we'll be staying offsite next trip (about 7 miles from WDW) and won't have car.

Does anyone know if there are cabs from MK and /or epcot and how I could reserve? thanks!

Yes, you can absolutely take taxis throughout the area. Depending on the off site hotel you are staying at, they might be able to make arrangements for you. If you prefer doing it on your own, Mears (which is a name you might see around this board for taking airport transfers) operates taxis as well, and you can estimate fares and book on their website.

Also, many off site hotels have courtesy shuttles. You might want to contact your hotel to inquire.

Finally, there is a bus system called Lynx which offers extensive routes around the Orlando/LBV area.

From MK you can either go (monorail or ferry) to the TTC to get a taxi there, or walk over to the Contemporary. There are always taxicabs waiting.

For Epcot just go over to the bus lot. There are always taxis there.

Also, seven miles from WDW can easily translate to 15 miles to a Park. Current taxi fare in the Orlando area is $2.20 for the first 1/4 mile and then 55¢ for each additional 1/4 mile (or 80 seconds of waiting time). In addition, there is a $0.50 surcharge on all rides (except the surcharge is $1.00 to or from the airport).

I have seen a recent report that this is the 5th highest taxi fare in the country.

7 miles from property line is totally different than 7 miles from the Magic Kingdom.

On a cab ride I took two years ago, was 6 miles, and nearly $20. I know there are no resorts that close to the Magic Kingdom outside the property.

I would really rethink your idea on a taxi ride, unless you have money to spend. The Lynx bus system is quite nice and there's a pick up at the Ticket and Transportation Center (TTC). As long as your hotel is along Palm Pkwy or 192.

Yes I know, it'll be expensive since the W is so vast. May be cheaper to rent car for the day. ?

That might be a good idea if you can get a good rate. last time I stayed off site without a car was in '97. We relied mainly on the hotel shuttle (we were on I Drive not far from Universal) but there were a couple of nights where we stayed at the parks past our shuttle time to watch the fireworks. Finding a taxi was easy, but the cost was around $30 including tip each time we used them.

Keep an eye out for any discounts. Sometimes there's some pretty good ones available. Don't just check your hotel/airport. There's tons of rentals at various hotels in the area. My aunt rented a car last summer for about $40 for the day through hotwire I believe. I was driving her around Orlando, but she wanted to visit my sister in South Florida, so she rented a car from a hotel maybe a couple blocks from the one she was staying at.

Most hotel shuttles run after park opening and prior to park closing. Maybe a trip in the middle of the day. Other than that, you're stuck with finding your own transportation if you want to hit the parks at opening or stay to watch the night time shows.

We've always rented a car when staying offsite. We usually can find a rental for under $200 for a week. It's nice to be able to operate on your own schedule instead of relying on buses/taxis/shuttles, too.

I would plan on spending around $100 per day on cab rides. You can almost certainly rent a car for less, even with parking fees.

Budget does discounts on their rentals quite frequently. We rented a car from them in 2010 and it was $25/day. We expected a super cheapy car, but they upgraded us for free to a really nice Prius. :cool1: I would definitely rent with them again. We were using it for a short Disney stay prior to a cruise, but if I were staying off site, I would definitely rent a car instead of dealing with taxi's to and from. If it's $30 for a taxi TO the park and $30 for a taxi BACK from the park, that's already more than a car rental. Also, if you have your own car, you can do other money saving things like eat off site where it will cost less... buy some groceries for your room.... etc. If you have little ones, you can also go back to your room for a nap if need be. At any rate, rental car seems to be the way to go for me.
