Has anyone taken golf clubs on plane (checked bag) and if so how much were you charged for checked "clubs".. DH and DS are going during spring break. Flying from detroit to orlando on Delta. DH was thinking of Fed Ex to send the clubs ahead but when I have checked into that I think it will be more expensive. Trying to compare. To those have traveled with golf clubs what do you normally do?

Delta Airlines Golf Clubs Policy
One golf bag is allowed as checked baggage. Checked baggage fees may apply based on travel region and total number of checked bags. Overweight baggage fees apply to bags that exceed 50 lbs. Oversized baggage fees will be waived for golf bags that exceed 62 linear inches, but bags exceeding 115 linear inches are not allowed.

One item of golfing equipment is defined as:

One golf bag containing one set of golf clubs
Golf balls and tees; and
One pair of golf shoes.

Golf clubs are allowed under the following conditions:

Golf bag is packaged within a hard-shell case
Golf bag is packaged within a soft-sided golf club travel bag after a limited release has been signed
Delta is not responsible for damage noted at the time of check-in or damage due to over-packing the bag

Thank you so much. I was on the delta website for luggage and didn't see this at all. I guess I didn't search well enough and turn to disboards. Thanks again. This is extremely helpful.

We use "Ship Sticks" you send your clubs ahead of time to your course and they are there waiting for you. When you're done playing the course sends them back to you at home. The cost is about the same as the airlines about $75 however, you don't have to deal with them while you travel. We have them sent back to us when we're home to accept them. Courses are used to Ship Sticks so they know to save the packaging material for the return trip. The airlines also don't tell you that if a plane is overweight one of the first things to go is sports equipment. We've used ship sticks a few times now and are very happy with their service. Like the airline you can send your golf bag, shoes and 1 dozen golf balls.:daisy:

Many airline's web sites are a mess. I usually just use Google to find this type of information; their search is much better than the airline's. Google "Delta Airlines golf clubs." It takes you right to the information you are seeking.
