only problem is that my kids will quit the team, why do they need to use punitive punishment....try postive behavioral intervention it works much better, don't understand why they don't get it. Talked to the principal this morning cause the teacher e-mailed the coach and said that my son had a problem yesterday morning (forgot to take his meds). I freaked and called the principal. Talked to him this morning, they better figure out a better way.:laundy:

I guess I need more information before I can comment. Is the teacher saying your son cannot play baseball at all because of his behavior? How old is your son? Is the team affiliated with the school or the rec department? What did your son do?

It is quite common that schools consider sports a privilege, not a right, and that certain academic and behavioral goals must be met in order to be able to participate.

Info leading to the punishment needs to be revealed.

As for quitting... around here(my house), once you join a team you finish the season. Team quitting is not allowed, no matter the reason.

IMO, the challenge is finding the appropriate motivation for an individual student to address whatever the issue is. For many students involved in sports, playing on the team is what they really enjoy and having that threatened is a powerful motivator. If that's the case, "get your grades up or no baseball" or "stay out of trouble or no baseball" would be a good approach.

It doesn't sound like that's the case with your son, however, so a different approach likely would be better. Not knowing him and what would push the right buttons, I can't say what that would be. Maybe if you could provide the school with some ideas for appropriate motivators they would be willing to try them?

I think you need to explain your position again. I dont think we got everything.....:confused3

if your son is on school related teams( ie: jr team, hs team), get used to it.

It is going to happen over and over again.

It is a priveledge to be on the sports team, and the teacher's know, the kids do NOT want to anger the coach, so they use it against them.

Right or wrong, they do it!

At our school, if you have a detention you are benched a game automatically!

If the coach gets a behavior call, you are running your *#*# off during practice!

Luckily, as of yet, my son has not had any behavior problems, but watching the other kids that do...might be the best thing yet! He knows he doesn't want to be in their shoes!

Good Luck!

Count me in as part of the group that has no idea what you are asking?

I have no clue what you are talking about. Can you please elaborate a lot more so we can give you our thoughts??

I think is what happened is her son was misbehaving in class and the teacher emailed the coach and told him about the player/son's behavior in the classrom. My guess is the teacher knows the coach has more "power" to make him tow the line than she does.

This is my guess!

I agree that the coaches should know what the players are doing inside the classrooms if this is a school sponsored team. Playing sports if a priviledge not a right. If you cannot behave inside a classroom how could the players be expected to behave in public while representing the team, school, and coach?

In other words, I don't believe the teacher was wrong in alerting the coach to a behavioral problem in class. For a school sponsored event the two are not mutually disclusive.

If that is truly what is being discussed(son is on team, teacher using it as "punishment", i.e. informing coach when son doesn't behave) this is very common. I resent it more when our administrators coddle athletes and let them do whatever they want to have a successful team. However, your teacher telling the coach that son did not take his meds is way out of line. For one thing, that isn't the teacher's business unless the student used it as an excuse--"sorry I wouldn't stop talking when you told me to but I forgot my meds this morning." Then it becomes the teacher's business.
And depending on the age, positive reinforcement does not always work. I have seniors 25 school days away from being finished with school. Some of them have already checked out mentally and no amount of "good job, I'm glad to see you today, what a great answer!" will help.

bb = baseball?

I imagine it is, since High School baseball is in season while Basketball is over.

Both of my kids play high school sports and it is understood that they are expected to behaive in class and perform to set standards in order to stay on said teams.

As a parent I would not be upset with the teacher in this case... :confused3
