Absolutely! The memories made at WDW far outway a perfect attendence award. The schools here allow you to obtain work ahead of time. Making up tests when we return is a lot but even the kids agree ,well worth it.

Not sure what to pick on your poll it it a bit confusing...

But we have definately taken our kids out and will take them out again this Dec...prior to there school break...

I went this year in May and would definately do it again.

OK I might really be dense today...:):)

Ok is your question is that Do you take kids out of school who are 5-10 years old before the school year ends???

If so what do you mean by Do you take kids out of school who are 5-10 years old after school goes back?

If they are 5-10 years old what does it matter what part of the school year you are talking about...or is that your question do you take your kids out the beginning of the year or the end???

SEE I'm hopeless today..

Now I'm getting confused ;)
Generally speaking here in Canada, the school year runs from September to June (not counting Xmas and spring breaks etc).
"Before School Ends" would mean before June
"After School Goes Back" would mean after September

As a teacher, I took my DD out of school for 3 days this year and myself as well!! Obviously the best thing to do is check with the child's teacher early and let them know your child will be absent. For elementary students the timing isn't too crucial, but there are times in my state that we do testing, so you want to be sure it doesn't interfere with that. Of course as they get into middle & high school, you start dealing with exams.

We took our preschooler out for a week the first of May. (The time of year we LOVE to go!!) We might continue the trend until he gets older and becomes a problem with exams, etc.:teacher:

As ateacher,I'm pleased to see an opinion from a teaching professional.
I do (of course) agree with you 100%.
The timing of exams and testing is something that the parents would have to suss out.

We took DS (11) out of school for a May vacation. DH got a different vacation than he thought he was bidding for.
But after DS missed 12 days sick and 5 days WDW vacation we didn't dare take him out 1 day for a family wedding or a couple days for his Great Grandfathers funeral.
Teacher still seems piqued.

If the only time I could vacation was during the school year I would take my child out of school. Some people have a hard time getting time off in the summer and they deserve a family vacation. I am off all summer so I wouldn't take my child out of school. He is an average student who shouldn't be out any more than he has too. He also plays sports which he doesn't want to miss.

As a teacher in High School, I do understand when students are pulled for a family vacation. Some families can not find any other time to be together. However, there will be some teachers who will not be as understanding and may make it difficult for you and your child.

My DD is just finishing up Pre-K, so we took her out without a thought, really. We really can't stand 90+ temps. and it's much harder for DH to take vacation during the summer, so beginning of November is our favorite time to go. However, when she gets older, I'll have a dilemma, because although I feel strongly that family time is very important (esp. since DH works long hours), I don't like the message it would send to my daughter (school and education are important, but not as important as WDW).

The fact remains, however, that we'd have no choice, if we really want to go, so it's a tough decision, but one that I don't have to make yet :scratchin :confused3 ;) .

The problem with the poll is it only allows one selection, and multiple cases can apply.

When DS was 10, we took him out in September.
When he was 11, we took him out in February. (Spring break is in March for us).

We prolonged March break this year to go to Kennedy Space Center and St. Augustine.

Next year, he'll miss a couple of days in February to go to Universal.

We took our 5kids (then9,8,6,6,4) out of school in March 2003 for 10days.

And we are doing it again this coming Oct.

It seems my dh's projects never wrap-up during the summer months. We aren't going to wait around and postpone WDW trips with only the 'hope' that someday maybe work and school calenders will come into 'synch'.

Then , I guess the second to last option would apply ?
"Any age at Any Time During School Year"

That doesn't really cover it either, because we have so far only scheduled for non-critical times like early in the school year, in the middle of term so we don't need to worry about exams, and a day on either end of March break. Once he hits high school, I don't think we'd dare take him out at all. We'll have to hope for some slack in exam scheduling if we want to go away in winter, and not pay Christmas rates.

That's why I didn't choose the "any age at any time". I wouldn't take a high schooler and possibly not even a junior high schooler out of school for vacation at any time.

As far as a 5-11 year old, it wouldn't matter whether it's just after school starts or just before it ends or even if in the middle of the school year. I would take a 5-11 year old out any time during the school year.

I would take them out up until 6th grade anytime. We are going in Oct. for our next trip and pulling our daughter (who will be in 2nd grade) for two days in addition to her 2-day fall break.
Junior high and high school are different. It would depend on a lot of things -- what type of student they are, how the school and teachers feel about it, what things they will miss when gone and if the kid himself wants to miss. Some teens do not want to miss more than a couple days of school at a time because they know they will get really behind. My 16 year old nephew is like that and he is an A student.
