make a good Ranger. He is my favorite on Criminal Mind.

Mel-- I don't know who that actor is that you posted or is it your husband. :confused. However sure he is Morelli enough. Though I have no other suggestions for that character. Anyone else?

Jen--- How is your Mom doing? I didn't realize that she was still in the hospital. Sending some extra PD your waypixiedust: If you want light reading do the Janet Evanovich Stephanie Plum series, it will make you laugh.

JenB--Good luck at Philly this weekend. My friend Beth (creativebeth) is also doing that race.

Jeanne--That is why I don't join book clubs because of the required reading which is alot of time the type of books I don't care for. Reading is my private pleasure and want to do books that I enjoy and sometime escape into a fantasy world.

Debra and Maria---Where are you two? We miss you.

A hi:wave2: to our other Ohana team mates.

Need to get busy and clean the house.

Nancy
