After looking through several pages on the camping board and about a dozen searches, I found nothing that I could list this pic under. When we were getting off the interstate this evening this rig was in front of us.

By the looks of things I would say he was overloaded. They where heading north and stopped in for fuel before going on to Canada.

I would like to see him drive that up on the roof, scary. That smart car only weighs 1800 lbs so he is probably under the GVWR.

I'd say he was overloaded too. That looks like an older pre-08 F350. They didn't have the same GVWR of the new ones. And that truck is squatted a lot more than my 2011 with a 20,000 lb race trailer attached. The race trailer has about a 5000 lb pin weight. "Payload" rating for my trick is about 6200 lbs.

I guess that guy has some ramps to get that little car up there. But I bet it's very touchy getting it up there without overshooting the end.

Also, I was initially wondering why a guy with a trailer and a separate tow vehicle would need a 2nd vehicle since the truck is available. Not like driving a Class A and having to unplug to go get a loaf of bread.

But then I remembered my trip to Tampa in January after the Disney marathon where I got a taste of the snow bird life. Some come down after Thanksgiving, many come down after Christmas, and they stay for a couple months before going home. So I would bet this is a couple - the truck is HIS and the SmartCar is HERS. They spent a few months in Florida and are now headed home to Canada.

But I bet ya'll had already figured that out.... :surfweb:

PS - Based on my brief visit with family who were wintering in Tampa, I derived the following: 1) yes, the weather's great 2) after about a month you are sometimes desperate for something different to do - ANYTHING different 3) for those where only short-term stays (like 2 weeks) are allowed such as a military base where we were (cheap sites), life revolves around "what next". Get in line before breakfast at the camp office on the morning of day 14 to try to snag another 2 weeks. Or try to line up a vacancy on short notice somewhere else. But those somewhere elses have to be pre-inspected.

It almost makes it worth the cost to snag 3-4 months of back-to-back reservations at the Fort for our snow bird contingent to not have the stress of moving around every couple weeks.:earseek:Plus WDW has lots do do. I may have just seen my future. Wonder if I should invite DW?

Wish I would of talked to him to see how they get that up there, and were he was coming from.

Couple people probably just set it up there.

Ed, when you snowbird, do you intend to work at Disney too? Like Scupper? I could snowbird and work in one of their clinics I guess.

I think getting the smart car up there wouldn't be too bad with the right ramps. I've driven cars up transporters before. It's interesting.

I wonder how he gets out though. Or gets back in.

They probably are snow birds and my recollection of a snow bird is not someone that is nimble and interested in climbing up the side of a truck.

I bet he winches it up there, I drove my John Deere up ramps into the bed of my pickup once, never again.

1) Why think the pickup is overloaded, possibly carelessly by the pickup owner?
2) Maybe,
. . . the Smart Car couldn't stop in time, and drove over the pickup
. . . with low ground clearance of the itty-bitty car, the pickup is now hooked/snagged/attached to the Smart Car

To go OT: :rolleyes1

Tiggerdad, honestly, I think the longest vacation I could manage is 2 weeks away from home or a few days longer if a lot of driving was involved.

We've only done WDW vacations as long as a week. I'd like to do 2 weeks someday at the Fort and have the last week of January and first week of February in my sights. :sail:Oh, and DW says she's invited herself to my retirement years whenever those days come. :o

But if I WERE to work at Disney, my goal would be to ultimately be a conductor on the MK railroad. I understand the steam train operations are a part of the Main Street Attractions area which includes the front gate so I would probably have to start there and try to move on up. But I don't want to work at Disney.

The other thing (to try to get us back on topic) is I like having a small camper like my Aliner (and popup before that) and I see very few long term campers (say, more than 2 weeks) in small setups. The trailer in the picture above is a big 'un but that's not my style. I'd rather take several trips with my small rig to different places every year and not post up in one place for too long. That's just me. :confused3
