Dinner was at San Angel Inn Sunday evening. I know lots of people dont like this place but I had been once before and really enjoyed it. I think sometimes people expect the Mexican food we get at home and that is why they are disappointed.
I ordered the filet. It was good but could have had more flavor. My cheese wasnt completely melted. But I would eat this dish again. I love the plantains. All of the components worked so well together. The sauce on the bottom really complimented the meat very well.
Larry didnt really get to choose his dish here. Some of the ladies of the DIS wondered what the Duck with the berry sauce was like and couldnt find any reviews of the dish. So we volunteered Larry to try the dish and take one for the team. ;-) After reading the description of the dish he agreed. He was so thankful he did! Besides being presented beautifully the dish had a wonderful taste. The breast was so tender that you didnt even need teeth to chew it, but it wasnt mush either. It melted in your mouth. Underneath the sliced duck breast was shredded duck. Larry said the berries were more than just a garnish, that they were a perfect compliment to the duck. He says it was somewhere between chicken and beef. The duck was even more tender than my steak. He said this is tied for first place as his favorite dish.
This was the perfect dish for Larry because he isn't really a veggie fan. But later you will see where we had a little change in this.
He is still telling people about this duck dish. I think he wishes we had gone back for another round here as well.
We werent on the dining plan yet and we didnt get dessert.
Larrys take on San Angel: I loved it all, the scenery, the atmosphere, everything. The people were friendly. The food was the best part, it was awesome!
What we learned here and at other restaurants including Yak & Yeti is to try something a little different, not what you would usually get at home. It paid off! You have to keep your mind open and really experience the "local" flavor. I know I played it safe with the steak but I had it last time and loved it so much I just had to get it again.
