Tart Burners??

I read about these tart burners from Yankee Candle on the DIS boards and decided to go get one --- well, a few weeks later, the candle in the bottom burned out, there's ash/soot all over the inside of the burner and excess wax left on the bottom. Was I supposed to put something under the tea light? I can't figure out how to efficiently wash the inside, since i can't fit my whole hand in, or get the extra wax out - do i just have to scrub really hard??

Also, how long do the frangrance things that burn on the top usually last? I had mine going for a long time and I don't really notice a difference in size -- just wondering when i can change scents!

TIA - I am a loser to make this so complicated lol.

Did the wax spill out of the tea light? I've never had that happen before. What type of tea light are you using?

I don't think the waxy portion of the tart actually diminishes very much, but it does lose it's scent. You can change the tart whenever you want, I usually only burn my two or three times before I change. I put my tart burner in the freezer for about 10 minutes, the wax pops right out after that. That would probably work for the excess wax in the bottom of your burner too. Not sure what to do about the soot though, I've never noticed that in any of my burners.

I love my tart burner but I have an electrical one... just plugs in. I burn the tarts 3-4 times before changing out.

I have never had this happen to my tart burners either ( I have a few from Yankee and burn tarts all the time). I have used the tea lights from Yankee and also generic ones from Stop & Shop and haven't had a problem with either. I would bring it back to Yankee, explain what is happening, and maybe they would give you another one??? I don't think this should be happening.
I also freeze mine so they pop right out. I think in Yankee it says that the scent only lasts 4-8 hours, but it still looks like the same amount of tart in there.

That's a really good idea to freeze them! Thanks, i'll try that. Should I be using the tea lights with the metal around them to contain it better? I was just using the like 2 in by 1 in ones, but it was a generic brand, so I'm not sure if that caused them to burn faster, thus the waxy mess on the inside?

The metal is what contains it, are you saying you did not use the metal around the tea light

lol yea i didn't....guess that solves one problem then. won't be using those ones without the metal anymore! The woman in Linens & Things where I got the burner didn't mention that, and probably thought i was smart enough to figure it out myself.

I think what you are saying you used is a votive candle. A tea light is the small round candle surrounded by metal. If you did use a votive that is where the soot came from as well, they are too tall for the tart burners and therefore the flame would have left black marks on the burner.
