Afternoon!

This is DS5's first year of school so I need some suggestions on "good" gifts for teachers. Mrs. J has been VERY helpful this year. I was a mess when school started and she's been amazing both with him and keeping me in the loop of things happening at school. I'd like to spend under $25 if possible but don't want to get her something she's just going to toss in the trash.

I also need a gift for Mrs. J's assistant and the bus driver. Any suggestions for those two as well? I'm thinking something smaller than Mrs. J for both but I have no clue what the "protocall" is for anything like this. I don't really know any of the parents with kids in the school to ask them. The couple I do know - 1 I'm sure buys nothing and the other I'm sure does something amazing.

So what are good gifts and what should I avoid all together????

TIA!! :goodvibes

My favorite gifts are gift cards to any of the following:
Borders
Michael's
Target
A.C. Moore
Barnes & Noble

Those gift cards NEVER get thrown out
:teacher:

Absolutely avoid:
anything apple themed
lotions
candles
picture frames
ornaments

As a teacher I just want to second this post. Those are all great suggestions and good ideas for what to avoid!!

I love all gifts from my students but really like the ones that I can actually use. :thumbsup2

I usually do gift cards. the last couple of years one of the moms has collected money from those who want to donate and its worked out great because most folks do. doesn't matter what they give...people give what they can. but we figure we can give more this way, ya know? last spring we collected a good amount and we were able to give the teacher a coach wristlet (from the outlet, and on sale!) with a couple of gift cards inside. she LOVED it.

I agree with the above posters, and want to add coffee mugs as gifts to avoid. I once gave a kindergarten teacher a huge basket of school supplies - crayons, markers, glue sticks, pencils, craft items - and she really appreciated it, since it was her first year teaching. I also gave her a small gc.

I always give personal gift cards to local places where they can get coffee before work or maybe dinner on a parent - teacher conference day. Around here they have a Duncan Donuts one block over and a Panera down the street. The gift cards are good for everyone.

My bus driver always smiles when she gets a donut in a bag and a cup of coffee with all the fixens' from me when she's dropping the kids off at 3.

You are soooo right! :thumbsup2
How could I forget "coffee mugs"? They're usually #1 on my avoid list.

Last year, after purchasing Vera Bradley lunch totes for DDs' teachers, a note was sent home asking parents not to purchase Christmas gifts for them. They recommended donating a book to the library instead.

You might want to hold off a bit, or at least buy something you can regift or use yourself.

I give a GC to Borders. All of our teachers have small libraries in their classrooms for students to use.

Another teacher checking in! That is a great list - I'd add Starbucks or any other quick service lunch/dinner type places so the teacher can treat herself to lunch. I second the No Coffee Mug suggestion, and I would add No Cocoa/Tea to the list as well. Last Christmas, I ended up with 9 boxes of cocoa!

One year, I gave a "gift of food and service" to my son's teacher. She was a great teacher and I really appreciated all she had done to help my son so I gave her a wide variety of take-out menus and let her "place her order" for lunch each day for one school week. She loved it, and said she felt quite pampered.

I have to say, though, that the best gift I have ever gotten from a parent was a handwritten thank you not from a parent. It was beautiful and sincere, and it made me feel great. It's not an easy job by any stretch and it was great to know that that parent really appreciated my work and my relationship with her child.:goodvibes

Good luck!

Thank you for a great list! Now would you use the gift card to the places listed for yourself? That's what I'd like - not her spending it on something for the classroom if possible. :goodvibes

Agreed! I think giving something the person can/will use is a good idea in any case! :thumbsup2

I know a couple of the other moms through the PTO so that could be an option for the classroom as well.

Yeah - no coffee mugs. I'm with you there! I just want to make sure it's something for her that she can use on her. She deserves it!

That's a good idea. There's not much close to the school unfortunetly.

I don't plan on buying anything just yet and I'm fairly sure gifts are ok as I recall it being discussed here at work last year. Thanks though - hopefully that doesn't jynx me for this year! :rotfl:

That's a good idea! We don't have one close but do have a Barnes and Noble...

Good luck!

The first week of school I sent in a note because Mrs. J was wonderful despite the fact I cried through pretty much her entire "back to school" open house type event before school started, the first morning I dropped DS5 off (getting teary just sitting here thinking about it!). I never thought it would be this hard to send him off during the day while I'm at work none the less! We've always "chosen" who would be in his life and this was the first time someone else got to make that choice and it was hard but we love her and couldn't have picked anyone better!

Thank you all so much for your suggestions!!! So, as teachers, do you want a gift card to someplace just for you, a place you could get something for you or the classroom or just the classroom? I'm thinking for her but maybe for her or the classroom?? She does include a "wish list" in the weekly newsletter that comes home if they need something in particular and I always make sure to send that in on Monday (it comes home on Friday). I hate that teachers have to purchase their own supplies and things for their classrooms!

Also, thank you to all of the teachers for doing what you do! You're all amazing and will never hear "thank you" enough! Just know that there are parents like me who so appreciate what you do and just can't always communicate how much we appreciate you! :grouphug:

At the end of an exceptional year, I emailed the principal, and cc'd the teacher, on a letter, singing her praises.

I would give a gift card to an educational store. That way the teacher can restock her stickers, pencils, etc!!!

The teachers my dd have had so far really like gift cards to our local educational store - just down the street from our school.

I also add a litte of thier favorite treat (chocolate, candies, or what ever) they really seem very pleased with this.

As PTA president at DDs school I am always working with the teachers on ways to get thier classes involved in our activites. These gift cards to educational stores are a sure fire way to ensure the teachers support.

I figure if it works for PTA things, then I can use it as a parent too. LOL!!

I've gotten GC's to educational stores as well as places "just for me" and I must say I like the "just for me" ones better. It allows me to give myself a little guilt free treat. To me, buying supplies for the classroom is just part of the job that I have come to accept.:)

WHAT????! Do the teachers know they almost got Vera Bradley lunch totes? I would love anything Vera Bradley, and of course, gift cards are always appreciated.

While DD is now in high school and doesn't give teachers gifts anymore...I was just thinking this morning about the gift to her k-teacher and the 2 aides - DD and I stenciled sweatshirts in a winter scene...which was the way coolest (and cheapest) gift we ever did!

In a different year, we gave a male teacher a gift certificate for a local car wash. Mr. F LOVED it! Just thought I would toss in an idea for the guys who teach too!

Another vote for gift cards.. That way you will be sure that they get something that they really need or want..:thumbsup2

I copied this idea off someone on the Dis last year and both of my son's teachers loved the gift, I put all of the items in a nice basket. My son also enjoyed going with me and helping pick out the items. I also included a gc to the local coffee shop.

We all know that teachers tend to spend their own money to have extra school supplies for when kids run out of something. So something I have done is to give them a collection of school supplies ...with a twist. I attach a note to each item that says something like the following...

crayons - Thank you for coloring my world with new ideas.
sharpie - Thank you for giving me the "permanent" impression that learning is fun.
modeling clay - Thank you for being a great role "model".
eraser - Thank you for helping learn from my mistakes.
ruler - Thank you for guiding me along the straight and narrow.
Pencil shapener - Thank you for helping me keep my mind "sharp".
glue - Thank you for helping me hold it all together.
Starburst candies - Thank you for inspiring sudden "bursts" of inspiration.

Another teacher here:

I love gift cards too. Any amount is great, even $5. One of my favorites was a $5 Blockbuster card with a bag of popcorn and a Pepsi. popcorn::

I also had a student who gave me a great throw blanket last year. LOVED it! I use it every night on the couch.:happytv:
