Teacher asking for Yankee candles/test.....Update Pg 12 #168

I'd definately call or email her to find out if she was kidding or serious. If she was serious, it's bribery - Yankee large jar candles cost what - around 25.00 - and I would get the principal/administration involved. There's something inherently wrong there.

I don't think I'd let my child handle that on their own.

I really hope she was kidding and her comment was just taken out of context.

I'm really puzzled by all of you who say you wouldn't let your child handle this. Really? A 15/16 year old isn't old enough to ask a teacher what she really meant and go to an advisor if necessary?

I'm just imagining my daughter - who is a 10th grader and who will be 16 in about 6 weeks - being involved in this situation and how incensed she would be if I interfered.

Different strokes for different folks, I guess...

Joining Candle Watch 2009...

I vote you send your son in with a New York Yankees candle. See what she does with *that*!

If she's serious... this one looks about right.

I am torn about this - I want him to be able to handle situations like this however he has a very non confrontational personality - he rather avoid conflict and take a 0. I do believe that I will need to talk to the teacher. I will be calm and see what she says. Emailing would probably be the best way to go forward on this so I will type something out to her this evening to ask for clarification and then take it from there.

I'm with you on this. It is extremely hard for adolescents to confront authorities, especially when that authority has the power to impose failure. Neither of my kids could have done that. Heck, I couldn't have done it either at that age.

First order of business is to talk directly to the teacher. Better yet, email so you have her answer in writing. If she indeed is selling grades for candles I would go directly to the principal--I think they would be very interested to know the details of that exchange.

Haven't read all of the posts just the first page but is there any chance she was kidding?:confused3

I've worked with many teachers who have a dry sense of humor or just a mischievious nature to them that they have suggested loads of things for a grade! Its like "Oh you missed Thursday, bring me a tray of your mom's cinnamon buns to get your grade." Never serious but the looks on the kids faces showed they would honestly think the teacher was serious.

Hoping the teacher was "pulling their leg" and not really wanting candles for grades

See, I would expect my 15 year old to ask a teacher about a missed assignment or clarify instructions on how to do a lab. Other things like asking for an extension on a due date or asking for another copy of a worksheet would also be things he should take care of.

But....if the teacher said this to the whole class and wrote it on the board, how exactly would the child approach it? Questioning whether requesting a candle for a grade is against school policy would be challenging the teacher. Many kids have trouble with confrontation, especially when it involves an authority figure. I think that's a lot to put on a child, even a 15 year old child.

candle watch 2009 lol :rotfl:

that is just crazy. im really hoping it was a miscommunication. but for some reason i dont think so.

OP I received a coupon (with an internet code) to buy one get one free. :lmao:, Okay I know you really won't be buying the candles, but I am here if you need to PM me.

I would NOT expect my child to confront a teacher about a blatant breach of ethics and policy.
And, heck yes, if this involves $25.00 of MY money.... it does involve me.

I WOULD however, contact her to find out her favorite scent. Comment how you are there to support your son's education and academic success... You are just so sorry that your son was absent with a serious illness... etc.... etc... ad-nauseum.

If she is ready to actually accept this 'bribe'....
Then I would be ALL OVER THAT.... cc: to the Principal, School Administration, etc..

Hhhhhmmmm, actually you might want to consider actually taking her the darned candle, so that the 'crime' has then been committed.
Until then, it is all just he-said-she-said.
Maybe you should take Tinkr up on her coupon!

LOL- Thanks for the offer but I did just order some Yankee Candles for christmas gifts this weekend with a buy two get two code.

If by chance this does happen to be a misunderstanding on my sons part maybe this teacher will get a candle for Christmas;)

Candle watch! Too funny.

:lmao::lmao::lmao:

I can't wait to find out what happens with this.

joining on to see happens.

i can see having older kids deal with stuff but sometimes a parent has to get involved.

case in point-dd was out of school for close to a week at the end of september. her school's policy is you call in and when you do you can make a request for the office to get the assignment/announcements for each class (they have an automated system they contact each teacher with)-the office emails and faxes the stuff by 5 p.m. each school day. dd's information technology teacher provided assignments each day which dd had done to turn in when she returned. we (dd/dh & i) were therefore very surprised to see that dd got an 'f' for not turning in an assignment (highschool has a parent portal where you can periodically check grades). it was'nt listed on the stuff the school had sent. i had dd talk to the teacher and take the emails. teacher said it was'nt missing from when she was out, it was missing from the day she came back-that part of their grade is based on 'managment skills' which includes getting a 're-admit' slip after being absent. dd asked teacher what that was-teacher said you get one from the office the day you come back. dd goes to office, and newer clerical person had no idea what she was talking about, tells teacher, teacher says she needs to wait to ask one of the more senior clerks but tells her it's already too late for her to get one and raise the grade. i ended up calling the school because i could'nt find anything in the handbook about it, and when i had called in the absences i was told that by virtue of calling them in she did'nt have to go to the office to show a note or do anything other than just return to classes, so i wanted to know if i had been misinformed and had misinformed dd. upshot-the 're-admit slips' were something they had done in previous years but had discontinued this year. teacher apparantly did'nt read the memo on it and had been giving all the students who had been absent 'f's' all quarter:mad::mad:

not only did dd get her grades straightened out but the teacher had to go back and ammend the grades for all those kids-in this case i definatly was glad i got involved.

All I can say is WOW. :scared1:
I'm an aussie and 'down under' our students do work for grades but perhaps we are behind in all the latest educational research.
If we could 'candle' our way to straight A's I would have done much better when I was at school.:rotfl:

Hope you get the matter resolved ASAP popcorn::

I have an update this morning. I will say that this teacher did promptly answer my email first thing this morning.

In her reply she stated that my son did receive the group grade for their presentation and the candle thing is not for this project BUT it is a over all extra credit opportunity for the whole class if they want the extra credit. So for extra credit she is offereing this....

Extra Credit - bring in by Nov 2nd

1 large yankee candle = 2 test grades
1 med Yankee candle = 1 test grade
1 small Yankee candle = removal of lowest grade

I am just stunned that she thinks it is ok to offer extra credit test grades for candles. I haven't replied to her yet but I will be calling the principal to make him aware of what is going on in this class room. I asked my son again and he still says that she told the class that anyone absent on friday needed to do this if they wanted to make their grade up.

As a teacher, I just have to say this is WRONG, WRONG, WRONG! :sad2:

OK call it anything u want thats bribery!!! Ur buying a grade not earning it! I think you should somehow let the principal know.
