Target stores are the absolute WORST...

All they have to do is close down all but 1 or 2 registers, and have the employees assigned to those registers be non-parents or non-students who don't have to do homework or get to sleep early. Those who stay get paid for their time.

Another thing to remember is just because their store closes at 10, doesn't mean everyone goes home at 10. There is still cleaning, straightening (which they start before close anyways) and money counting to be done. It doesn't inconvenience them much to have people finishing up their shopping 10 mins later.

And I am pretty sure the Target employees who want to leave right at 10pm are not leaving to pick up kids at child care.

I have to ask, what was so pressing that you couldn't get to the store earlier or wait until the following day to buy. BTW, the scenerio you described is an elitist mentality. What's the big deal?, why couldn't 1 person wait to serve me?, It's not like they go home at closing anyway? and on and on and on.

Then why are you upset? :confused3

Because they don't need to pressure customers. There are a lot of stores who don't pressure at closing time. Target just isn't one of them.

I forgot to mention the tactic (and flatout lie) that "our registers shut down automatically" at xx-o'clock. I've heard that one a couple times too.

Sounds like you do this a lot!

Sometimes I don't get finished with work until 9pm, even 9:30 sometimes. So I very frequently do my shopping around that hour and would rather not resort to 24 hour Walmarts.

I guess my problem is I am comparing Target to Publix, which is not fair because Publix goes above and beyond in this regard.

Whether Publix is more accomodating than Target isn't really the point. If you can't get to a store and finish shopping by closing time then you need to find another store.

I guess the registers should shut down to prevent lallygaggers like you!! You would certainly hurry up if they really did, wouldn't you? If you are still shopping after closing hour it becomes more of a security issue for the store, clearly an easy time to quickly shoplift an item or two, since no one is still watching ???? Even better, what would happen if you got locked in the building overnight? Sounds ridiculous but clearly these are all factors in hovering employees encouraging shoppers out of the store after closing hour.

What I do find offensive is when you are in a restaurant late at night (still before closing time) and the employees start cleaning and vacuuming. I actually worked in a place like that when I was in HS & college. I don't care how un busy a restaurant is, there is no reason to haul out the cleaning supplies before the customers are out (especially the ammonia kind of cleansers or the loud vacuums).

Or adjust your schedule or shop when you can finish before the store closes.

I think you made the perfect suggestion. :thumbsup2 Maybe I should revisit the Walmart idea afterall.

It's a shame that after all these posts the OP STILLS thinks she is right.
You need to have a reality check. The world doesn't revovle around JUST you.

With your attitude Target is better off without you.

I work at Target, and I don't think any of our people are that pushy. I am a cashier though, so I guess I don't know how the sales floor people are around closing. I have closed though and really, it's nice when people are lining up and getting ready to leave. I still have to stick around for another hour after all the customers are out of the store, so the faster the people leave the faster I can get home and go to sleep because by then I am pretty tired. Also, I wake up at 6:30AM to go to school and that's hard for me because I LOVE to sleep. haha.

What time do you go into work? Why not shop in the morning when they are first open?

And why should Target have to tell the employees without kids, you have to stay here past closing time for the customers who don't want to leave?

Sorry, you are the one who is rude, not Target.

This whole thread is a joke - right? :confused3

I don't believe that someone is actually arguing the point that a store closes at the stated closing time and is "rude" for sweeping the areas to herd people out who don't seem to care what time the store closes..

I worked retail one time during the Christmas season (waaay back before the extended or 24-hr. Christmas hours) and the closing time was 10 p.m.. Starting at 9:30 p.m., they would begin to make the appropriate announcements as to how much longer the store would be open for shopping.. Each department was assigned one person to do the "sweep" at 10 p.m.. We would check our department and then have to yell "CLEAR" all the way up to the front of the store to let them know there were no lingering shoppers.. Once they were sure all of the shoppers had left, they would lock the doors and we would go on to quickly finish up whatever other duties we had..

I think the one thing that the OP is overlooking here is that when you work retail, you are standing on your feet for 8 or more hours and by the time your shift is over, an extra 10 minutes can seem like an extra 10 HOURS...

The OP was rude - not the employees..

Didn't Oprah go through something like this where she wanted to shop but the store wouldn't let her in because they were closing? She went on her talk show and then got a public apology. Helps to be famous maybe? :confused3

It's a shame that after all these years, you still think I am a female. I guess I need to post here more often. Just so people at least know my gender lol.

Well then why don't you go shopping before you go to work..........Target opens at 8am and unless you work 12 hour days you should be going to work around 1pm, and if you do work 12 hour days you should have days off to complete your shopping, it is very inconsiderate of you to think people should have to put in time when their job is done and they want to go home, I guess most of us have consideration for the "poor joe" that wants to get home. I treat people the way that I want to be treated, no one likes to work later than they have to.

you catn count registers with customers in the store its an lp and safety issues and i have been a sm on retail for over 9 years
no company wants you doing this

I agree 100% especially as someone who worked in retail all her life.

I was trying to be sarcastic. I will never get this feeling of entitlement that some people seem to have, as if the rules that the rest of us have to follow somehow don't apply to them?!! :confused3
