Talk to me about Resale and Add Ons Through Disney

So we did the math and what we spend in a year at Disney is a decent size resale contract. If we took a break this year we could pay in cash around March but probably would not be able to use the points for when we can travel. April through June.
So I was thinking buy a small contract now, use for our November trip and then add on through Disney for the rest of the points we need and use for April-June.
There are still lots of variables so I don't know if it would work or be worth the effort.
Seems like one year of Disney trips to travel for the next 30 or so is a no brainer.
So if I add on through Disney to my resale contract will all the points have restrictions on use or just the resale ones?
Thanks

If you found the perfect resale add-on now, it would take close to two months to get into the system (i.e. mid-Sept). November is a popular time for DVC members and there is already spotty availability for most of the month, given the lower point costs, F&W, Christmas decoration and Thanksgiving. Unfortunately, by the time you get your points, you may not find anything available in November, so unfortunately your plan may be doomed.

You could purchase a small direct contract now and DVC may be able to "magically" find a reservation for you in Nov. Then you could take time to find the ideal add-on over the next several months.

Or . . . take you Nov trip on cash and start saving your extra $$ and purchase all of your points as a resale. You'll save a ton! The restricted options are not really a good value anyway and could be taken away from all DVC owners at any point.

Any points you buy resale will have the restrictions. Any points purchased direct will have all available perks.

Keep reading these DVC boards -- I have learned a bunch since joining. We purchased our first contract direct, but all additional points have been resale, even after the "restrictions". Good luck!:thumbsup2

There is a lot more to it than just buying and using. Take some time to read the DVC threads here on the DIS to give you a good feel for what you are buying.

Yeah I get that part. Just trying not to skip a year of vacation if at all possible. I would prefer to pay cash and buy resale. We purchased AP's this year knowing we would get two more trips out of them. November and April.
If we skip those trips we have the cash for a resale contract but I wouldn't be able to use our AP's so I then I kind of wasted that money.

It's not the end of the world, again to spend what we pay in a year to travel and get our rooms paid for until 2042 makes sense. With flights, AP's, MF's and food we are still spending less cash each year than we are currently.
I don't think I can say the same thing if I buy through Disney and finance. Although I get why that makes sense, it's very tempting.

Just trying to see if there was a way to still travel this year.

i would agree that it would be difficult to buy right now and use the pts for this november. maybe you could get in at SSR but booking on such short notice for such a busy (for DVC) period is not a great plan IMO.

So if I add on through Disney to my resale contract will all the points have restrictions on use or just the resale ones?

your pts would be segregated depending on how you bought them.

but make sure you take a thorough look at the point charts for trading out before you really consider the resale rules a limitation...

Have you thought about renting a reservation from a DVC owner?
