I see everyone talking about getting their gift cards at Target to save 5% but I'm totally confused by the lingo. What is the difference between a Target credit card, Target debit card, and a red card?

You can get a Target credit card OR a Target debit card (which is just a card linked to your existing checking account, not a new or separate account), and they are BOTH called red cards. :thumbsup2

Using either version of the red card will save you 5% on Disney gift cards.

The Target Red Card is their debit or credit card. That's the name they gave it. The difference is the usual between credit and debit - one takes out the money from your account and can only be used at Target (debit) and the other is a normal credit card that can only be used at Target but gives you all the protection of a normal store credit card.

So why would people have a Target debit linked to their checking account rather than a regular bank debit card? And do these Target debit cards have the same background credit checks as a Target credit card?

Gotcha! So do these cards do a similar credit check or no since they are linked to your actual checking account?

They did not run a credit check on me when I got mine. I just handed them a blank check and then had to put my SS# in like you do a pin number ( the lady that was helping me said it was to verify I owned the checking account) . Then I chose a pin number. They told me the only thing they check is if you have bounced a check with Target.

I have a Target Credit card. I didn't know about the debit card. I may look into that. the target credit card is the only card I am using at the moment, I using debit/cash/check for all my other purchases.

It would be nice to be 100% credit card free.

This will confuse you even more:

I have a Target Red Card (credit card). But I didn't want to use it. So as I pulled out my bank card, the cashier asked if I'd like to use my Target card. I said, "No, I don't want to rack up the balance. Today I'll use my (1st bank) debit card that takes from my checking account."

He then said that my Target Red credit card can also act as a debit card too. And he asked again if I wanted to use it.
I drew a blank stare, and just used my bank debit card. :confused3 Not sure how it can do both, when my Target credit card isn't even linked to my bank account anyway!

Maybe there's a way for them to link your Target Red card to do both (credit and debit)?? Who knows, but I like what I have now, so I'm not changing anything!

Sounds like a confused Target employee. If you have a debit card, normally they will ask you credit or debit. But not the other way around when you have the credit card. I'm guessing both versions of the Target red card look the same to the employee? (Not sure since my DH is the one with the card.)

The cashier was not correct. Target has a separate debit card ( not linked to the credit card at all) you can apply for a debit card and it is linked to your checking account, you will have a pin number etc. no bill, just like writing a check! And you still save the 5% off of your entire purchase. Can you tell where I work?
