Target Red Card for Canadians?

I've read on the Budget Board that Target sells Disney gift cards, and their Red Card holders save 5% on the cost of the cards. I'd love to buy gift cards to cover some of our incidental expenses, and if I can save some money in the process, that would be great!

I read on another forum that Canadians can get a Red Card without a US Social Security Number by presenting another credit card and their driver's licence. When I tried at a Target in MI over the summer, I was told that I would need to give my Social Insurance Number. I didn't feel comfortable giving out that number to a customer service rep in the store, so I didn't get the card.

We're planning another trip to the US before our trip to WDW in December, and I'm wondering if I should try again. Has anyone here successfully got a Target Red Card. If so, did you have to give your SIN, or how did you get around the request for a SSN?

I have a red card and have had one for years -however, I have a social security number as well. I did just get another U.S. credit card and gave my social insurance number with out difficulty. You do save the 5% at Target when you use the card.

Now that Target is coming to Canada it makes me wonder if we'll be able to get the red card here? It would be nice if we could. The Zellers in our local mall is being replaced with a Target in the new year.

I too have a Target card, and when I last spoke to credit services, they told me that they are working on what type of card to offer us Canadians. There are many of us who will shop in both US and Canada, so they are trying to determine what the best course of action is for Canadian Target customers.

I hope that we wouldn't need two! But, I'm not sure how they would get around the exchange issue. I imagine the U.S. Target will still be the closest in my area - I don't think we are getting one in my town.

Yeah, I guess I'll just have to get over my worries about giving out my Social Insurance Number. It's so easy to pick stuff up at Target when we cross the border. I know I'd benefit from having one.

Target will be opening here next March. I'm sure we won't see anywhere near the deals that are available at US Target stores, but it will be interesting to see!

How do you pay your Target US card from here? Do you just mail a cheque? I am torn between waiting to see what the Canadian product may be or going for the US product when we go down in about a week.

Target may not be able to request SIN numbers in Canada, due to our privacy legislation. The "requirement" to divulge a SIN to apply for some/all? credit cards in the U.S. is one of the reasons I never do so. We have good privacy legislation that limits the use of a SIN in Canada, partly because a SIN can be very easily used to steal an identity.

Just sayin'--there's no credit card on earth that is worth making your identity vulnerable to potential thieves.

Chances are we will probably need two cards, as there is the price discrepancy and different credit card rules bestween our two countries. I am confident that Target will work something out for us!

We actually have a US based (Georgia) bank account, so our Target card is paid automatically each month through the US account (set for auto debit).

You can also pay with cash each month @ Target at time of purchase or go in before the next month due date and pay it. Target has a great online system, so you can see your balance and make payments on there.

Yeah, I figured paying the bill wouldn't be a big problem. I could just pay it at the store after checking out. We do have a US$ account from TD so I could mail a cheque in a pinch, but I'd rather just pay it off right away.

Only mentions US Target credit cards, so not sure if this will pertain to Canadian Target shoppers at some point, since TD is a Canadian bank.

Can't wait to see what Target has in store for us Canadians!

what is so great about this red card ??? is it worth it if we only shop there about 3 times a year ?? coming from Canada... I can hit a target in the states..

It is a Target store credit card that allows for a 5% discount on all purchases.

We go to Target often, so we have a card.

We were told that Canadians can apply but they'll only be given a debit card which requires US based bank account for immediate withdrawl. We were told that Candians could no longer get the credit card but it sounds like this isn't the case.

For those of you that have a Red Card is it the credit card that doesn't require immediate payment from a US based bank or is it the debit card? The debit card doesn't work for us but we'd jump on the credit card as we do have a Canadian based US account.

We have had a Target Credit Card since 2010. We pay our Target balance out of our US account (it is based in Georgia/RBC). We have autopayment scheduled, so it takes the balance out of our account.

Not sure if things have changed due to Target entering Canada?

I have had one for many years as I work in Michigan and am at Target weekly. I do pay it from my U.S. debit account at the end of the month while in the store, but I can also pay it by U.S. check by mail which I do sometimes. It is not a debit card -it is a VISA card.
