Target Breach.

There was a breach with our local Gas Company accounts a few years back. The company gave each customer a free acct to the three credit report companies for a year to track suspicous activity.

Target should do the same if they want to keep customer service at a premium.

I only ever use my RedCard, credit card at Target, so I will monitor that account (once the website actually comes back up), but I am not terribly worried. If a charge comes up, they will take care of it and issue a new card.
This is also why I never use a debit card.

And they didn't even give us the 20% off those stinking disney gift cards after luring us all in! ;)
That seriously made me laugh :)
Well. Isn't that special?

I used my red card 7 or 8 times in that period. So far so good but I'm going to call and request that they send a new one.
I know - me too! :(

I agree - Target should give people this service and it help to ease the "worry".

I'm trying to understand the best course of action. For us that have the Target Debit cards - they don't have access to our actual bank Debit cards. The information they have is potentially the Target pin codes and the the Target cards themselves. I'm thinking canceling the Bank Debit cards wouldn't really "help" in this situation because they don't have the actual bank debit card numbers. Instead, we might need to consider canceling or changing our Target Debit cards as that's the information these crooks potentially have. They could potentially create fake Target red cards and then go in and use them to wipe out your bank account that way.

Anyone following my thought process here? I called BofA and he didn't have a clue what I was referring to and said my checking was fine (and I monitor it very closely). You can't even get through to the Target number right now :(

I never use my bank Debit card as I'm a credit card girl for all the perks and pay off my charges every week. This is the only card linked to my checking and I think I might switch it over to the credit version once this settles. Yikes!

Ps. Wanted to add - while I was researching this it dawned on me (and others have posted) to at a minimum change your PIN number on the Target Red card. I was able to do this online with no issues but I hear others having website issues.

More and more reason to just use cash, I guess. Saving 5% is not worth it. And if I don't pay the balance in full each month, the interest rate is somewhere around 20 or 24% - that's not a savings.

I think 2014 is going to be my year of "cash only" and "debt free" :)

A CC gives you more protection then cash. You lose cash you are out the cash. You lose a CC you are out nothing. This is exactly why I would never tie my bank account to any debit card but the one my bank issued. I also always check every CC and bank statement and then I issue the payment.

One can be debt free and use a CC. You never charge what you do not have cash in the bank to pay off. I have had CCs for over 30 years and I never pay them interest.

If you pay by a CC and need to do a return many place do not need a receipt. Cash always needs a receipt. I have lost receipts before.

I spoke with a customer rep. at my bank. He said change the PIN number on my Red card debit card. There was no need to close my checking account as there was no bank info. on the card to steal. He also has the Red debit card and said he changed his PIN early this morning.

I've tried to log on and call to do this - can't get through. Will try again when this all dies down in a few days.

I think changing the pin on the Red card is a must. That's all I plan to do.

Good idea with changing the red card pin number. I will do that when the site comes back up.

I checked this morning and I spotted at Target several times since black friday and always used the red card.

I also went in and changed my Red Card pin just now. If they got the actual card number, they can't use it if they use the old pin. The site was just working (about 9:45 EST). A little slow but I got through.

I have the credit, not the debit, but I haven't been able to get on the site all morning. But, I was just able to access the mobile site on my phone, no problem at all.

I been trying to call target this morning since 8 am and just get a busy signal :worried: . I am going to the store and cancel my card. My bank is going to Flag anything from Target for the next 90 days. What a pain. Anyway,

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE :santa:

Update: Went to store and can't not close account, I need to call 866-852-8680. And the line is busy.

I called my bank, and they were already aware of the issue. I changed my pin number, as I have the debit card. I'll keep an eye out on it, and I already have credit monitoring from a best buy card issue before. That's all I'm doing. I didn't shop on black Friday itself, and from what I read that was the worst of the "info grab".

I was able to change my PIN online with Target with no issues.

I feel this is the safest way to protect ourselves right now :)

So if I change the PIN on my redcard debit card I shoould be good? I'm going to Disney the 2nd of Jan and was going to buy Disney GCs soon...

I have been trying all morning to log in at Traget with no success. Can you change your PIN on the Red debit card in store? I'll be there later today.
I checked my bank account, no problems. I use my Red debit card probably about 7 times a week there!

I'm pretty sure the stores do not have access or the ability to change this information for you but that's just my assumption. I had no issues logging in and even ended up doing it for a close friend as she couldn't log in. Perhaps try a different browser? I know they must be getting hammered as more and more find out.

The website also asked for like your zip code, member since date and some other type of security questions.

Make sure you are logging into Manage Your Red Card as well, which appears to be separate from any Target.com account you might have. You could have the same log in information but there is a separate area for the Red Card log in.

That's just what I was thinking!
I'm not feeling any "love" for Target this holiday season!:sad2:

I can log into Target just fine, but trying log on to manage my red card is impossible, server stops responding. tried Firefox, Explorer, even on my ipad. grrr.

I can't get in, either. I've also been calling the phone # every minute or so for about 1/2 hour and busy signals each time.

I do feel bad for the employees working at Target today and the next few days, dealing with this.

So Target was the victim of a breach that's inconveniencing many of its customers but doing everything they can to help those customers; and while they vey clearly exclude Target gift cards from the standard 5% "bonus" discounts they made no such inclusionary/exclusionary distinction with the 20% coupon discount (so some shoppers chose to ignore the words 'gift card' on all the, well, gift cards) - but it's okay to feel no love for the company that really doesn't have to offer any discounts or promotions?
