Can someone tell me how long the drive is from Tampa, by the airport, to MCO and then from BWV back to Tampa? I need to know so I can judge my ds's drive time to pick me up at MCO. Thanks.

Hour and a half or so. Maybe more due to construction on I-4, maybe less if you're travelling at off hours.

It's an easy easy drive in any event.

I'd plan on closer to two hours. It's an 80 mile drive from my house to the Port of Tampa, (a little longer between the airports) and it took me 90 minutes going and 80 on the way home from Tampa last Sunday afternoon/evening. And there's more traffic between MCO and I-4 than my house and I-4.

Thanks guys! Sure would have been easier to get a flight into Tampa, but nothing was open for someone flying with a cat!!! Then I could have just rented a car and driven myself to WDW. I guess those hours on the road are a small price to pay in order to get your cat delivered..free of charge.

Free? Isn't it really COD? Cat On Delivery?

As for the original question ... the drive is pretty easy. My inlaws live in Tampa and we fly in/out of Tampa all the time. Sometimes the prices are better.

Non rush hour no accidents, 1 hr 10 min.

Considering it's a 90 mile trip, not all of it on highways, and not all of it 70mph zones, just how fast are you going???

I'll stick with my earlier, and REALISTIC answer, minimum 90 minutes, but I'd plan on two hours.

I'm going with your estimate Anne.....my poor ds called me last night to ask me if there were any other arrangements I could make since someone told him it would most likely take him 3 hrs to make the ride!! I know he'll be leaving work around 4ish but I can't imagine it would take 3 hrs to get to MCO from his workplace. Everyone has told me an hour to WDW, 30 mins to MCO from there is best case scenario....so I would think 2 hrs would be doable at 4. Let's just hope...I don't want to ride with a grumpy ds!!!

Is your son going back to Tampa? Then it would be a 3-4 hour round-trip for him. Maybe that's what his friend was talking about.

Yep that's what he's doing. That could very well be the case. I hope so. It's his cat, I'm doing him a favor so I guess I should just not worry about the length of his drive. I'm sure it won't be more than two hours each way, at the most. My dad drives up to WDW from Pompano Beach and it only takes him a bit over 3 hours...it's 4 hrs from Tampa to Pompano Beach, each way. I just can't imagine there being enough traffic/construction to warrant a 3 hr drive each way!!!

I can imagine much more then an hour at rush hour depending on where he starts. The intersection with 275 and I-4 is under construction and a disaster!!! It took me 45 minutes a few weeks ago from the airport to I-4. (4 PM would be rush hour!)

What would it cost to just send the cat to Tampa as cargo? You would fly into MCO.

This is a good question. Both of my cats came from Winnepeg Canada and were shipped to Chicago where I picked them up. My kitties are Japanese Bobtail cats and I like the breeder. IIRC it cost less than $150 and that was for an International flight.

goofy--

WHEN is the cat coming in, and to WHAT airport? (I'm all confused here, do'nt mind me).

I'm asking only because I have to go to Tampa this weekend, and maybe I could help you out.

Anne

Thanks Anne. Sorry for the confusion....he is in Tampa, works on Martin Luther King Blvd (Rd, St, something like that) lives on Harborside Dr. According to him, he is about 10 minutes west of Tampa Intnl., and right on some water. I am flying into MCO on the 29th. This is when I originally had planned to go to WDW. So, when he was able to move into an apt this week, rather than Dec 1, I decided to just bring the cat with me. He figured that was good since he would have had to pay the airfare for me if I had to take a different flight in order to bring the cat to him. So, rather than take a different flight, into Tampa, over the THanksgiving week-end (with prohibitive fares!) I said that I would just go to WDW a day earlier than I had planned. I am such a good mom....forcing myself to go to WDW earlier. So, he is driving up from is work, but leaving early, to MCO to pick the cat up and then bring me to WDW on his way back to Tampa.
It would have cost almost the same for the cat to fly as cargo as it is for me to fly with her in the cabin!!! And I just have a hard time putting her in a crate and stuffing it in the belly of the plane. I know that a lot of animals go this way.....breeders, both cat and dog, do it all the time. But they won't fly the animal if the temp. drops below 45 at either end of the flight. So, that's not an option unless I wait until the spring. And since I have such a problem with putting her into that plane belly..my only option is...flying with a cat. It's basically ds's problem. He wanted to save the money, so I'm not sure why I'm so concerned about the drive. 4 hrs out of his life isn't a big deal. And it saves him $250 in airfare.
So, thanks for the offer Anne. That's really nice of you. And to think that my dh just can't understand why I like these boards so much! I'll be sure to let you all know how it went. It should be quite the adventure.

It is not a 90 mile trip. Tampa Airport to the Poly Resort is 78 miles with a travel time of 1hr 25min.

The closest Disney exit is Exit 62. entering Disney via exit 62 will be at about the 1hr 10min mark, at the speed limit.

That is "realistic" with favorable traffic conditions.

That's all well and good, but I think you need to take reading comprehension 101 again, because this thread has been talking MCO to TPA all along. :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

I know the area--he's in good company over there...I know of at least one FBI agent, an air marshall, and a couple cops who live on Harborside. :goodvibes

You're kidding right??!!!! OMG....I can't wait to tell him to be sure to behave. I wonder if it's the proximity to Tampa Intnl.
Just as an aside....I guess he's not too upset about the drive anymore. I just went waaaay out on a ledge and asked him to pick me up some groceries before he left, so that we wouldn't have to stop on the way from MCO to BWV. He said no problem. I think this is all going to work out just great! Thanks Anne for the info. Have to ask though....what kind of people are you hanging out with??!!!! sounds pretty impressive to me.
