I am starting to look for a new computer. I have had mine since 1996. So obviously, things have changed a lot since then. Besides watching movies and listening to music on the computer, why else would I want to get a system with all the extras? Right now I don't think I need all those extras, but I am afraid maybe I don't know what I am missing! I am a teacher, so besides using the computer for e-mail, e-bay,web surfing and paying bills, I would also be using this system for creating lesson plans.

Hi, I use my DVD player on my laptop at school, but don't use a CD or DVD burner at school. I do however have a CD burner on my desktop PC which I use for some school things.

Well, I can tell you that one of my teachers that I work with uses a CD burner a lot!

He burns quite a few media presentations, and plays them on the PC! (He's a science teacher, so he uses the CD for experiements and such that are shown online)

As for DVD, well, my school district stops at VCR's. There aren't even any DVDs in the school library.

I am also a teacher and I am really glad I have a CD burner on my computer at home because I had to use it for a college class. I have also used it to burn a Power Point that I presented. If I had to depend on school, I would have been in big trouble because none of the computers at my school has a CD burner.

I take a lot of digital pictures for work so I use it a lot. I also have copies of music that I might listen to or let my students listen to and don't have to worry if they "walk" off.

Good questions-we are looking for a new computer too. What would we use a DVD burner for? I have a Dell priced and configured with it, but not sure that we need it.

How much is it without it? I use mine so far primarily for backing up digital pictures. I just copied over abbout 18,000 pictures the other day, all on one disk.

I would go with a mid price range PC.

Here few choices that I would look at before I set foot into a Circuit City or Best Buy.

Processor speed 2.8 or higher Type AMD or Cerlon. Cerlon is cheap processor

RAM 512 Do not buy anything lower

DVD - +RW make sure plays both

CD - RW

17 inch flat screen monitor. If go high end get LCD flat screen monitor to save space

Make sure it's upgrade to the future.

Modem 56k

USB ports

Network card 10/100 Ethernet

Hard drive space least 80 larger

I would tried 7-1 media reader for digtal cameras and peripicals to

Here a few computers that I would recommend:

Hee-hee Dan-it may be free! I need to go back and look at what I picked out at Dell. I have confused myself again. Is photo quality burned on DVD's better than on CD's? And is burning to a CD as good as the quality on my memory card that goes in my camera? I am a mess!::yes::
