We allowed DS (16) to take a friend with him last year, because his sister was away at college & I knew he'd be bored with just DH & I. We at first considered asking for airfare, but then I felt so uncomfortable approaching the parents for money, they didn't offer and we didn't want this to be a burden on them in any way. We also justified it that the friend was doing us a favor by keep DS entertained.
We had the dining plan so the only thing they needed money for was extra snacks or souvenirs and we didn't offer to pay for that. The friend bought gifts for his family at DTD the last day of the trip with his own money.
In the end he still talks about what a blast he had & didn't realize Disney wasn't just for little kids. That made us feel great and we would definitely invite friends in the future, but once they are working adults, they can pay their own airfare!
