Taking pictures at WDW

Can anyone tell me would you either buy more memory for your digital camera ( mine holds approximately 188 pics ), or just download them onto picture CD's at the photo places? A kodak picture CD here is 2.99 for 100 pictures, I am sure they are more down there. Any ideas would be appreciated!

18 days until we get to POP

I would buy another memory card. You will definitily use it again, and it is a lot easier to just change a memory card than it is to put your pictures on a cd.

Do both.

Imagine if you will...

You buy a 1gb memory card. You take it to WDW and take hundreds of pics, and because the card is so big, you don't have to change cards once - so ALL of your pics for a 10-day vacation are on it.

Then your camera gets stolen.

Or lost.

Or rained on.

Or dropped under a parking tram's wheels.

Or you hit the wrong button and format the card, wiping it clean (which happens WAY more than it should!)

Ding! All of your precious vacation pics are gone. Fini. Nicht. Nada.

That's why you should not only have several smaller memory cards, but download your pics to a laptop, CD, or portable storage device at least every two days, if not every day.

As Sam Jackson might say, "Can ya dig it?"

I agree with WillCAD...do both! Depending on how many days you're going and how picture happy you are, even another 1 gb card will probably not be enough. I can fill my 1 gb in a day. I would look into getting a portable storage device if you don't have a laptop or plan on trekking to Walgreens or Walmart at night.
or
You could skip the extra memory card and just get a cheap PSD for around $100. Here's one that holds 30GBDIGIMATE 2 Plus

I would buy extra memory, at least you can reuse it and you'll always have it. To me, it's a waste of money to pay almost what you could buy another memory card for and download them at home for pennies.

I wish I'd transfererd my pix last year. Yes, I "lost" :sad2: my digital Cam last Sept. Had over 200 pix on the card. I left it in the rental van and or course, they didn't find it. I didn't care about the camera as much as the pix. Luckily, I took alot of pix with my regular SLR camera (and underwater, and disposables), so all was not lost.

On a couple of trips I've gone to the local Sam's Club (not too far from Super Walmart) and had my SLR and underwater cam and disposable cam (for my DD5's use) developed 1 hr. This way I don't worry about my undeveloped film being lost or ruined during xraying. Also, it's nice to look at the pix before we leave. I think this year I'll at least copy my digital to a CD "Just in case". I'm still sad about all those lost pictures.

16 days and counting!!!!!!! :cheer2: :Pinkbounc :grouphug:

How much does Sam's charge for 1-hour developing? I usually go to one of the local Walgreens, which are $7 for a roll of 24exp.

I have 3 memory cards but i still bring the laptop with me to Disney so i can transfer them onto there and have as much space as i can get.

Just outside the resort is a 24 hour Walgreens, our last 2 years we've made midweek trips there to have our pics put onto cd and start again.

Just subscribing to thread. Great info. I am planning to purchase a digital camera for our trip in December. I've looked at the Kodak easy share camera (4 megapixel & 5 megapixel) and am hoping that it will be on sale the day after Thanksgiving. That will give me about 3-4 weeks to figure out how to use it!

We paid $11.99 for a photo CD at Town Square Exhibition Hall. We paid $69.95 for 256MB Kodak SD card...ouch!

Here's the story: On our 6th day of theme parks, when we took our 276th photo, the counter went from 275 back to 1. We thought we had lost all our photos! DW, DD10, and DD7 had a huge meltdown ("why did we even bother to come here?!"), and DD10 even thought it was her fault! I finally figured out the camera had switched to internal memory. The panic subsided, but it still left me paranoid enough to buy a CD *and* an extra memory card, just in case the CD didn't work.

Rigel Kent's tips: 1. You remember how you always knew film will cost more at WDW. The same goes for memory cards, but worse! I feel pretty stupid about missing that one.

2. We get more photos on our card by setting the image quality to "Good" instead of "Best." Try it out before going, and see if you like how the 4 by 6 prints turn out. I wouldn't do it for larger prints, but it is excellent for 4x6.

3. I saved time at Town Square Exhibition Hall by having the CD made by at the front register, instead of standing in the long lines at the do-it-yourself machines. At first, the Cast Member at front said she couldn't do it, but after receiving advice from another Cast Member, I went back to the first, who admitted she had been wrong--she had thought their machine was not working.

4. Can't get the plastic packaging for your new SD card opened? The front register cast member had good scissors and did it for me!

5. Speaking of Town Square Exhibition Hall, I have to tell you (if you don't already know) to go down the hall on the left to the very back, where there is a "secret" air-conditioned theater playing Steamboat Willie and other cartoons. This was a DD10 and DD7 favorite!

I "lost" all our photos last December - photos at Cindy's Breakfast, loads of characters, MVMCP, etc and ended up buying disposable cameras in MK! (stupid me, no back-up camera in our rucksack! ) When our batteries died, the card wiped itself - well, I was devastated...

...Until I spoke to a nice man who worked for Vivitar and he managed to find my photos, put them on a CD and send them to our home. When the postman delivered the package, I was delighted. :cloud9:

I found Walgreens very reasonably priced for processing my disposable cameras and putting them on CD - they were alot cheaper than if I'd taken them all home to Scotland - and the photo quality was good.

I'm buying myself a recovery program before we go on vacation again and next time we're at WDW, I'm putting everything on CD - REGULARLY!

Ok. I brought the camera. 3 memory cards (including 1 gig card). I brought the laptop and cd writer. I forgot the blank disc.

Where can I get them? At the rate I am going I am filling in some 300MB a day and we are on day 3. So I will run out of disk space in 2 days.

Don't have a car so any buses or taxi efficiency tips is going to be appreciated.

Can you only get your memory card put on a cd if it is Kodak brand? I would love to upload my card to cd while at disney, but was unsure if it is possible. I think if would be cheaper than buying an extra card. I have a Sony cybershot.

If you can do the above where at?

MP, I think you can find blank CD-Rs in the camera shops in the parks.

You might also be able to find them in resort gift shops, especially the resorts with convention facilities such as Contemporary, Coronado Springs, and Swan & Dolphin.

You could also stop at any local Walgreens store if you happen to go off-site for anything by taxi. They all carry CD-Rs.

Absolute worst-case scenario, buy them on-line at BestBuy or Staples or maybe Amazon and have them over-nighted. This would, of course, cost a fortune.

Kelly, the brand of memory card makes no difference - it's the card format that's important. The camera shops in all 4 parks can download your pics to CDs for you, and can take all of the most common memory card formats - Compact Flash (CF), Secure Digital (SD), Sony Memory Stick, MultiMedia Card (MMC), and I'm pretty sure they can also take xD Picture Cards.

You should have no problem getting your pics onto CDs, as long as your camera doesn't use some weird new card format that WDW hasn't been set up to take yet.

You can not find blank cds in the camera shops in the resorts or at the parks including those that will download / burn cds off your cards. At least none for sale. So I'll be hitting walgreens via taxi.

Sorry MP, I hope you can get the CDs you need for a reasonable price at Walgreens.

Walgreen had very decent prices. The taxi ride (around 30$ round trip with tip) killed it!
