Needed a taxi leaving DTD. car with taxi sign on top pulled up and said "taxi?" We said yes and got in. Realized on our 1.9 mile drive no meter. When we arrived at designation he said $20. One of us argued that it was only $9 to get to DTD. He said he was a towncar. She said she would give him $11 cause that was the cost to get to DTD and take it or leave it. He took it and called her a b*****. Luckily we were in a well lite area with a concierge person. We learned a lesson. Next time we ask rate for designation and look for a meter.

Next time take only brand name taxis. Checker and Yellow are the WDW official taxis.

Taxi sign on top? Said he was a towncar? Thats a contradiction that ios a tipoff of something fishy.

1) You got hit by a Gypsy.
2) Town Cars are not allowed to solicit or pickup "on the street".
3) Town Cars and Limos must be summoned for a pickup at WDW.
4) Any car-van-bus company can drop off passengers.
5) But, for pickups, they must be summoned, unless they are MEARS.
6) MEARS has the exclusive WDW contract to pickup "on the street".

NOTE: "On-the-Street" denotes cab-limo-bus that is hailed or
that troll for customers. NEVER get into a cab you did not order
and that does not have a meter. Most limo companies do not use
meters, but you know the tariff (fee) before you get into the cab,
or they tell you ahead of time. If you use an unmetered car and
he says the fare is $400 from DTD to the hotel, you musy pay that
fare. Limo services are not governed by the local taxi rates.

you do realize that is racist? as is the phrase "he "gypped" me out of that.
a person's ethnicicity has nothing to do with their perponderance to cheating someone.

According to various dictionary definitions the term "gypsy" refers to an unlicensed or rogue business. Rusty used the term correctly in this instance.

A gypsy cab is a cab that, basically, wanders around, looking for business. The same way gypsies wandered around the country side. There is nothing racist in that comment at all.
Gypped? Sure, that could be construed as racist.

even though the term has been commonly used doesn't make it ok. to use the name of a race of people to refer to cheating behavior is racist, IMO.

would you call someone an Indian giver? do you go to a garage sale and "jew someone down"? all used to be common terms, but now we know they are racist.

just stating my opinion. Gypsy people are offended by such references.

I am an Indian Jew raised by Gypsies and I have no issues with any of that. ;)

Really though, words evolve through the years away from there original intent. A gypsy taxi is a perfect example of such evolution. So tired of the PC policing of the world.

Wow - I learn something new every day !
Who Knew? I had no idea that "Gypsy" was considered a "race".
Well ...... Now I know something new.

They're not a race, they're an ethnic group.

The term "gypsy cab" is not offensive; it refers to the nomadic connotation, rather than the dishonest one.

. . . just stating my opinion. Gypsy people are offended by such references.

1) I wopuldn't think so.
2) It is an accepted description of rouge taxis.
3) I have checked, and others think it is fine, like
. . . some of the Redskin football players
. . . three waiters I have asked
. . . a few of the Cleveland Indians infield players
. . . couple of handicapped folks
. . . one stewardess I know
4) But, to make sure I am Politically Correct, I offer the below . . .

**********************************************************

'Twas the night before Christmas and Santa's a wreck...
How to live in a world that's politically correct?
His workers no longer would answer to "Elves".
"Vertically Challenged" they were calling themselves.
And labor conditions at the north pole
Were alleged by the union to stifle the soul.

Four reindeer had vanished, without much propriety,
Released to the wilds by the Humane Society.
And equal employment had made it quite clear
That Santa had better not use just reindeer.

So Dancer and Donner, Comet and Cupid,
Were replaced with 4 pigs, and you know that looked stupid!

The runners had been removed from his sleigh;
The ruts were termed dangerous by the E.P.A.
And people had started to call for the cops
When they heard sled noises on their roof-tops.

Second-hand smoke from his pipe had his workers quite frightened.
His fur trimmed red suit was called "Unenlightened."

And to show you the strangeness of life's ebbs and flows,
Rudolf was suing over unauthorized use of his nose
And had gone on Geraldo, in front of the nation,
Demanding millions in over-due compensation.

So, half of the reindeer were gone; and his wife,
Who suddenly said she'd enough of this life,
Joined a self-help group, packed, and left in a whiz,
Demanding from now on her title was Ms.

And as for the gifts, why, he'd ne'er had a notion
That making a choice could cause so much commotion.
Nothing of leather, nothing of fur,
Which meant nothing for him. And nothing for her.

Nothing that might be construed to pollute.
Nothing to aim. Nothing to shoot.
Nothing that clamored or made lots of noise.
Nothing for just girls. Or just for the boys.

Nothing that claimed to be gender specific.
Nothing that's warlike or non-pacific.

No candy or sweets...they were bad for the tooth.
Nothing that seemed to embellish a truth.
And fairy tales, while not yet forbidden,
Were like Ken and Barbie, better off hidden.

For they raised the hackles of those psychological
Who claimed the only good gift was one ecological.

No baseball, no football...someone could get hurt;
Besides, playing sports exposed kids to dirt.
Dolls were said to be sexist, and should be passe;
And Nintendo would rot your entire brain away.

So Santa just stood there, disheveled, perplexed;
He just could not figure out what to do next.

He tried to be merry, tried to be gay,
you've got to be careful with that word today.
His sack was quite empty, limp to the ground;
Nothing fully acceptable was to be found.

Something special was needed, a gift that he might
Give to all without angering the left or the right.
A gift that would satisfy, with no indecision,
Each group of people, every religion;

Every ethnicity, every hue,
Everyone, everywhere...even you.
So here is that gift, it's price beyond worth...
"May you and your loved ones enjoy peace on earth."

Enough guys. Take the discussion to the Community Board if you insist on this line of discussion.

Wow. This went nowhere fast, didn't it. Never take sketchy cabs. Always look for medallions and ask if they aren't there.

No comment on the rest of the utter nonsense getting posted here. Good to know how some folks think though.

If you want to read some really heated taxi threads try the Trip Advisor Las Vegas message boards. These Disney boards are G rated compared to Trip Advisor.

OP, that can happen anywhere. It happened to us in Amsterdam. The cabbie just took off and when we asked him to drop his flag he swore at us and kicked us out. We also had a cab try that in Chicago and we simply refused to get into it.

I asked that that line of discussion stop. If it comes up again, points will be applied.

I've heard points mentioned before...I try to always behave myself, but could you explain the point system or link to somewhere here that talks about it? I'm curious about how it works.

Sorry about your experience. We had a bad taxi experience in August. We took a taxi to DTD from our resort, CR. The driver took the long way there by the Polynesian resort instead of going straight (there was no traffic). The fee was $24.00 (plus tip). The driver from DTD to CR took the direct route and the fee was $19.00 (plus tip). We didn't say anything to the first driver except I did comment that this is taking an awfully long time.
