We are thinking about our next trip being the first week in January - like Jan 1- Jan7 - thoughts? Thanks in advance for any advice or experiences you have had during that time frame

We were there Jan 1-5 this year. I thought it was less crowded than when we go in mid August. We had no problem getting to do all we wanted and we were upgraded at both resorts (split stay) and that has never happened in August. Weather was warm enough the first two days that we were able to swim but then it got chilly (gloves and scarves at night) but it was actually nice since we are so used to sweating in Aug!

Thank you so much!!!! Where the decorations still up for a bit?

That first week in January you'll have the WDW Marathon to deal with.............but that isn't that bad. We were there during that period this past Jan. Crowds a bit larger than other times but runners run............they don't tour....at least until Sunday :). Getting a resort, especially if you want near Epcot can be a bit more problematic but..........its doable. Weather is a wildcard. We had cool.......to 75 degrees....:) Got to swim in the resort pool.

Thank you so much!!! I really appreciate your feedback!!! Love my DISBoard friends!

We always go for an anniversary trip every year from January 2nd-6th and I find it always pleasant. It can be pretty cold some nights, but the decorations are still around, despite the cold it's always one of my favorite trips of the year.

We LOVE going the first week of January. The decorations are still up, some years it's pretty cold but we are Canadian so we will take that over snow! You can tell where people are from if they are swimming in January lol. I've found some years the crowds are heavier, but we don't worry about it and just go with the flow. I don't think you will regret going the first week of January!

Been twice then - it depends a bit on how the days fall in the week due to when folks have work and school vacations. If the 1st is a Friday - 2nd and probably the 3rd will still be crowded - for example. But that Monday ought to be light crowds. For this year - with the 1st on a Sunday and the 7th on Saturday - it's probably a great week to be there. Might be a little busier towards tne end of the week with the races - but the true marathon folks tend not to visit the parks until after the race.

Both years - for me - the decorations were not up the whole week. Like - I think our first day at MK they were up - but when we went later in the week - they were gone. I think the decorations come down around property over several days - magically disappearing overnight. Weather wise - could be 40 degrees, could be 78 degrees. Could range 30 degrees in one day.

You guys rock!!! for the dates we are looking, we would fly down on Sunday, December 31st, our 20th anniversary, plan to do La Nouba that night (the early show) and maybe a Wishes Cruise BUT steer clear of any parks of course :) then Monday January 1st start our park days...I am hoping folks will start to go home on that Monday, January 1st...what do you all think? I am so appreciative of your thoughts and shared experiences!

I think most schools will be out at least until the following Monday. Some won't start until mid-week. Parks will be busy, but not nearly as busy as Christmas week. They just won't really empty out until a week or so later.

I agree with @mom2rtk. This is the first year since I began teaching over a decade ago that my board has shifted the break, so I'll be down Jan 1-6.

Most of Ontario Canada is following suit and running break starting Dec 24th. I imagine some US schools are doing this as well.

I agree. We've gone three times beginning on New Years Day, and the crowds were extremely heavy the week following. Keep in mind, not only do many schools not resume until a week after New Years, but the U.K. and South America have extended holidays then, too. As well as colleges/universities .
