teachers...how do I find an online master's program

It seems that more and more are offering online graduate programs. The California state university in my area is offering an online grad program this fall for the first time.

I was going to say the same thing-most of the 4 year colleges here that have large teaching schools have online programs for masters degrees.

Call your state liscening board directly and ask if they accept degree in X subject area from the universities you are interested in.

My husband got his through Walden University in middle grades science, however the state would not accept a Master's degree from Walden in School Admin/Leadership which is what another teacher was working on. The other teacher had only completed one semester, so it wasn;t too much of a loss for him to stop when he found out the state would not accept it.

Also try looking at brick and motar schools in your state and see which ones do have programs online. My undergrad university, offered on campus programs which over the years they slowly moved to online programs. Then the state created and Internet Unoversity linking together many of the state schools into an online portal. I am working on my Master's in Instructional Technology though my undergrad school/online protal.

Most of the teachers I know went for their masters either there or Marygrove. I can only speak for Walden but I have to say...it's not bad at all! I LOVE that I don't have to "go" to class, I can do the work on my time. I was even able to do my work in advance so I could take a week-long vacation...just had to log on once or twice to submit work. If you want anymore information, PM me!

I just finished my masters in school counseling at UWA (University of West Alabama) in May. 100% online. I am now certified to be a school counselor in MS, and I got a $4000 pay raise for my masters. I know they offered other programs, but not sure what.

What concentration are you looking for?

Schools off the top of my head that offer Master's in Education are: University of Massachusetts, University of New England, Penn State University, George Washington University, Jersey City University, Drexel University, University of Maryland, & University of North Carolina.

I'm sure that there are many, many more. These are schools that I investigated when thinking about going for my Master's.

I'd be surprised if your state doesn't offer a program, many colleges are linked together now, as it's become very very popular for so many. Our son is doing his Master's on line at University of Maryland and doing great. Also our SonIL's in process doing on line w/Duke to advance his nursing degree. Best wishes on your endeavor!

tHanks for the info - I've just begun to think of this option- I was registered for classes up until yesterday @ my private college I just gaduated from. But I've heard from other folks talking to be careful -cause not all programs are accepted - so that's what has made me concerned.

I will be getting an alternative masters- which I'm not postitive which schools offer that online. At my school n the other school nearby offer the masters along with the teacher certificTion- but not online.

What i'd like is a reading specialist or media specialist. But around here you have to have been a classroom teacher for 3 yrs before you can get a masters-- I'm guessing that's a state thing.

yay, you are done!! I finish this coming Spring. Have been clocking the billion hours for my internship. Did you see where new enrollees have to have 600 hours? Wow, 300 is hard enough.

Vettechick is the reason I found UWA! So I can thank you for my degree-who would think you'd find an online counseling program while reading a disney message board!

Someone told me about the 600 hours-I'm so glad I finished before that happened. The 300 hours almost killed me. I was tight with our counselor last year-offering to help do anything and everything I could. I And my professor barely looked at my stuff, and never even told me I passed. I noticed that class was missing from my blackboard list, and went into my online transcript and saw my grade.

Our counselor left over the summer, and I went in and talked to the administration. but they had already hired a teacher with more seniority. I understand, but it sucks. There is only one counselor at my school, so I will more than likely have to switch schools, and move my kids, to get a counseling job. But I have the degree!

It's so awesome you are done. I took just one class a term and took the summer off and this next term for the baby. So I have two classes plus the rest of my internship. Who was your instructor for that? I'm worried about the video tapes!

Bummer about the counselor job. I think I'm going to have to move up to Middle to get a job, but I'll happily do it. I am good friends with that principal's wife (he knows I want that job!!) and know the Superintendent fairly well, so I hope that helps the cause. Keep me posted on if you find a position.

Yea - a friend of mine said she was working on her master's thru them - she has not finished & isn't currently taking any classes -but she talked about how good it was - that's why I started wondering about doing it all online instead of continuing @ the private school. I'm so torn - cause when I have to drag myself to class I think I'll do better. I've taken one class online & it about killed me! It was so much work & hard to do with the kiddos around - but now that I know what to expect & how to pace myself it may be better.

BUT I'm also a strange case - my transcript is a huge mess! LOL with dropping out of college 16yrs ago (was almost finished with education then) & then now finally finishing with a completlely different degree - someone will have to look @ my transcript with a fine tooth comb to see what I need to take. And then somehow figure out what I need to get my treacher certificate - if that's even available online.
