Hi there - my sister and I will be taking her 11 month old to WDW. Her husband won't be joining us, so do we need some sort of permission from him to take the baby through customs? They're still married, he just can't come... or am I worrying about nothing?

Stupid question - Would he be a lap child at 11 months or do we need to buy a seat for him?

I obviously have no experience with children!

Thanks!!!

I would get a notarized letter signed by the father allowing the child to travel without both parents. I was asked for it by Canada Customs returning into Canada at Pearson once when I was travelling alone with my 2 daughters, no problems going into the States, but returning home was an issue.

I travelled several times without getting a seat for an under 2 child, it just depends on what you are comfortable with. We tended to travel at off times and I think all but 1 time there were empty seats on the plane, but it you want your child secure in a car seat, then you need to pay for the seat.

My daughter and I travelled to Disney this Jan. without my husband. US customs did ask to see a letter from him.
For piece of mind I always pay the small fee for the notarized leter from the lawyer.
I have also been asked to show one to US customs when driving. (April '07)
Have never been asked to show one when returning to Canada.

I've travel with my daughter to the UK had the notarized letter but was never asked to show it.

If you can afford the a seat for the 11 month old go for it and you can bring her car seat on the plane.

Check with the specific airline for their policy.

When are you traveling? We'll be down at March break.

Here's a link to what you need documentation wise...

I have travelled many, many times with my kids without my DH along and my mother has also taken the kids out of the country. I have never been asked for a document but one time when my mother had my dd they asked my dd who she was travelling with. Even though I have never needed the letter I always have one.

My mother is taking my kids away for March Break and this time my DH is having a letter typed at work on his company letterhead. We will both sign it but we are not getting it notarized this time. My oldest DD is now 18 so not an issue anymore and the other one is 9. We feel comfortable that the 9yo can speak for herself in terms of who she is with etc. Both girls are taking their passports.

BTW....Mississauga City Hall will notarize a letter for $25. Lawyers charge between $50 -$75. I would guess that any city hall will also do it.
