Teachers/Assistants/Subs....question

What are some part time jobs that would fit into a teacher's hours.

I am currently a sub-teachers. We've had terrible weather and with so many missed days I am seriously needed another job.

I am trying to find a night/weekend job so I would still be able to teacher. Also I have 5 kids that I need to plan around.

When I was a para (assistant) I had a part time job on the weekend at the Gap. They worked around my schedule and loved that I could only work weekends (when no one else wanted to work).

I'm a teacher now, don't work at the Gap anymore

I'm a para (the term para-pro always makes me laugh, no one acts like we are pros at anything ) and I WISH I lived near a big mall so I could do weekend in a GAP or the like. I do work in our afterschool program but two extra hours a day, five days a week is very wearing. Especially when you then come home to dinner, homework, baths, etc... Also, it is like being a para or sub - if you don't work you don't get paid. So all these weather days I am losing para pay (for the last 2) plus my secondary pay (for all.) On top of that January is such a "short month" for our afterschool program that my check was barely going to break $100 if we worked all the possible days. I really don't plan to continue it, too much stress for too little pay back.

I would just be leary of a secondary job. They usually mean minimal hours, minimal extra pay and can really wear you down. Now, if I didn't have kids I would probably not mind so much.

Have you considered tutoring? I work 6 hours a week, tutoring in my basement. Monday and Tuesday evenings. In my area tutors make between $30 and $45 an hour, depending on the level they are tutoring at.

I have been teaching for about 10 years. I also waitress 6 months out of the year to make ends meet. I live near the shore and have been working at the the same seasonal restaurant for 6 years. I waitress part time from May until school gets out. Then full time over the summer and pt again in Sept. and Oct. Waitressing is hard work but it's usually pretty good money and most restaurants will work around your schedule. If you don't have experience, places like Friendly's or Applebee's will train you. You won't make a lot at first but after you have experience you'll be able to move on. I've been serving for 22 years and plan on doing it at long as I can.

Former teacher here and I used to do wedding cakes as a side business. The weddings are heaviest in the summer and on the weekends, a perfect fit. My Friday nights, for years, were spent baking cakes and my Saturday mornings were filled decorating them.

I had a friend who worked as a grocery check out gal for the overnight shift Friday and Saturday nights. Her husband had the weekends off and so he took care of the kids and she slept in their camper so she had some peace and quiet. During the winter she had an electric blanket and during the summer she ran a small window air conditioner. It was not ideal, but it kept them afloat during a couple lean years when medical and therapy bills for their special needs child pushed them to the financial limit.

I have another friend who works for her local university offering rides to drunk/drinking people. She drives a university van, so they are not puking in her personal car, and the hours are in the evening on the weekends, which would work with you. So, if you are near a university, you could call and see if they have something like that. Unlike driving a cab, she gets paid by the hour. She is allowed to accept tips, which adds up.

I think I was very fortunate to teach where I was....we ALWAYS had ways to make extra money. There was after school tutoring, Saturday school (another tutoring service), off track subbing, and test proctoring on Saturdays.

We also had the opportunity to teach all 6 class hours per day vs the normal 5 and we got paid for an additional hour per day that way. It was killer (because you still had to find time to grade those papers!), but I loved those paychecks.

You could sign up through the school district to be a "home instructor." Home instructors teach children who are home sick or out of school for other reasons. You make your own hours and either meet at the child's home, their home school or the public library. I did if for years.

My friend found Kohls to be a good second job, but her husband finally made her quit because she found so many good deals there that she was spending all her extra pay. Employee discounts were good too.

Some of the social service agencies look for respite workers or "pass" workers to work with special needs kids and sometimes adults on behavioral and social goals, to take them on community outings or just for respite time for parents or caregivers. This might be something to check into for you. Usually it is a few hours a week or so, I believe, but sometimes respite can be overnights.

I teach and then babysit after school for one child. It isn't nearly as bad as doing afterschool, since it is one child and they pay me very well. Sometimes I keep him all day if schools are closed or we are on a break and then that is REALLY some good money.

tutoring would probably get you the most $ per hour, although I did sell Tupperware and Tastefully Simple in the past to make extra $$$ with some success

My sister teaches viola or violin. She actually offers the lessons at the private school she teaches at (the school is okay with that).

A lot of teachers in our area have part time weekend jobs at places like Old Navy and Eddie Bauer. Retail stores often will employ for weekends only since those are their busiest times.

My mom was very crafty and she kept us going for years while she put herself through college and even when she first started teaching.

I know a lot of teachers who work in retail or starbucks on the weekends.

I know some who babysit on snow days, after school and in the summer.

I have applied at local stores, but they are not hiring. Part of the problem is our area. We were/still are being hit hard by the economy. Our county has a high unemployment rate. Starbucks wants complete flexibility...able to work any hours any days.

Most teachers I know do tutoring....thus there are currently no openings. But I am going to keep my eyes open.

I would love to waitress, I do keep my eyes open, but most college kids get those jobs.

Have you looked into day care centers? I'm a teacher and I know a teacher in our school who works at a child care center from 4 to 9. The center uses 5 hour shift workers, from 6am to 11 am, 11 am to 4 pm and from 4 pm until they close at 9 pm.
