Target Buying Zellers!

So, we will finally have Target in Canada! I know some will be sad to see a Canadian retailer go down, but I don't really like Zellers and I love Target. Retailing is one area (only one) where the Americans do it better.

I wonder if all Zellers stores will be converted or if they are planning on closing most of them? I love Target and really really really dislike Zellers (they have dust on half their merchandise!). Here's hoping our city will get a Target!

My sister works at Zellers and we've known about the Target thing for a few years now...I thought they bought them a long time ago! That's why the HBC rewards changed and you can basically only redeem for HBC cards and stuff. That said, I don't think we are actually getting Target stores (although I agree it would be nice because I LOVE Target). I think they are just taking over the company and making changes but keeping the Zellers name. That's the word for now anyways. They are shutting down a lot of unprofitable Zellers stores as well.

I hope they eventually bring Target up to Canada, but for now I think that's a rumour at best. Maybe they will at least bring some of their great merchandise and put it in a Zellers store!

BTW....I LOVE Zellers! The store that I usually shop at is very busy and I never see dust on the shelves. However, I have been to other stores in the city and they are in terrible condition so I'm glad something is being done!

The article does say that the Zellers name will disappear eventually. Target has paid 1.8 billion for Zellers, so it is a done deal. They will open 100-150 Targets in 2013-2014 and other outlets will be sold off to chains such as Walmart, some leases may go to Kohls, etc. I guess they will keep the best locations for transition to Target. Our nearest Zellers is always a mess, and I never shop there, but I would if it were a Target.

I use to go to Zellers to get Heinz Tomato Soup. They haven't carried it in a long time so now they rarely ever see me.

Really excited about this too! Hope they improve the lighting and service in whatever stores they take over. One thing I always liked about Target is there's always someone there to help.

Zellers were always so hard to manouever through.

I love Target

I am doubtful that it will be as well priced as stuff in the US Target Stores. I think I will still be going there when I hit Buffalo for shopping.

I feel the same way. I have more fun in a big box store going up and down the aisles looking for treasures and getting major bang for my buck. I don't get the same thrill when shopping at Holt Renfrew or the Bay - I feel like a sucker shopping at those places because I know I can get many things for so much less. Costco and Target gets my hard-earned $$$. I like saving my money for WDW.

I'm very happy about this. We hate zellers. There is something about that store that has a yuck factor to it. I used to really enjoy shopping there but the past few years it's gotten grungy and yucky. We love going to target when we go south so we are happy about this.

Question....didn't lord and Taylor buy out the bay? The bay still has it's name...does anyone know? I thought it happened a couple of years ago.

Zeller's is a dump. dark, dingy, no room to maneuver. looks like someone threw up merchandise and it landed everywhere in that store.

Interesting to note that they didn't actually buy out Zellers. They bought the leases of the buildings that Zellers occupies. Which to me means that they assigned zero dollars to the value of the brand, merchandise and company as a whole. They just want the locations.

I've never been to a Target out of all the times I've been in the US. Will miss Zellers clearance items, but happy to see a new store.

The Zellers in Market Mall and the Zellers in Chinook Centre here in Calgary have been confirmed to be new Targets!!
