Taking Care of Our Feet

Hi, all. I read a section in my guide book about taking care of your feet while on a Disney vacation that had some good suggestions and I'm taking them seriously. I've been looking for thin socks that "wick moisture away from the feet." Has anyone else had success following this advice for the whole family? I've found lots more specialty and specialized socks than I would have known existed. But they are all for adults, which is fine for my son and an extra small will probably work for my nine year old. Luckily the stores should be able to order in those sizes even if they don't keep them in stock. But is there anyhope that I can find something just as good for my 6 year old? If not, any opinions on the best socks to buy her?

Incidentally, anyone who's never had to deal with foot pain, might think that the travel writer's extensive and emphatic advise in this area is crazy, but I can easily imagine that it could really save us from a ruined day or two or even a whole ruined vacation. 63 days to go! :woohoo:

When we went on our first trip I got our socks at Dicks, and yes they had childrens sizes too. My kids were 5, 7 & 9..got them for the whole family, but they were pricey, 15 bucks for a package of 4, but oh so worth it. They were an under-armour brand. I very much recommend getting socks like this...we never had one blister or hot spot any of us and we were in the parks for 7 days. Good luck.

My pediatrician recommended bringing along moleskin. You can cut it and place it on any blisters that pop up. It cushions your feet so that it doesn't hurt.

Also - I am going to encourage my family to walk alot before the trip so we get used to it. :dance3:

I am a DIE HARD believer in moleskin. My feet are horrible and have always really taken a beating at Disney until this last trip. This last trip both my DD 6 and I wore crocs and had no foot trouble at all. I will recommend them to anyone who asks.

What exactly is moleskin and where do you buy it?

Moleskin is like a very thick band aid in a way. It is fuzzy on one size and super sticky on the other. If you get a blister you cut a circle of moleskin and cut the middle out, letting the blister pop through. That way when you walk, no pressure is put on the blister because when you step, the moleskin takes the pressure. If you have a "hot spot" or "pre blister" you can just cover the whole thing which prevents friction, so the blister won't form. You can buy it in any drugstore/Mart store/Supermarket with first aid stuff.

We bought our DD sports socks. May I second the Crocs idea! All 9 of us wore them on our trip in August, I only wore my sneakers once and ended up changing back to Crocs mid day when we stopped at our room. I wore socks with my Crocs at times too. Have a magical trip!

Thanks to all for the info and discussion! I think I'm going to go ahead and get the two layer, anti-blister socks made by Wright Sock for most of us and I'll go to Dick's and find some of the under-armour for my six year old. Then I'll have to look for good walking shoes. So now I know that I should consider Crocs, which I never had heard of until a couple of days ago. Thanks again!

Thanks for the info. I always have problems with my feet after Disney. We also walk a lot months beforehand to get used to it, but my feet always seem to have problems. I'm going to try the socks for sure.

Yeah, I got a blister last time... didn't realize how much walking I was going to do. So yes, this time I'm going to take care of my feet! Thanks for the topic!

Body Glide. Found it at EMS.
You can find moisture wicking socks at Target.
Both worked perfectly.
No blisters on any of us.

Sorry, Eastern Mountain Sports.
I'm sure you can find BodyGlide online, though.
It looks like a deodorant stick. Apply all over your feet or anywhere else that might chafe (thighs, arms, etc).

Thanks. :thumbsup2

I found the Wright Sock double layer, blister free socks at an event for runners at the convention center today and I also saw the body glide. So I'll go to Dicks or Target soon for socks small enough for my littlest one. I am getting a little more ready for our trip everyday. yay! :thumbsup2
