Can anyone tell me how this works? I have read something about checking it at the gate. How do I do this. Does it count as one of your bag allowances?

No it doesn't count as a bag.A gate agent will tag the stroller, you fold it up before you get on the plane,an airline baggage handler will take it down then back up for you when you land. You can take it right to the door of the plane.

I'm pretty sure that most airlines DON'T count it as luggage. Just wheel your baby and stroller to the gate and ask for a claim tag for the stroller. It should have your flight number and you keep a copy so you can claim it when you land. Just take the stroller all the way to the plane, and right before you get on, just fold it up and set it aside (near the stairs that go down) and someone will pick it up and put it under the plane. When you get off, it should be unloaded and there waiting for you! Super easy! ::yes::

Depending on how old your child is, I would say just check it as luggage. Our dd is 3.5, and we found it MUCH easier to just check it, and not see it again until Orlando. We had so much other stuff to worry about anyway.

The entire advantage to gate checking a stroller is that you have use of the stroller IN THE AIRPORT. You wheel all the way down the jetway and up to the door to the aircraft.

Don't wait until you get to the door to say you want to gate-check it, though. Go up to a gate agent when you arrive at the gate, and there will be a tag or two to fill out. Make sure to do this in advance so you don't have to delay your boarding or create some sort of back-up at the aircraft door.

We take a stroller and a wheelchair. DS has a wheelchair but is able to get out to get on the plane. We check it at the gate. DD is 2 and we take her stroller to the gate also. It is a good idea to take it to the gate and not check it in with the luggage so you have it in the airport especially if you have a connection. We were stuck in Atlanta for 10 hours (power outage) I would have been lost without the stroller. We used it so DD could sleep and we threw all our carryons in it to wheel around when we went to look for food etc. It is so easy. when you get to your gate just let them know and they will put a tag on it , you wheel it down the jetway and then they take it for you and put it under. When you get off the plane there it is...well, sometimes you have to wait a minute or two. I like the fact that we have it so when we have to go get our luggage DD is in the stroller, less walking in the airport.
