did the tax rate increase on hotels since May 2016?
I just double checked my reservation starting tomorrow and it is $75 higher in taxes than when I had originally booked.

quick calculation shows about 25% tax on my reservation
my base room rate remained the same - odd????

I just checked our upcoming reservation and it's just over 18%. The email says this:
  • The City of Anaheim levies a 17% tax on your room rate and a small energy fee of $2.34 per night will apply due to the increased energy costs in Southern California.
Any chance the hotel you are staying at also charges a daily resort fee on top of the tax?

no resort fee - we've stayed here before and no resort fees are charged
I'll give them a call to find out

It depends on the city, and in some cities, which part of the city you are staying at.

Buena Park just added 2% to its "resort" area Hotels, now 14%

Garden Grove charges 14.5%

The city of Orange charges 10%

Anaheim is 17% in the Anaheim Resort and Platinum Triangle areas, and 15% in the rest of the city. And this has been the rate since 2010.

And of course, individual hotels can add fees and charges, popular ones include a Resort Fee, an Energy Surcharge, parking fees, Wi-Fi fees and some "extended Stay Hotels" add a fee for daily cleaning (as compared to twice weekly).

I just stayed at GCH last weekend, tax was 17% -- no resort fee or other charges.
15% is listed on the bill as "tax", 2% as "ATID assessment"
These taxes have not changed for several years.

I just though about parking too. Although, that should be listed separate and not under taxes. We've stayed at Best Western Park Place Inn for years and the last time we stayed they started charging for parking. Never paid for parking there before.

standard 17% and 2% apply, it seems to be a glitch on the hotel website
we are staying at BW Stovall without a car and they dont' charge resort fees.

Agree with Nonsuch. The tax is 17% for the area immediately around the DLR.

No wonder Anaheim gave Disneyland a pass on taxes for tickets. They more than make up for it in hotel taxes. The last time I went to WDW, the tax was something like 11.5%....maybe 12%. I thought that was a lot. But I dont' anymore. Just looked at my HoJo confirmation and sure enough, it's 17%. That's more than my income tax bracket! Glad I don't have to pay for parking at least.

Did you book direct or go thru a site like expedia. The online sites add tax and fees, but what they do not tell you is they add fees that aren't required fees, in other words they put in fees for themselves and pretend its a city tax

One reason why I like booking direct with most Hotels/Motels. They usually will guarantee the lowest internet rate (besides blind bidding) and you can collect the Frequent Stay points from the chain.

You also tend to get better rooms on average, as they recognize you as a regular customer, instead of a one off from a third party.

This weekend, my points for Choice Hotels will give me the Presidential Suite in the Santa Clarita Area for the same price as a basic room. Not a bad deal at all, includes an in-room multi-person Hottub!

I've been booking CA hotels too long. When I saw the Orlando tax rate for the first time I felt like I was getting a discount. I was flabbergasted they leave so much tax money on the table- not that I'm complaining!
