Hey all,
I've seen the same question pop up a few times, and I had it myself, so decided to phone Dollar to find out the answer.
If you've booked your car hire via Travel City Direct (either alone or part of a package, etc) and your insurance includes Loss Damage Waiver (LDW), you will not be required to have a hold placed on your credit card for a security deposit, unless you book extra items either beforehand or one-site such as child seats or satnav, as these are classed as 'removable' items and a deposit would still be required.
This means those without credit cards / not enough credit to stand a few hundred bucks hold do not have to worry
For upgrading on-site, naturally you can pay by cash or card at the beginning of your trip.
