'Tangled' continues to weave spell on world BO

By PAUL DERGARABEDIAN - For The Associated Press

LOS ANGELES — As it heads toward a half billion dollar worldwide gross, "Tangled" is proving that a lack of family fare in the international marketplace is good for a Disney animated feature adapted from a beloved fairy tale. The Rapunzel-based film was the top-grossing movie overseas for the fourth consecutive weekend, earning $23.4 million from 41 territories in its 11th weekend of release.

Oscar has proven its long reach with both "The King's Speech" and "Black Swan" showing continued strength in the foreign arena. A fourth place finish with $13.4 million in 20 territories shows that this King has appeal to audiences the world over as it nears the $175 million global mark.

International audiences in 23 territories have also embraced "Black Swan" which dances into fifth place with $12.7 million and a worldwide total of nearly $130 million. The global importance of the Academy Awards translates into dollars for the major awards contenders as both "Speech" and "Swan" clearly demonstrate through their globally enhanced "Oscar Bumps."

Here are the top 20 movies at international theaters last weekend, followed by international gross for the weekend (excluding North America), number of theater locations, number of territories, worldwide gross to date (including North America), and number of weeks in release as compiled Wednesday by global media measurement company Rentrak Corp. and provided by Hollywood.com:

I'm flabbergasted this film did so well. Now only if Disney didn't spend over a quarter of a billion making it and they would have a huge money maker on their hands.
If I remember the Princess and the Frog was advertised a lot more than this film and it did half the amount. I'm kinda shocked that the difference between the two.
Of course I enjoyed Tangled more so maybe good movies (not that the frog movie was bad) actually determine how well they will do. I know that is a stretch though...

Where is the newest Potter thing?
Or was that too early for this list??

Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows, Part 1, worldwide box office was $947,622,346

Toy Story 3's worldwide box office was $1,063,161,943:eek:

I would say it was a solid year for the Disney box office: Toy Story 3, Alice in Wonderland, Tron and Tangled. We will forget Prince of Persia and Sorcerer.

I can't wait to see that movie. Thanks for the review. I did not care for the frog movie it was just ok.:wizard:
