Here's a basic question: I live in NYC without a car so we have limited access to the targets, walmarts, sam's club, bj's and other great discount places (and limited price-comparison expertise with them). Before our June trip I want to borrow a car and load up on some supplies (everything from rain ponchos to water bottles--you know). And by the way I need some basic houseware too!.(dishes, toaster, blender etc). Are they all pretty much the same, price-wise, or are there some stand-outs? Thanks for any advice. You guys are the best!

I think that in general Walmart is less expensive then Target. So, I would head off to WAlmart to get my stuff.

i agree. walmart is usually less expensive. for the housewares you can shop online. even if you are just comparison shopping.

Also, no membership fees at Walmart!

I do think that Target has a nicer selection of housewares. Not appliances but things like dishes, towels, linens seem more up to date than walmart. If you have a car for the day, it is likely that you can hit both! I'd start with Walmart for the basics.

Are you flying to Florida?

Since you are in NYC, don't discount the smaller stores there. I used to work at ONE PENN PLAZA, and I was in heaven shopping on my lunch.

I got great deals on stuff at Odd Job Trading on 32nd, right off of 7th Avenue. Also, right across the street is the Biggest .99 Store. Then there is Weber right next store.

Conway is great too! If all else fails there is a KMart right at Penn Station, and they are not bad either.

Where in NYC? Did you know that there is a Target in Whitestone, Queens?

Walmart might have better prices. I usually got slightly better merchandise at Target.

OK how embarrassing; having recently returned to Manhattan, I didnt know there were Targets in the other boros, so thanks so much for that info. Meanwhile I'm going to follow ALL your great advice. I knew I was asking the right folks. Thanks.

I like Target for housewares (towels, linens, decorative household items) but I prefer Wal-Mart's prices on toiletries and such (bleach, dish detergent, Tide, etc).

Also Target always seems to have smaller lines and is usually ten times cleaner. Most of the time I pay a little extra for toiletries and such just so I don't have to brave Wally-World. Target also has really cute cheap clothes. I bought a nice lined summer sundress for $22.

Since you are in manhattan, the closet target is on Queens Blvd. About 2 blocks west of the queens center mall. Unfortunately we do not have any walmarts around in queens. The closet walmart is way out on the island. You will be spending more money in gas getting out there. I always go to the target on queens blvd and its pretty good. Park up on the roof and you can load your car right up.

There are no Walmarts in the 5 boros. If you are going to take MTA, Queens Blvd Target is the best bet. If you are renting a car then the Target in Whitestone/CollegePoint is a better option.

I like to go to the Target on Queens Blvd, because I can eat at the Outback Steakhouse!!!

As far as I know K-MART across MACY'S ext to Penn Station closed last year. But listen to MCazer. My mom used to find amazing deals in ODD-JOBS,Conway, and that .99 store.

Thanks again all, I am off and running! Will hit the 34th streer area this weekend and then off to Queens!
