Target Question - How many gift cards?

Hi!

I just booked a big cruise and could save a lot if I apply for the Target Red Card and start buying Disney gift cards at 5% off. I'm just wondering - how many gift cards or in what denominations can I buy? I need thousands of dollars in gift cards - is this doable? I don't need them all in one shopping, but could I potentially buy $2000 in Disney gift cards in one shot?

Our Target only has $50 gift cards. If you get their pharmacy reward card you get an additional 5% off one day of shopping for every 5 prescriptions you fill. They take that off first then the Red card 5% so it's closer to 9% total off but still a good deal. I haven't bought more than a few at a time but see no reason you couldn't make a larger purchase.

How do you get the 5% off again? Something about the RedCard? What is that exactly? Is it the Target credit card?

If you have a Target Debit or Credit Card, you get 5% off automatically at the register when you use it to pay for your purchases. So, if you buy 2 $50 Disney gift cards, you pay $95 instead of $100 when you swipe your Target card.

We're leaving in 10 days, and I have $1,000 so far. I've been getting them $300 at a time. I don't see why you couldn't get more than that. We're doing a 4 night cruise and then 3 days at WDW, and I was thinking we'd need $2,000 at least. We've already paid for the cruise and the resort and transfers, so we'd only need it for excursions and extras on the ship, then food, souvenirs and park tickets at the resort. Park tickets alone are $710 for three of us for three days. We want to do the Atlantis excursion, so that's another $250 at least.

This is awesome. My husband has some recurring prescriptions, so if I could save 9% on a couple thousand dollars of cards - yippee!

I have the credit card and there's no fee.

The debit card is tied to your checking account.

You can buy as many cards/value as you have credit on your card. If you have a red card (credit) with a $3000 limit, you could buy that much in cards in one shopping trip. If you have a red debit card, you are also going to have a credit limit on it, but you might not know what it is, especially at first. It is tied to your regular checking account so you do also have to have the money in that account if you charge $$$ at once.

I'd prefer to pay for the cruise with other means, in the unlikely event that I'd have to cancel. Not sure how they would refund the cards. I'm just wondering if guest services can stand to deal with a big wad of gift cards being put on the stateroom account, unless they swipe easily.

You can make payments with the gift cards as you would make other payments, either directly with disney or through your travel agent. If you cancel, the refund would be to the cards, so don't throw them out!

I walked in with 16 cards and they can just swipe them at guest services. The guy told me sometimes they can't do it when they are still docked because of computer issues, but he was able to do mine. I think it took 3 or 4 minutes at most.

Thank you so much for this! I almost threw out $1800 worth today, but just couldn't bring myself to do it for some reason. Now I know why!

You can buy as many as you want at one time. Just beware to check your receipt and make sure each gift card has been activated if you do buy a bunch at once. I had two cards that were not activated and unfortunately, had thrown away the receipt before I used the cards . That kind of wiped out the savings....

If you have a credit card you can purchase has much as your limit will allow. If you have the debit card and it has been less then 6 months since getting it you will be luck to purchase $500 (10) at a time, you might get away with doing it twice but they prefer you to build a history with them before allowing you to make large purchases with the debit card. Over 6 months of purchase history and you may be good to go. I purchased 86 $50 cards to pay off my cruise.

I should add, I saved $215 on my cruise not including that I booked it will on board so almost a 15% savings. I will be getting more for my on board account.

Not to knock the savings that this gives, I think it is great, but I think you come out ahead more if you use a Disney Chase Card. I could be wrong on this, buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut, the lady I talked to when I booked my cruise said I would get 100$ on board credit for paying with my Disney Card. So saying it is a 3200$ cruise, I would save 160$ by buying the target cards.

So I would only really save 60$, assuming I booked myself and didn't have any other special offer. And by using my Disney Card I would also earn ~64 points (I have the premier card, the "normal" card would only get ~32 points). So I would come out ahead a whopping 4$ ?

Like I said not frowning on the target card discount, just putting the other alternative out there.
