Teacher fired for getting pregnant weeks before marriage

It's all about the institution's priorities. Instead of welcoming life, they are determined to PUNISH. That's the most important thing to them. That a baby needs a mother with an income....who cares? Not their problem.
And it's a totally bogus, made-up "crime." You can just choose to change your mind about it, and then nobody gets fired, and a new life is welcomed into the community.

You could say that the teacher didnt care too much as well, couldnt you? She knew the rules and what was expected of her but didnt care enough to be careful to insure she had employment to care for her child. You could say that her irresponsibility is not the problem of any institiution, couldnt you?

Its not about Punishment. This school seems to want to have a certain moral code to serve as an example to their students. You dont need to agree with it nor do you have to like it. But when she took the job she knew it , or at least Im guessing she knew it.

The school is protecting the environment they have set up and that other parents pay good money to be a part of. The "not caring" cannot be attached to the institution.

LOl, why is it their concern whether the mother has an income? I don't know about your job but mine is only concerned with me doing what I am supposed to do, when I am supposed to do it, and following company policy. It is my responsibility to make sure i comply so that I have an income.

LOL exactly!

She might be able to win due to HIPAA but I don't see wrongful termination here. They can fire at will unless she is a legally protected class and I don't see her situation falling under a protected class. It's a shame.

Of course, I'm no lawyer!

I think you are right. They could fire her....in a "right to work" state, they can fire anyone for pretty much any reason, or no reason. Doesn't make it right, or particularly Christian, but it is what it is.

But if they violated her HIPPA rights, then I they can be sued. That's what that statute is all about.

Should the administrators be fired for gossip? That is probably all the staff is talking about today.

They were probably talking about her as she was teaching, for her to be asked by the principal about her pregnancy date.

Oh, the hypocrisy.

I agree but think most likely there will be a settlement with regards to the disclosure. Unless she's a glory hunter, she will probably be thrilled to bank six figures off this school.
Again, you are not answering why you are so sure she will settle.

She already opted out of mediation, which could have led to a settlement.

Perhaps she is not a glory hunter, but wants to have a case that future lawyers can quote that proves that real federal and state privacy laws come before religious ideals.

And that Christian (or any religious) schools are not above the law just because they are religious schools.

Are you from Orlando? Do you know this woman personally? Are you a member of her legal team? We know you are not a member of the school.

I think you are secretly hoping she will settle and it will all go away.:goodvibes

LOL exactly!

Lol, really???? Fire the pregnant woman. Ha, ha, ha!

Where I come from, the big part of the mission of a church is to care for its flock. Tossing out a pregnant woman doesn't fit the mission.

Agree 100% with the christian school firing her. Her actions are 100% the opposite of what the school probably teaches is acceptable.

I disagree 100% with telling anyone why she was fired. It's really no ones business.

I think this is where I fall. While I DO NOT AGREE with the school's stance at all, I totally understand their decision. Of course, if they never made known this "no sex" rule, it will be harder for me to accept.

But telling the parents and faculty? Not acceptable at all.

Agree with both.

Not at all surprising they fired her for this reason.

And the takeaway from this is lie. Or have an abortion. Great message, church!

Why would you agree and accept a job when you didnt agree or had an issue with their policies? The fight should have been at the time of employment or during employment, dont you think? Im having trouble understanding people who know what is expected but completely disregard it and then sue because they just didnt agree with it...

I teach my kids that rules are rules, even if you don't like them. Fight to change them if you like, but don't just ignore them because you don't agree.

What flock is kicking her out? Drama much?

Because people need jobs? Especially in this economy?

Well, if she needed it so badly, why wasnt she more careful or responsible about keeping it?

So you purposely take a job knowing you are breaking the rules and then moan when you are fired?

I believe that the administrators participated in gossip when they announced her termination to the staff, and called the parents.

Isn't this also a sin, that should result in someone getting fired.

I feel bad for her, but there are consequences for actions that we take. Instead of accepting her mistake and moving forward, she is blaming others for their consequences. :sad2:

Then she will lose and get nothing. Have fun taking care of that kid without any money.

I know that's what I would do. In her shoes I wouldn't give a flying fig about how much money I would get, as long as it was enough to pay the lawyer. To me it would be more about 1) Sticking it to the school and 2) setting precedent so future employees don't have the same thing happen to them.

All of this is assuming there was no "morality clause" in her contract. But something tells me if there were, most lawyers wouldn't touch the case. And even if there was, there is still the issue of the school violating her privacy by stating why the fired her and her medical condition. The right move for the school would be at most to say "We fired her for breach of contract, but we cannot comment on specifics" or at best "We cannot comment on pending litigation".
