The main drawback is timing the pick up using an app.
Maybe I am old school, but after grabbing my bags, just walking to the Taxi Stand, I don't have to deal with the app and then wait, just get in a taxi and I am on my way
Also, I really don't like how Uber/Lyft deals with their drivers for multiple reasons, but safety is a key one. A taxi driver has to get a commercial DL, a special permit, has a security and background check when applying, and then on a regular basis as they continue to work. Also the vehicles are regularly inspected.
And being a tax accountant, I know the abuses the drivers have to go through to get paid, and then deal with their expenses. Many follow the rules, and end up with a complicated tax situation, but some cheat the system in avoiding to pay taxes, or claim expenses they don't have or don't qualify for.
So I tend to not use Uber/Lyft, I tend to opt for a taxi, or arrange a private town car in advance. There is still something to say about a well dressed driver coming with their "sign board" at the airport to help with your luggage, and the prices have gone down due to the competition with Uber/Lyft.
I do end up on a lot of private van services though, as when I am working a Media event with a camera crew, we need the size and extra space for the camera and equipment needed. But still, nice to deal with, and once again, a commercial license. The fun part of travelling with the crew is all the pain in the butt things we have to go through with checking in luggage (oversized sometimes, and security issues and extra inspections), but also, the airlines tend to assign a staff member to specifically deal with us.... and TSA, depending on the airport and their mood, will take us aside and deal with us separate from the main queue. This isn't always better, but I think the folks I work with regularly all have TSA Pre-Check credentials, it is just they know we will take a little extra time, but also know the rules, and how to open up the cases, and show them what they want to see. A recent shoot, I had a "b list celebrity" I was using for the shoot, and the celebrity actually asked the TSA agent for an autograph, since they were so easy to work with. That got a good laugh from everyone, but she told me on the plane, that was the easiest airport screening ever, and could she travel with us more often. (it didn't hurt we were using Long Beach, as they have a new modern TSA screening area and system, and used to dealing with film crews.)
