(now I have the debit card and not the credit card but I still get 5% off when I use it)

this can really be used for gift cards and get 5% off? so you pay $47.50 for a $50 gift card?????

That doesn't seem right because it is like buying more money. Am I confuzzled?!?!

Thanks

Sounds too good to be true, right? But happily, in this case, it's true.

We bought enough Disney gift cards at Target for our 3 cruise foray in 2014 that all our onboard accounts were paid by them. At 5% off each.

The Disney gift card at Target is considered "entertainment" and therefore you get the discount on the gift card.

It's a great deal. We have saved hundreds of dollars on quite a few cruises now that we have caught on to this. I also buy them for our OB Account.

You can also do it with gift cards online, if you tell it you're paying with your red card and then enter the gift cards. I also know there are folks who save up the $5/$10 back from various target promotions and use them towards Disney gift cards. (Note that you can only use 4 at a time online though).

you can combine them online simply by buying a larger denomination and using the smaller denominations (up to 4) as payment :flower:

For more $ off, I buy target GCs using a credit card that gives me 5% cash back at certain vendors.:thumbsup2

I've been buying my Disney Gift Cards at Samsclub.com. They carry $500 gift cards for $475. Same 5% discount, but much less hassle dealing with larger gift cards. I don't know how long they will carry these big amount cards, but we are purchasing one every 3 weeks and placing them on our DVA to fund next summer's cruise on the Fantasy.

Chase freedom is having extra points this quarter on wholesale clubs -- not sure if gift cards are restricted though!

We have been using our Disney Visa to buy these cards, so we have been earning more points.

Gift cards are not restricted - up to $1500, be sure to buy 3 of the $500 ones, the smaller ones have less of a discount. This is the second quarter they've done it and I've taken advantage both times!

If you end up buying a bunch of disney cards, you can consolidate them using https://www.disneygiftcard.com.

Or use a Disney Vacation Account - it ends up being an extra 2% back when you make your payment (if the account has been open for at least 6 months). I keep my old cards in a small box, I'm not sure I need to with the DVA but a) just in case and b) at this point (>$10k) all those cards are kind of neat

I also have paid for our last couple cruises with gift cards, though I use a different strategy. I buy Disney gift cards at Kroger in easy to manage $500 denominations and pay with my Amex that gives unlimited 5% cash back at grocery stores. Normally gift cards also come with 2x fuel points, but I stock up when they are running a 4x fuel points promotion. I not only get $25 cash back per $500, I also get fuel points worth $2 off a tank of gas (technically $1 off 2 tanks oh gas) or generally at least $35 per $500 gift card. That averages out to a 12% discount before I put the cards into a DVA for an additional 2%.

I might do better with the raise/Target hack, but this is much easier and you have to deal with a lot fewer gift cards to past off $8K.

I'm running average just under 11% on the Target/Raise (cardpool/etc) hack, plus another 1% back on my Disney Visa, plus 2% on the DVA. I wish we had a Kroger but nobody around here does gas points :( The hack can be a PITA, especially when the market is $10 at a time, but a couple weeks back they had a couple $1-2000 cards for just over 6%, so I finished my buying in one swoop. Nearly choked when I saw my credit card bill, but them's the breaks...

Yes, but if you order online you can only order three at a time. I bought $1,000 worth for our trip to WDW in 2014 and it only costs me $950 in the end -- so that's like a free meal or two. It doesn't sound like much, but every penny saved is worth it. Of course, you want to pay the account off each month or the interests will make the savings pointless ;)

I had never thought about this as a benefit to the red card. I have been considering getting the Red Card, and I do believe this may just be the nudge I needed!

Ok so I do have Kroger nearby but my Amex only gets me 3% back on supermarkets. I also have a Red Card. Can I do this...

Let's say I need to buy $6k in Disney cards to finish off my cruise. Can I use my Amex to buy $5,700 worth of Target gift cards when it's 4x fuel points, and then use the Target gift cards in conjunction with my Red Card to buy $6k worth of Disney cards, and then put those on my DVA and pay off the cruise from there?

By my math that would be a $171 statement credit from Amex, 22 $1 off fill up credits for Kroger and another $0.80, and then $120 in Disney gift cards to pay for stuff I was already going to buy while on the cruise. If we assume my biggest vehicle holds 18 gallons, that's $410 in free gas. So total savings of $300 + $171 + $120 + $410 = $1,001.

Please let me know if you see a hole in this before I go down this path...

I see no issue with that. Note that someone on another thread is having a hard time on purchasing the Disney gift cards from Target's website using Target gift cards. I'm 99% sure it's a temporary glitch (their website is AWFUL if you've ever used it) but you always run the risk of Target actually finding and closing the loophole. They haven't done it for years, but it only takes a couple clicks on their end. So I would do a check before you commit - on the Budget board here there's a whole thread where people churn Target gc's into Disney gc's, and if the loophole actually closes, those folks will be the ones going nuts about it! (You could also do a small test run).

The Disney gc's also go in and out of stock on Target's website, so there's that too. Of course, as I see it, the worst outcome is you have to drive to a Target and not get the extra 5% discount from them (unless you get the right cashier in the right mood) :)

The Chase Freedom will also have this benefit for wholesale clubs in the 4th quarter, so $1500 now and another $1500 starting in October. It's a great deal!

Sweet....
