Target is my new grocery store!

After I moved here last year I had to find something to replace my beloved Kroger.

Tried Albertson's. blech...like a Winn Dixie

Tried Publix. Like Kroger but with nothing on sale...ever.

Tried Super Target. Hallelujah!! :)

You should give Publix another shot, they always have great sales (BOGOs) and you can typically get items pretty cheap with coupons there, we prefer Publix then Target personally, and only Target because of their great coupons too.

Fresh food is no longer limited to SuperTarget stores -- Target is currently remodeling stores around the country to carry an expanded line of foods (such as packaged meats and produce) and a bigger selction of pre-packaged stuff.

I understand they did a "blitz" a short while back and converted every Target store in the Philadelphia area to this new format making Philly/South Jersey the first sales market in the U.S. to carry expanded grocery -- anyone from there care to comment??

In my local area, there are no SuperTargets (as the 3 "legacy" chains have a chokehold on the St. Louis market), but Target did recently remodel one of their old "Greatland" stores in the local area to fit this new format -- I'm sure there are more to come.

I hope they do that to our Target, although they did recently expanded the household cleaning items area, they didn't do anything to the food section. Now, ours does have some cold/freezer items, it is limited to milk, eggs, lunch meat, cheese and a few frozen quick fix meals, pizza and ice cream, but they have always had that section as well.

We could really use a new Target in our area Anyway, Walmart has the monopoly here and it is sad because they really aren't keeping up those stores. We have to go about 15 miles from our house to the newest Wal-mart and it is going downhill fast, and there is 1 just over a mile away that I wouldn't take my dog in.

That's interesting you should say that. Target's pricing structure must be pretty reasonable, because I read the first few posts and thought "Huh?? Target, cheap??" I'm in Texas also, and we have two different Super Targets pretty close to us. I have tried them both several times, but am always way less than impressed with them. The selection itself is pretty good, but no better than my Super Walmart or even Kroger, and the prices were noticably, distinctly higher, even without my Kroger card savings. No more Target grocery shopping for me!

Thats weird how it varies. I live in Texas also, North of Dallas, and I love shopping at Super Target. I used to shop at Kroger all the time. They had the best prices. Then they remodeled to a Signature store, and I thought their prices got crazy so I stopped shopping there. I used to only use Super T for meat, because Krogers meat was gross, but then I just started using Super T for everything and now don't even look at Kroger ads. I think their prices are pretty reasonable.

There's one real close to where we live now and we go there once in a while. But, I leave most of the shopping up to my gf now. She's the dealmeister of the century :)

One thing I do HATE about grocery stores here in FL: No one has automated checkout lanes!! what the.... ????

Love Target for grocerys! Only shop their and Costco. Also many of the Target brand "Market Pantry" foods are great and inexpensive, dont be afraid to try any!

Wow! Wish my SuperTarget was as cheap as all of yours!

You'd think since I lived in the richest ag. place in the world, produce would be cheap!!! Super Target is the most expensive place to buy Produce at...although sometimes you can find really good deal on dry goods....

I do wish I could shop there on a regular basis though...it's never busy, super clean, and ALWAYS well stocked..I only shop there for convenience.

In my area the order for best deals is:

1. Kroger
2. Super Walmart
3. Ingles
4. Publix
5. Target

Aldis isn't close enough to be considered as a competitor but we do go to one once or twice a month for a few specialty items. Of course the best way to get deals is to use them all because they will all have different supersavers on sale each week. The 5 on my list are close enough to do that without having gasoline and time factored in to the price.

I'm in Philly. I shop exclusively Target now.

I save on average @ $50 PER shopping trip doing all my shopping at target. (I go about once every 10 days.) I shop for 4 people and spend between $120 - $150 every ten days. I DO buy other stuff at other stores in addition to that $$ btw. I don't use coupons either... unless it happens to fall into my lap or its attached to the can :-)

I guesstimate I'm saving at least $150/monthly if not more by shopping there. I do need to buy some stuff separately at different stores (limited selection of fresh meats - so I go to butcher shop.)

But still save TONS at target. And for many things, I love their UP & UP brand.

Add me to the not impressed list. They remodeled our Targets to add more food items, and the prices are nowhere near as low as the Meijer just across the street, Kroger, or Walmart for that matter.

Even with the remodel, I never see anyone in the grocery section buying things unless maybe the candy aisle.

The Supertargets I have visited have been super clean, the produce prices very high, and nothing in terms of fresh cut meat, just prepackaged.

I would not shop there if one were near us.

Love Super Target here in Atlanta!

I buy almost 100% of my groceries at Super Target. The prices are a little higher than Wal-Mart but as far as cleanliness, variety and workers go...every Super Target that I have been to beats Wal-Mart hands down! Every Wal-Mart near us is AWFUL..they are dirty, crowded and the workers either don't speak English or you can't find one. They usually only have 2 check-outs open and my time is more valuable than that!

I do buy my seafood at Publix b/c I don't like what Super Target has. But our Super Target is awesome as far as marking things down for clearance and just overall a better value...IMO. However, if I am every traveling home to Alabama....the Wal-Marts are AWESOME!

Love my Target, but it is by no means the cheapest place to shop. Why I shop there is because it is clean, attractive, wide aisles , and well stocked. I try to only shop sales and use coupons and can hit some great clearance buys. I will shop at Walmart but only for what I can't get with coupons and sale at Target.

I shop produce and meat at my locally owned store, much better quality then both Walmart and Target and if I shop sales not any more expensive.

I haven't been in any of the SuperTargets in Atlanta.

The Wal-mart here is Phenix City, AL is horrible, and to me it really isn't a true Super Center. Opelika and Auburn have really nice Wal-marts.

Target is high here as well. which is very odd considering that Walmart and Aldi are all within a block of Target. Without a great sale, no way would I grocery shop at Target.

This is what I find in my area too. Aldi, Target, and Wal-Mart are not far from each other.

I get the points people make about Target, I do...but personally I just can't stomach paying more for the exact same product when I KNOW it's cheaper at Wal-Mart. I guess I just honestly don't pay too much attention to the scenery when I shop at Wal-Mart. I'm in, with my list, on a mission. I don't care who or what is shopping there...if it's the cheapest price that's where I'm going. Plus, if anyplace else is cheaper I'm price matching so I don't have to worry about that either.:confused3

I've tried shopping our Target just to comparison shop...overall (in our area anyway) Target can't touch Wal-Mart prices.

My problem is that no matter what I go into get at Target I end up coming out with more stuff than I planned! Then have to tell DH how much money I saved him:banana:

I work at a Super Target in Texas.

It really is so much cheaper for me. Now the "regular" Target up the road is not. And at Super Target our meat isn't cheap (we don't have a butcher so it is prepackaged)

But milk, dry goods, etc... I always do better at Super Target. On Wednesdays I will hit the ad sales at Kroger/HEB. But I fill the rest of my list at SuperTarget.

Granted I get 10% off (sometimes more with employee rewards) but item for item I do better there than anywhere.

Recently I went to Wal-mart with a friend. Haven't been to one in a loong time. It's a new store (only 2 years old) in a nice suburban neighborhood.

Oh gawd how trashy. The potty stalls looked like they had smeared poop on them many times. The produce was wilty. The lines were long. People will put up with that for lower prices right? No, I was willing to purchase a few things on my list, but the prices were higher than Super Target too!

Yeah, South Jersey here and not impressed with the expanded grocery section at Target. While it's very clean and seems to be well stocked, almost everything can be purchased cheaper at supermarket promos and sales. Produce prices are sky high.

Overall I'm kind of disappointed with Target in general anymore. It seems they can't make up their mind whether they want to be a grocery store or an "upscale" discount department store. They also recently discontinued a few products I buy frequently. They've long lost that certain "panache" they had when they first opened in this area about a dozen years ago.

Gotta give a shout-out to WEGMANS....My #1!!!

YES!!! My daughter went to RIT and we were blown away when we first went to the so-called flagship Wegmans in Pittsfield (I believe).

They have a few Wegmans in South Jersey now, but the closest is about 40 miles away. Still anxiously awaiting for one to open closer.

Jim

There are no Wegman's on the West Coast...so I am not familiar with them at all.

Mine is being redone now. It is supposed to be done OCt 17. Unfortunately the remodel is making the rest of the store really small with very narrow aisles. I have bought a few of the current grocery items which are cheaper then Wegmans (they are in the same shopping center). I will have to wait to see how they compare with the produce and meats. Meats has to beat Wegmans, lets see how they compare to Shoprite.
