My DH was laid off from a company last year on January 3. He worked a day and a half and was laid off. The company subsequently shut down a couple months later. My DH did provide his old manager with our current address when we moved but we have had no contact from the owner and would have no idea how to find him or my DH's old manager either at this point since the company no longer exists.

Anyway, I know that today is the deadline to mail the W-2s but I am not holding my breath on this place. (Yes, I know technically they HAVE TO send them but you know, the company is gone, who knows what this guy will do) So, if they don't send it to us, what do we do? We have a fairly good idea of what he made since it was only about 12 hours of work over those couple days but I don't know if we are just supposed to estimate what we think it was or what?

TIA.

The IRS has a form to be used when employer's don't furnish the W2's, that should be attached to your tax return. The IRS form is 4852. Most states also have a form to be used as a substitute wage statement when the employer doesn't furnish it. You should be able to find it for your state by doing a search for "substitute wage statement" on your state department's website.

I don't know if you file online or not, but when I did mine with Turbo Tax, I believe that was actually one of the questions they asked (about having wages with somebody who didn't provide a W-2). I'm guessing you put in the info, and they generate the form for you.

You're right about Turbo Tax. For those of you that do your own taxes, don't forget to go to the IRS and your state website to look for free electronic filing options! That's the fastest way to get your refund if you have one coming, and for me, that means I get to plan my next Disney trip! :cool1:

I didn't get my W-2 by January 31, so I asked my employer for it, but I still don't have it. What should I do?

If you don't receive your Form W-2 (PDF) by February 15, contact the IRS for assistance at (800) 829-1040. Also, you may want to refer to Tax Topic 154, Form W-2 - What To Do if Not Received, to see the specific information the IRS will need in order to prepare Form 4852 (PDF), Substitute For Form W-2, Wage and Tax Statement, or Form 1099R, Distributions from Pensions, Annuities, Retirement or Profit-Sharing Plans, IRAs, Insurance Contracts, etc.
