Team 6 - Team Ohana - Check in and introduce!

Richard: Ah that sucks about heel pain. I know heel pain well myself too - the evil plantar fascitis in my left foot. It doesn't usually hurt when I'm running, just after but still ugh. Boo to heel pain!

Jen: Snow still? Double ugh's!

Jeanne: Oooh icky water situation at the race. This is always my conundrum - do I wear my water belt thing and carry my own or rely on the organizers. This kind of story makes me think definitely carry my own. At least you didn't catch anything...yet...LOL.

Debra: Sounds like you managed to have a great trip! And ooh, you got a ton of fun presents! Yay for presents haha.

Morgan: HI! :)

Christa: You'd think if parents are spending the money and taking the time to bring their kids around to you, they'd be more proactive in following through. Guess not. I don't know how they expect "magic" to happen and everything will be ok.

Maria: Hope you are starting to recover from that cold!

Moi: I had my MRI on Tuesday. I am not a doctor, but I have attempted to become one this past week. I've been reading and researching and I think I have discovered a horizontal tear on my anterior meniscus, as spotted in one of the sagittal scans (does that sound impressive?). On the scan the meniscus is supposed to look like a bow tie with the anterior (front) and posterior (back) forming it. There's a scan which it is definitely not a triangle and there are two pieces separated by "white space". So that's my story, we'll see if that is my doc's story when I go back on the 21st.

Other than that, we had an EPIC volleyball match on Monday. My team ended up in 1st place and we played the 4th place team in the first playoff round (need a best of 5 game win). This is a team that we could pretty easily beat all year. Well, we won the first game, lost the next TWO, and then thankfully won the last two. We often "beat ourselves", not because other teams are better than us, but we just start losing focus and balls go flying everywhere. This very much happened to us Monday until we had our backs against the wall and just needed to refocus and regroup which we managed to do. The best part though is that in the next match which was #2 vs. #3, that the #3 team managed to beat the #2 team in 3 games! The #2 team is very much our "arch-nemesis" so we are thrilled that we don't have to play them this Monday in the finals!

Shell--- You assessment of your injury sounds very impressive. Let us know what the doctor's diagnosis is. Do you get a discount for self diagnosis. :rotfl2:

Did my last LW 9.25 miles in preparation for the Minnie. It was a nice Spring day except that my asthma is acting up so had to load up with my inhalers before walking. This is the time of year when I have problems so did a little slower pace than normal. But is done and felt good after.

Hope everyone is having a good weekend.

Nancy

Jen: I can't believe how much cold weather and snow you've gotten this season. I think you're going to have to rename Butt Kicker to Sanity Maker, because it (he? she?) might be the only thing that keeps you from going stir crazy.

Morgan: Welcome to the family, Morgan. I'm a time grad of C25K, too, although I don't have a 5K planned until May. I think it's great that Jeff is with you in body and, somewhat, in spirit! And happy upcoming birthday, too! (I love birthdays. :goodvibes )

Nancy: How's the weather in your neck of the PA woods? We've been getting really warm days alternating with cooler days, with sprinkles in between. I find it makes it hard to get into an outdoor training groove, although it's nice to be outdoors every day. I think you did a great job with your 9.25 LW today! P.S. I know someone who works for the national government (PA region) with Airlines Inspections, and I think he's going to get an ulcer before this is all over.

Jeanne: I love your Poly story precisely because it's a mini-picture of yours and John's relationship. I feel kind of similar; I never imagined us staying at the Poly as our first travel experience was staying at Chicago's Ohio Motel for a friend's wedding (a real dive). Even today, we usually try Priceline before other options. So DOOD's booking of the Poly was a real splurge.

Christa: It sounds like some of your clients (patients?) are a real trip. I can't imagine how stressful it can be, but I do note with a great deal of pride (and maybe a little amusement) that your reaction to stress is to rack of the miles. You go, girl! :thumbsup2 I'm sorry to hear about your and DSis not doing the 1/2, but I guess you get to save the entry fees for a race you're (both?) really excited about!

Julie: I'm just like you--want to clean house before vacation. My place will never look like a hotel room, but I like to come home to a near approximation of one. I can't ask you to ride ToT for me, but do try to ride your favorite ride and think fondly of those of us who are missing out on the fun! :lmao:

Maria: I'm so sorry to learn that you've been sick. It's just been one trial after another. :sad2: When you get better, remember that Old Faithful misses your presence (as do we here on Ohana).

Shell: Your diagnosis DOES sound impressive, and a bit overwhelming. (Maybe a bit disgusting? I have a weak stomach.) I hope that your research pays off, that you and your doctor can plan a productive strategy. Also, :woohoo: on your volleyball team's match & rankings--not to mention congratulations to team #3 (because they should have a good win before you take them down on Monday)! :cheer2:

Scott:  We you just checking up to see if Ohana was planning a Cousin Cycling event to match the Bunnies Bike-a-thon? I hope your team event went spinningly, because the Panda has been spreading the secret far & wide! I'll see if we can come up with some of our secret strategies to "share" with you!

As for me: I love getting away for a quick weekend, but it always seems like it takes me twice as long to get back in the swing of things. Laundry is still piled up! DOOD & I did some walking today in the neighborhood next to ours; our landlord has told us she's converting the house back from a duplex to a single-family residence, so we'll need to find new digs at the end of the lease. Since it's way before our plans to buy, we need to find another place soon.

The good news is, that means I logged lots of walking today, up and down Squirrel Hills, well, hills. The bad news is, DOOD and I did this after our WOs, which including LRs for both of us (8 miles for me) and biking. I'm sooooo sore.

Also, I thought I'd share my fierce & fabulous character picture of me & Stitch from the Ohana character breakfast. Mind you, I was SUPPOSED to look fierce in the pic, but DOOD made me laugh just as he was taking the picture. So I just look nutters. Oh, well, I have to have at least one picture taken on every trip that I should be embarrassed by. As to why I'm sharing it....:confused3 Well, maybe because Stitch looks fabulous! :rotfl2:

CIMG1230-1.jpg

Scott - What is this I hear of a Bike a Thon???? Are you trying to mastermind a mileage take over??????pirate:

Debra - I like your pic!!! I have a cute one of my girls with Lilo at the Ohana breakfast. That was a fun breakfast for us last year!!!

OK, I have been under the weather today.... feeling just plain rotten with a headache, nausea, etc. No long run today. If I feel better tomorrow I will LR, otherwise I will try to walk 4 on the TM. The snow didn't melt today because it was only 30ish with winds. But they promised us by Tuesday/Wednesday we will be in the 50's.

Oh hey, the 5 mile run that I was going to do today still happened. I am not sure how many people showed up, the trail had a good 3 inches of sloppy slushy snow on it, making it nice and mucky. I am glad I didn't head out to ruin a pair of shoes!!!!

Scott - I saw you peeking....

Debra - I love your pic! You look Oh so scarry...and really beautiful at the same time.

WOW Shell, You should be a doc!

Jen I am so sorry you are sick...Hope you feel better soon.

Lets see...I only ran around 3 miles of hill work today. I was going to the YMCA later, but just ran out of time. My foot is feeling better so I guess I can hit it tomorrow after my shows.
I am trying to regroup from not doing the race today...:lmao: ..That sounded funny. I am not used to saying I will be doing a race then not doing it...It messes up my, well it messes up something.
SO...Looking at a 5k on the 26th and may (if DOOC says yes $$$ wise) do a metric century ride on May 10th (that is not 100 miles but 100 KM and that is 60ish miles). We will see.

Kelley: That is so sad about DS's friends. I hope that you all find healing.

Debra: LOVE, LOVE, LOVE that photo. It's awesome.

And a big HAHA - I could so never ever be a doctor. If only you could've all seen me while I was looking at the slides. My mom was in the room at the time and she was just like "WHAT ARE YOU DOING?" because I kept shuddering and getting the creeps. I said how I was looking at my slides and she just said "Well stop!" I always said if I ever became a doctor I'd need my own doctor to follow me around to revive me when I passed out from the sights. I have a really weak stomach as well when it comes to that stuff. The worst part about the scans was my muscles and how they show up on the slides. YUCK! :scared1: I don't like them, well, I like that I have muscles, but I don't like looking at them.

Hi Everyone! (with apologies for those of you who have already read this in another thread)

It has been quite the week for us -- so forgive my rare postings. I was a sick puppy until Friday, and I'm still recoverying. Tuesday night we got a call that my grandfather had passed away -- he was 92 and had Alzheimer's, so it wasn't a complete shock. Anyway, I couldn't make it back to Missouri for the funeral, so I feel a bit guilty about that. Wednesday night ds came home with a note in his backpack that there was no afterschool Thursday, and an important parent meeting Thursday night. I was still sick, but I agreed to watch a friend's daughter so her husband could go while she was at work. My dh and the other dad came home with the news that the school is closing. They also had sheets from three other local Catholic elementary schools -- with not enough slots for the kids. DH took Friday off and quickly secured ds a slot next year at a fantastic school -- but none of his friends will be going with him. All the kids are heartbroken and distraught. I didn't go to work Wednesday or Thursday because I was sick, so I had to go in Friday. I spent the day trying to get work done, and talking to dh on the phone as he was making arrangements. I had to leave work at 2 so I could tour the potential new school, and I didn't get half of what I needed done. Yesterday was the anniversary of my Mom's passing in 2002.

Honestly, if I didn't have walking, I would be a basket case right now. I did 5.5 miles yesterday, and a half hour today after a stationary bike ride. It all feels very surreal. It's just been too much too quickly. I feel like I need to sleep for a week, but I have a huge deadline at work Friday, so none of that for me. If you don't hear from me much this week, it's 'cause I'm spending my awake time at work or on the TM, or consoling ds.

Not doing a Debra, but thinking of each of you and wishing you a great week!

Maria

Well, I typed a nice long response early, early Sunday morning and when I clicked to send it I got a nice little notice telling me the boards were going down for a few hours. I thought maybe, just maybe, it had been saved, but no such luck.

Maria: so sorry that life seems to be cutting you no slack lately. My sincere condolences on your grandfathre's passing. That is so awful about the school closing like that. Will your son at least be able to finish out the year?
We all have times when life just seems to overwhelm us. Take a little time for yourself to relax and get away. If it's a walk, don't think of it as training. Maybe just indulge in a nice hot tub for a little bit....or treat yourself to a latte. Remember that things will eventually improve and return to normal. We're all here for you girl.

Jen: you just can't seem to get a break from the snow, can you? Actually, I spoke with my daughter yesterday and she reported it was also snowing in Michigan...and not just flurries. Did someone forget to tell Mother Nature that it is APRIL already!

Julie: I'm exactly the same way. My house has got to be perfect before I leave for vacation. It totally drives my husband nuts because I am a basket case just before we go. And it's not only the house.....all the bills and paperwork have to be in order too. I'm so afraid something will happen and #1) I want to make it as easy as possible for my kids. #2) I don't want anybody who has to go through my stuff thinking I'm a slob!

Nancy: WTG with the long walk. I have been such a slacker lately. It's a good thing I did that half-marathon because it's going to end up being my only distance training. We might have to resort to taking turns with the heelies again.

Shell:Too funny about looking at your slides! I hope all goes well when you get the final diagnosis.

Debra: LOVE the photo of you and Stitch! I think that's the first time I've seen a photo and you're not pulling a KISS stunt! (gee, will the young'uns even know what I mean?) Well at least now I'll be able to recognize you at a WISH meet!

Maria---Sending a big  to you. Sorry to hear about your grandfather. When our elementary schools were going to consolidate all the 7th and 8th grades into the Catholic HS at least we had some notice that was going to occur. I hope that things will all work out for you.

Jen---Hope you are feeling better soon.

Great picture Debra. Now we know what you look like so it will be hard to hide from us.

Nancy

Jen: Oh, Scott's a sly one, he is! He team is going to ride away with this month, I think! :rotfl2: I certainly hope your seasonal luck--weather, illness, etc.--changes soon. You might just be giving Butt Kicker too much attention otherwise. P.S. I'd love to see the pics of your girls & Lilo!

Christa: In terms of the pick, I vote for looks really scary... As far as you not doing a race, I'm thinking it messes up lots of things, right? Your long-term stategy, for one. Social plans during the period of training. Playing around with new things (now, that sounds dirty). And maybe even the emotional side--I think you were geared up for an event & am surprised you haven't crashed because it didn't happen. So for your physical & mental health, I think you just HAVE to do an event--soon! :goodvibes

Shell: I think your ability to look at the slides, to do research, and listen to your doctor all speaks to your strength. I remember the first time I learned about how muscles get stronger--I because a little nauseated. Ewww. :scared: You, however, go beyond that initial reaction to become an advocate for your own health and treatment. Pretty cool, IMO.

Maria: I know I posted on another thread, but I just wanted to let you know how proud I am that we're on the same team. You've taken all these circumstances--one after the other--and not only survived them, you've conquered them. You have tons of inner & outer strength! :flower3: And Jeanne's advice is so good that all I can say is follow it!

Jeanne: I don't know about the young'uns, but I know what you mean by a KISS stunt. I hadn't thought of it that way, but now that you mention it....I'm pretty darn proud of those moments! You're going to do fine at the Minnie. But no heelies! :rotfl:

Nancy: Remember, it's your job to watch out for Jeanne. And no heelies! (And I'd never try to hide from my teammates--just (other) stalkers! :rotfl2: )

As for me: Today was a SR and a bike ride--indoors, as it was too chilly for the likes of me this early a.m. (But we're expecting warm weather later this week :woohoo:) I'm really looking forward to tomorrow's active rest day, as my knees are letting my know I haven't taken one since the 4th. :scared1:

In other news, DOOD & I have started the new apartment search & went to a couple of open houses; the former to find new digs, the latter to get a sense of the market. I suppose it's good for us to find out now that we have slightly different priorities in terms of buying a house--open dialogue cleanses the soul, right? ;)

Hey Team Ohana... GUESS WHAT... nope, it's not snowing... IT'S WARM!!!! Well not Hot warm, but warm enough to play outside. When we got home, DD7 and I went for a run/walk. We did almost a mile at run 1 minute/walk 1 minute. She is my little runner girl. Dad and DDalmost 5 rode the bike with the tag along and harrassed us the whole time. It was great family fun!!

Then DD7 and I went on the bike and tag along (that is mini bike that hooks on the back for a child to ride). We did 2 miles on that. Then I did 10 minutes of core ball workout. So it was a mini-workout, but a workout non the less.

Debra, I think I have that pic on the other computer. Will have to look and upload it for you soon.

Hi Everyone!

Taking a quick break this afternoon to post -- Maria cannot live by work alone! ;)

Thanks so much to everyone for all the fantastic encouragement. You guys are awesome! :grouphug:

Yesterday I walked to a meeting Downtown and back, which is a total of an hour at a brisk pace, and about 4 miles. I considered that my workout. Today I walked at lunch, and I'll hop on the TM when I get home.

For those of you following the saga, ds had an interview at a great school this morning, and he's all set for next year. His school is open until the end of this year, so at least I don't have to worry about anything on that front.

Jen -- It sounds like you had awesome family time! I am so glad, and I hope you have seen your last snow for the season :cold:

Debra -- It does take a little time to check out what's available, but I'm sure you will find the perfect living space. Ok, nothing's perfect, but I'm sure you will find one that will make you giddy! :cutie:

Nancy -- I think that's part of the unrest in our community. Registation for all the schools next year, public and private, was in January. We could have all had time to process and make choices if we had had proper notice. I guess they were afraid people would pull their kids and send them elsewhere. :confused3

Jeanne -- Thanks for the great advice. This week is pretty nuts, but I have planned to have three days off next week (school vacation), and I'm going to make sure ds and I relax. I usually make us focus on household projects, but this year we're taking some time to just have fun. :lovestruc

Shell -- Just the fact that you looked at your slides...you are hardcore!:goodvibes

Christa -- It is very discombobulating when we plan for something, and then aren't able to do it. It sounds like you've already found new focus, though, so that is awesome! :thumbsup2

Julie -- Have a wonderful trip to the World! Ride Space Mountain for me! :stitch2:

Richard, Morgan, Mel and all the other cousins -- Hope you are having a fantastic week!

Maria

Hey Ohana...real quick!
I posted this on the weekly thread, but, I will post it here too.
Ran 8 miles in 1:07
8:23 pace ave
35 out, 31 in...neg splits!:cool1: :cool1:

OK gotta get off...Homework is now calling b/4 rehearsal.

Hi everyone!

Well good news! No, not about my knee - my volleyball team won the playoffs! We're champions! It's great, but now I'm sad its over until October! I switched modes almost immediately though - practice for softball has begun. Even though I may miss some games, I'm still working out. Boy was I tired after that practice - my body isn't used to softball moves just yet.

Today I had an exceptionally bad afternoon caused by an extremely rude email that I got, not much I could do about the email but send it onto the next person to deal with as its really not my place (but I was still hopping mad ), so I went out for my "maintenance" 2 mile run and just flew. Since I've been back running somewhat again, I've taken it slow (1) because I don't want to get hurt again and (2) I lost major endurance/conditioning. Therefore I've been running 2 miles in a little over 26 minutes. Today though? Yeah - 2 miles in 23 minutes. It pays to be mad, I should pay someone to make me mad before every run! (This is not the best I've ever run 2 miles, I was somewhat faster before I got hurt, but this is definitely the best in the past 3 months!)

What an awsome pace Christa.

Good job Corinna.

Jen-- Glad that you are starting to get warmer weather. It will be an adjustment for you when you get to Flordia for the Minnie.

Debra---Hope you are able to find a new apartment soon. Go Penguins. :thumbsup2

Maria-- I am really surprised about the way the school incident was handled. In our Diocese everything is discussed and needs the Bishop approval before it is implemented. It looks like everything is following in place for your son to make the transition to his new school in the fall.

Did 4 miles yesterday outside in the beautiful spring day, it was nearly 70. It is to be warmer today so should be able to get in another walk and wear my running skirt. I only wore it that one time with a little ride up on the right thigh area so am going to use body glide to see if it will stay down better. I would like to wear it for the Minnie, but want to do a few more walks with it to see how comfortable it will be. Otherwise will be in my old adidis capris that I wear for every race.

Hope everyone is doing well.

Nancy

Jen: I just love that your whole family is athletic & that being healthy is part of your lifestyle collectively. That's so different from my growing up, and such a welcome departure from all the news I hear about today's kids & their sedentary lives.

Maria: It's great to read about all the WOs & walking you've been incorporating into your days. I'm sure it has helped you manage the stress that you've been experiencing with everything that's been going on. Good news about your DS's new school placement. How is he taking the shift & future separation from his pals?

Christa: Anything new going on with your shows that we should know about? How's your mom doing? I see from your WO log you had a challenging bike ride, but way to tough it out! :woohoo:

Shell:  for the volleyball champ status! That is excellent news! I'm glad you've been taking it easy on your runs, balancing your need to get out there & to maintain your fitness level with care for your leg. I'm amazed that I'm saying this, but running is a good way to handle the stress of the day, like when you get nasty emails.

Nancy: Ah, yes, Penguins. I need to stop thinking Bingham when people mention them. I hope your running skirt settles into place nicely--it seems like lots of folks like them & that they're attractive. I tend to like my capris, though, or my men's shorts. But I hope you get a chance to model your new outfit in the Minnie finisher photo ops.

As Nancy said, I hope all my cousins are doing well & enjoying the transition to spring. A special shout-out to Mel, who I know has had some major LTO issues, and to Corrina, who is wisely resting and avoiding further injury!! :grouphug:

As for me: I'm DISing on my porch. It's sunny outside, the birds are chirping, and I see all these people walking their dogs. Very peaceful, except for some odd traffic. In some ways I'll miss it.

But things around here have turned kind of weird since my landlord lowered the boom with the moving out. Nothing I can really put my finger on as truly uncomfortable, just little things. Like for the first time she's left laundry in the machine for an entire day instead of taking care of it promptly (we share). Or a couple of notes she's left about various things. One was a reminder about a drive to donate goods as part of spring cleaning--she mentioned she was donating a lot of things to make room in the basement for her BF's things, because there wasn't a lot of room down there with 3 people's stuff (we make up 2 of the 3 people). I'm probably being too sensitive about it--or maybe my reaction indicates I'm really ready for my own place.

In the meantime, though, we need to rejigger our summer plans. DOOD is planning on spending the month of June in D.C. (his annual research trip), which means I'll be doing the bulk of the moving. We were supposed to go to Cambridge in July, but that looks like it might be out. On the upside, maybe that means we can do some local events! :woohoo:

Debra: sorry about the landlady situation. I can see how you are feeling awkward, especially since those recent incidents don't seem at all subtle to me. When do you have to be out?

I'm just giving everyone a heads up that I will be leaving tomorrow morning for Charleston to attend a wedding. Several other couples that we play golf with are also going so we are making nice weekend out of it. And since we are all traveling from out of town, we have been invited to the rehearsal dinner on Friday night also. We should get home at around 5pm on Sunday and then we are rushing out to attend a Passover seder. We have good friends who are Jewish and it is considered quite an honor to be included in this special event. So, needless to say, I will not be on the computer at all beginning tomorrow morning. I will take care of all the postings Monday and address any issues that may arise. Have a wonderful weekend, everybody!

Enjoy the weekend, Jeanne--it sounds like it should be a great time on counts: wedding, friends, seder. Don't you think of us for a moment--just be in the moment. :goodvibes

And I don't mean to mischaracterize my landlady. She's been quite nice to us for the most part. DOOD & I speculate she's feeling guilty about the news, which represents the general challenge of our relationship: there's this fuzzy line between a business & personal relationship that has never been resolved. She's a life coach, so her tendency is to nurture people. We were new to the area and she was relocating back to Pgh after several years in D.C., so it seemed like the perfect opportunity to meet new people & make friends.

She's trying, I think, to retroactively establish boundaries that didn't exist as she separates from us emotionally. And she's trying to redefine the relationship as between landlady & tenant. That's fine--appropriate--but it's new rules, KWIM? Once she got in her serious relationship with the BF, things got complicated--and he's got no problem establishing his territoriality. Anyway, I think being a landlady in residence was more difficult for her than she imagined. So it's really just gone from an unusual situation to an awkward situation.

Oh, and the real answer to your question. :lmao: We need to be out by the end of June. DOOD would like to ask for an extension until the 1st of August, but I'm not feeling optimistic or comfortable with that now.

Looks like we'll quite a few from Team Ohana at the Minnie. I've been trying to figure out what accessory to add to represent for our team. Anyone with any suggestions? We have some leis from the Poly, but I think that might drive me nuts for 9.3 miles. I thought about printing our team graphic on some sticker paper to stick on my WISH shirt.
