Talk to me about Space Mountain

It's very shaky to me, almost to the point of being unpleasant, yet it's not undoable for me. I think the darkness contributes to its less likable-ness.

Agreed. I've done it once and it was enough for me. I like a smooth roller coaster, space mountain is the opposite. I will only do it again when my kids make me go with them.

space mountain is btmrr in the dark.. it's not very smooth.. there's isn't too many drops it's more sharp turns and quick jumps up instead of drops down.

To further expand on what soniam said, someone under 7 must ride in the same "vehicle" as an adult. That means a unit that is a single car in a train. So, for Space Mountain, there are two cars per train, each with 3 seats, 1 per row. You could sit with your kids in one car, but you would not be allowed to have the under 7 child ride in the front car, and you in the second car, even if you were in the seat directly behind the coupling and they were right in front of you.

On Barnstormer, each car in the train only has one row of seating (unusual), which is why it sometimes leads to issues for people with multiple kids under 7.

I don't have kids, but this particular safety rule fascinates me for some reason.

Also, if you can handle BTTMR, you can handle Space. It's a bit rougher, but not really any more intense.
This is exactly the issue I was talking about. So it sounds like it is doable, DH and I each sit with one of our kids that is under 7 and the oldest can sit by himself. Based on everyone's feedback I think I could handle it but now I am wondering how my kids would do in the dark. We will definitely have to try it at least once on our next visit!

I went on Space in DL Paris and was totally convinced we were in different cars, so much so that I checked my photos! We had over the shoulder restraints, do they not have them in WDW then? .

Just a lap bar in WDW.

My husband went on this ride 9 years ago and HATED it. He said it was too jerky, felt unsafe and never agan. He absolutely loves loves Rocker and Roller in Hollywood studios. For some reason, lots of people do love this ride. I think space mountain is the only attraction that has a neat post show after the ride.

I hate drops as well...but I would compare the drops (and I think there are 3) on SM to the drops, size-wise, on 7DMT. I have ridden it when the lights were partially on, so I could see the drops and I've also ridden in the pitch black. They feel more intense when you can't see them, so be aware of that! Definitely not smooth, though.

FWIW we always ask to ride the Omega side because it's far smoother than Alpha. I was seriously terrified of this ride as I am a total wus and not at all a thrill ride person...now, after going on it dozens of times, I know the ride inside and out and it's just a sort of milder fun. My advise would be to ask for Omega and go from there. The second time is far, far more enjoyable as you know what to expect, and taking the unexpected out of it takes the anxiety out of it too.

Good luck!
