Tangled!!! And no I don't mean the movie

My 12 year old DD has hair down to her knees. Yes, her knees.

Yes, EVERYBODY calls her Rapunzel! (She had a great time being Rapunzel at MNSSHP last year! No wig required!)

Her hair is very fine, and she has an abundance of it. Evidently that's the perfect storm for tangling. It's been braided, pretty much 24/7 since she was 5. She has also always been good about it being brushed combed and taken care of because I told her if she wasn't the hair would get chopped. I'm not known for making idle threats.

I would agree with all the advice from previous PP's - the only thing I would add is that I swear by Garnier Fructis Length and Strength conditioner. It's the BEST for detangling. I also mix a small amount of it with water in a spray bottle and that's what I use for a spray on detangler. I can only get it at the CVS around here. You can actually go on their website and they will tell you where it is available around you.

pixiedust: Try this and you will never have another tangle. Get L'Oreal EverPure Sulfate-Free Moisture Deep Restorative Masq'ie. Don't let the name scare you. It is about $6 but if you take the container and mix with half conditioner and mix with equal amounts of water in another container. What I do is take little more than half out of container then add the water to it and shake well. It should still be some what thick. (It will last twice as long and I feel my hair is cleaner) After shampooing use about a tablespoon on the hair. You will never have another tangle

I didn't read every post so I apologize if someone else has given this tip or if it's obvious and I'm the only one who was brushing my daughter's hair wrong. :rotfl2: My hair dresser told me to brush an inch or so at a time. Start at the bottom and brush the bottom inch all around and work your way up. If you start too high up you make the tangles worse.

Good luck!

I just had to chime in on this. As an old white woman with extremely thick, extremely curly hair, I always use a hair pick (forget the wide tooth comb or a brush) - the type a lot of African Americans use. In the morning, I spritz my hair with a water bottle that has some conditioner mixed in. Then I pick through the hair and nature does the rest. When I was young I set my hair with the old brush roller the size of orange juice cans. Now I'm just glad I have hair.

Myself and my 3 girls all have long hair (down to waist or past tush when longest). Have done Locks for Love (and Pantene) a few times. I dont really do anything special besides pantene or dove shampoo and conditioner, detangler if needed to brush out when wet (no comb unless I am making a little part to do a tiny side braid) or when brushing when dry. I can tell you with the 4 of us my youngest has a tiny bit of curl/wave and hers tangles more than mine and my oldest is stick straight. Also I only wash our/my hair every 2 days or 3 for my girls if they are not sweaty.

We've had good luck with the knot genie: http://www.knotgenie.com/ DD doesn't complain as much about getting her hair brushed when I use it & it looks nice & sleek after. We still use detangling spray if it's a bad day, but don't have to daily.

We have also had good results with the knot genie. Our children's salon used it on DD the last time she had her hair cut and she loved it. I bought the knockoff from Goody, and even though it looks nearly identical, it doesn't work nearly as well for DD, so we bit the bullet and bought the real deal. Her hair is very fine, but she has tons of it and it tangles if you just look at her sideways. She is so tenderheaded that most of the time when I brush it for her (she never gets through to the bottom, so she gets a matted mess underneath), it ends up in a crying fest. The knot genie works wonderfully on her hair both wet or dry, and left it looking smooth and shiny for the first time in a LONG time. She doesn't even ask for the detangling spray any more. You can get it on Amazon for way cheaper than a salon. I made the mistake of paying big bucks at the salon for it, and later thought to check Amazon. Oh well, when we need a replacement or an extra one, I'll buy it online.

I have tried most of the suggestions on here. And we have been tangle free for few weeks now :yay: So far we've used the sprout leave in, knot genie, satin pillowcases and keeping hair in a pony tail - at all times!! I put a loose braid and tie at the bottom for bed so not uncomfy. We also invested in the Biolage conditioning balm and have high hopes for that as well.

I never in a million years thought I would see my daughter brushing her hair herself and not having a meltdown. Sounds so sill but I could cry I'm so happy. :cool1:

I also wanted to mention a brush I found on amazon- just as a fluke I ordered one and man this thing works great. It's now my favorite brush too. I ordered 3 more of them:rotfl: In case they become unavailable. It's similar to knot genie but looks like a normal brush. It's called the Wet Brush. My dtr LOVES this brush- it is the only one she will use. And doesn't mind using it. Here is the link for it...

thanks again for the amazing women on this board I don't know what I'd do without you:hug:
