Taxi from DLH to Farmer's Market?

You can get larger UBER cars. If you rent, you can use a car pool lane to reduce traffic and use WAZE to determine the most effective route to get there with live traffic updates and route adjustments. Did the UBER rate include anytime at the market? otherwise it may be 2 45 dollar rides.

Yes, LA traffic can be bad but if you plan it correctly, it may not be as bad as you think. Looking at Google Maps, the drive right now is about 1:15 if you head south to the 405 and then north. If you take 5 N, it's an 1:30 with more risk of bad traffic. Bus and light rail is ONLY 3:00 hours...LOL.

Waze says it's only an hour on 110 with car pool (HOT, High Occupancy) or paying the toll (EzPass Only). This is at 9:50 AM on a Tuesday. It could be longer during rush hours.
Since the Uber X rate was to compare with the 1 way taxi fare I assume it was also 1 way. I don't see a way in the app to request an Uber X for more than 4 passengers. Their instructions for drivers are only 4 as well. I'm sure you can do it with Uber Black, but isn't that the same as finding a car service?

As far as the 110 HOT lanes I'd advise anyone thinking of using them to research what they'll need. You need a FasTrak transponder that is accurately set to the number of passengers. If you use the ones without a switch that work in Nor Cal you'll be charged per mile. If you use the lanes without a registered transponder you'll receive a violation.

The Uber rate I quoted is one way, only.

I only ever use Uber X, so that's all I bothered getting an estimate for. Sometimes you'll get a driver in a van or suv that can accommodate more than four people, but there's no way to request that and it's not super common, from my experience.

Uber Black will accommodate more people, but the rate is higher. I didn't check it, though. If I ever get my lazy butt up to go locate my phone, I'll check it and post the rate.

Okay- lazy me found my phone.

I was incorrect- Uber Black isn't the correct option, as that doesn't give more seating capacity. Uber XL is the cheapest option for seating up to six people and is the low-cost SUV option (not to be confused with Uber SUV which is ridiculously expensive).
Uber XL (seating up to six people) estimate from DLH to Farmers Market, one way, is $75-$100.

+1

Not even the worst traffic in the country. I've lived in the L.A. area and D.C. area and the D.C./NoVa traffic is FAR worse than L.A. I tell people that, I show them the stats, but they all just want to believe the stereotype on L.A. traffic. I'm told Chicago is far worse as well.

And, unlike driving through Manhattan or so, unspoken "rules of the road" in L.A. really is the same as driving in 90% of the country (except the "L.A. Left Turn" for the first few seconds after a light turns red).

L.A. is a city built on car culture, driving around familiarizing oneself to it by car is an experience unto itself. But everyone skips ahead to Hollywood...which is sort of like ignoring the whole Louvre to see the Mona Lisa...except in this case the Mona Lisa is a clown painting. On a tangent, I was living in Paris maybe 12 years ago and watched the tourists walk 1/3 of the Louvre without looking at anything just to see the Mona Lisa and walk back again...the funny thing was...the Mona Lisa was a reproduction at the time, the real one was in restoration, neither the Louvre nor I had the heart to tell them.

Thanks so much for this. I've been getting rather nervous at the thought of dealing with LA traffic. We live in a small city and hate dealing with traffic in our closest big city already. I imagine LA is worse. That said, we've survived driving in all kinds of places, so I'm sure we'll manage.

Note to self - stay out of the HOT lanes! We will have a rental car so I'm sure we will not have a transponder.

The traffic is bad because it's heavy. The drivers and rules really aren't that different than anywhere else. Everyone know everyone else sits in it too and just seem to "accept" it.

Oh...and "lane sharing" is legal for motorcycles in California (with restrictions...that no one follows). Don't freak out and don't be mad when a M/C splits between you and the car beside you, and watch out for M/C's when changing lanes. It sounds scarier than it is; long part of Ca. culture, M/C and cars cohabitant relative well with the arrangement.

They are pretty well marked, they are carpool/HOV lanes that were re-purposed for toll lanes. Rental companies are more than happy to loan you a transponder at a huge mark-up. Do take advantage of existing carpool lanes on roads that have them if there are 2 or more of you. Only enter are designed points...last I looked, the fine for crossing the double-lines was $1300 (four times the fine for being a single driver in the carpool lanes).

Good to know there is a difference between HOT lanes and HOV lanes. We have our family of 4 and will definitely take advantage of the free HOV lanes :)

The Car pool or HOV lanes are marked as the number of people required to be a car pool. It is normally either 2 or 3 people. If you meet the requirement, you do NOT need a transponder. It looks like two 10 and 110 freeways have HOT lanes which require the newer switched FastPass if you are looking for free car pool.

In L.A., they call them "carpool lanes," many never heard the term "HOV" and get confused by it.

Interstates are called "freeways," but they understand both terms.

I hate to hijack too, but would uber be the cheapest for one person to get to the farmer's market? I am so happy to learn of these awesome tours, I think my husband might like a disney break...I could send him to do that! I just don't know how, and how much it would cost to get him to/from there.....

Thanks OP for the great idea!

There are tours that depart from Anaheim so theres's no need to send him all the way to the Farmer's Market. OP wants a particular tour but if you just want something to occupy DH's time you can send him on any one of them.

There are Starline tours that leave from Anaheim. One includes a hop on hop off bus with a stop at Farmer's Market.

Starline looks good. I was looking at the Melting Pot Food tours and it's a 2-3hr walking tour that looks really fantastic. That hop on/hop off doesn't look like something he'd like, although it looks good to me. I will keep looking around-and will keep starline in mind. You never know, he may surprise me. I should open up another thread for appeasing spouses who don't have as much disney spirit...

While the Farmer's market in LA is famous, It would seem to me that there are many other attractions of similar ilk much closer. If it were convenient, I could see going there but if its going to require 3 hours of driving and a huge taxi fare, I would find a more local attraction.

As for the HOV/HOT/Carpool I have seen all kinds of signs but all have the Diamond on them and the number of people required

Freeway Entrances may also have a diamond or carpool lane that allow you to enter the freeway faster and frequently without needing to stop for the metering light.

I just want to point out -- fame isn't what makes Farmers Market special. It's a historical part of L.A. and its culture. People in L.A. have a great soft spot for it, as many of us do for Disneyland. There is a fantastic blend of both old, family-run, small businesses in the market and newer, larger places. There is an incredible variety of food (all sorts of cuisines), and because a lot of it is prepared by those mom & pop businesses that have been at the Market for decades, it is quality food, made with care. Some of the people who worked at the Market as kids now own or run certain businesses there. They love it. Those of us who have spent a lot of time there love it too!

I just did a whole focus group about the Farmers Market a couple of weeks ago, with other folks who live in the general area and go there a lot, and everyone was saying how much they love it and how they have to remind people that it is different from just any farmers market. It's a whole experience on its own. One lady said that it feels to her like a bit of a vacation in the middle of the city.

Add in the fact that it's next door to The Grove, and celebrities frequent The Grove, and the whole property is an afternoon of fun. It doesn't take 3 hours of driving to and from Anaheim at certain times. At the right time of the morning or evening, it takes 40-45 minutes each way. Most people drive during the busier times of day, though, so that's why they run into so much traffic.

Now whether or not it's worth leaving Disneyland just to drive up to the Farmers Market alone is up to the individual travelers, but it is certainly worth a visit if L.A. is already a planned stop on the trip.

I would agree with you Sherry that it might be a great place to visit if you have the transportation required to get there. Based on this conversation, I have considered adding it as a stop on my drive as we are driving down from Sacramento and will have the flexibility to stop on either our way down or even on Sunday on the way back north.

Traffic in LA has improved, to some extent, in the past few years but driving in LA, like most larger urban areas in the US, requires a much more "assertive" style of driving that could be considered aggressive. Here in Sacramento, it tends to range from the typical easy going style to a more assertive style depnding on the number of SF Bay Area drivers in town (as evidenced by the dealer plate rings). When I drive to my parents, I need to adjust my style as I get closer. In LA, when you hope off a plane, it can quite the culture shock.

I would just rent a car and call it a day. It may be hard to find an uber driver each way who wants to go that far. Plus the cost associated.

I also am local and live close to the Farmer's Market. I enjoy going there most of all now for Sticker Planet store. I do have memories of going as a kid and my Grandma went all the time to meet her friends. At one time I had an elderly friend who long ago had worked at DuPars was fun to here her pie tales. It's a fun place to check out and experience. I haven't been inside in quite a while but there is a Kip's Toyland that I believe at one time sold some classic toys. Tons of touristy shops to browse also. The Grove, honestly, I could do without because it is more of a fancier shopping area than the quainter FM. There is a beautiful Christmas tree up in December and for any book lovers a Barnes and Noble in the Grove. Definitely as Sherry said, a great variety! That said, and remember I am local and a huge DL fan, I would take Disneyland any day! :)

Wait, I thought the OP was just trying to get to the Farmers Market to catch a specific Hollywood tour which leaves from there, not visit the Farmers Market itself?
