Taking a shot at a dining review - Our Honeymoon - Now Complete

Dinner was at San Angel Inn Sunday evening. I know lots of people don’t like this place but I had been once before and really enjoyed it. I think sometimes people expect the Mexican food we get at home and that is why they are disappointed.

I ordered the filet. It was good but could have had more flavor. My cheese wasn’t completely melted. But I would eat this dish again. I love the plantains. All of the components worked so well together. The sauce on the bottom really complimented the meat very well.

Larry didn’t really get to choose his dish here. Some of the ladies of the DIS wondered what the Duck with the berry sauce was like and couldn’t find any reviews of the dish. So we volunteered Larry to try the dish and take one for the team. ;-) After reading the description of the dish he agreed. He was so thankful he did! Besides being presented beautifully the dish had a wonderful taste. The breast was so tender that you didn’t even need teeth to chew it, but it wasn’t mush either. It melted in your mouth. Underneath the sliced duck breast was shredded duck. Larry said the berries were more than just a garnish, that they were a perfect compliment to the duck. He says it was somewhere between chicken and beef. The duck was even more tender than my steak. He said this is tied for first place as his favorite dish.

This was the perfect dish for Larry because he isn't really a veggie fan. But later you will see where we had a little change in this.

He is still telling people about this duck dish. I think he wishes we had gone back for another round here as well.

We weren’t on the dining plan yet and we didn’t get dessert.

Larry’s take on San Angel: “I loved it all, the scenery, the atmosphere, everything. The people were friendly. The food was the best part, it was awesome!”

What we learned here and at other restaurants including Yak & Yeti is to try something a little different, not what you would usually get at home. It paid off! You have to keep your mind open and really experience the "local" flavor. I know I played it safe with the steak but I had it last time and loved it so much I just had to get it again.

Hey girlfriend, I had no idea you started your reviews! Some of these DIS people have nerve, having Larry try something for them........ I owe you Larry!:thumbsup2

You have to watch out for those crazy DISers who force you to try dishes for them. :rotfl:

On the way back to our room last night (Monday) we stopped at the Boardwalk Bakery to pick up a few things for breakfast this morning since Tuesday was moving day. We had a little to snack on then we checked out and headed over to SSR by a Town Car. After we checked in and left our bags we were off to the Animal Kingdom. It was after 10 o’clock when we got to the AK so we had to push back our 11 o’clock Yak & Yeti lunch until about 2 o’clock. We were getting hungry so we split a double cheeseburger.

After a while we finally made our way over to Yak & Yeti. I have to say this was another reservation I had considered canceling after reading how many DISers were unhappy with their food. But we decided to give it a shot after all.

This was our first meal on the Deluxe Dining Plan. For appetizers Larry ordered the Pot Stickers and I ordered the Lettuce Cups. The Lettuce Cups were something I’ve wanted to try at local restaurants but was just afraid to spend the money on. But since I knew I would have more than enough food to make up for it if I hated them I decided why not.

If you have the slightest idea you might like these order them. My husband who is not a veggie fan and who will only lettuce in a Caesar Salad LOVED these. He loved them so much he ordered them when we went back later in our trip. To maximize the dish you really need to include all of the ingredients. The only warnings I have is that the meat filling is rather hot so you should put some of the cold veggies on the bottom to protect your fingers. The other warning is that you will eat too many.

These pot stickers are very close to the ones at Ohana’s. I think I liked Ohana’s just a tad bit better though.

When it came to the entrée I had difficulty deciding between the Baby Back Ribs and Beef with Broccoli. Here is where the decision to go outside of my normal boundaries came into play. I do NOT like ribs. They are too messy and just don’t taste good enough. Well Larry was torn between the Ribs and the Mahi Mahi. I told him I would order the ribs so he could try them as well. Boy was I glad I did! They were amazing. There was just enough sweetness and the meat was perfectly cooked. I was able to take the meat off the bone just using my fork.

The rice was very good as well. The slaw only had one bite by me because I wasn’t giving up any room that could go to the rice or ribs. As you can see Larry helped me to eat the ribs and he enjoyed them as well.

On to Larry’s entrée – the Crispy Mahi Mahi. He had never had Mahi Mahi before so he really didn’t know what to expect. Our server gave this dish high recommendations.

The colors of this dish are so beautiful and vibrant. As you can see above in Larry’s rib pictures the fish completely disappeared from his plate. This dish is tied for first place as his favorite dish. He said he can’t pick a favorite between the Crispy Mahi Mahi and the duck at San Angel Inn.

We were both so full from our lunches but thought we would eat a little dessert anyway. I asked if I could have half a serving of the wontons. Sadly they would not let me get only half a serving. I was too full to attempt to eat the entire thing so I was trying to “protect” myself. You can see my fat rolls here and I was trying to keep them from expanding any more.

These were SO good. The sauce wasn’t too sweet. Everything was a perfect compliment to one another.

Larry decided to try the Sorbet.

He liked the Mango the best. I tried the lemon and it had a very fresh and not overly heavy taste.

Larry’s take on Yak & Yeti: “It is very beautiful on the inside, they have statues, displays of art that are really nice, dark wood, light paint to accent as well as friendly wait staff along with a low noise level make for a really good atmosphere. The food was some of the best that I’ve ever had, not just in the parks but over all. It doesn’t look that way from the outside but it’s really sharp on the inside and it’s about the best value of any table service restaurants that you will find on Disney property. And unlike some table service restaurants you really get what you pay for, not just in quality and taste, but also in portion. You will leave full. :goodvibes ”

Since the park was so busy we didn’t get to do many things. We never even made it to Africa this day or even beyond Yak & Yeti towards Asia.

We headed to the MK for MVMCP. We enjoyed the hot chocolate and snacks they had available but never ate dinner. Larry enjoyed the cookies and I got the apple slices. The hot chocolate was so yummy.

By the time we got back to our room we were hungry and ready for something to eat but since it was after Midnight everything at the resort was closed so we just went to sleep.

Time for bed. I'll try to post more tomorrow. Thanks for reading!

Enjoying your review so far! I can't wait to go to WDW on my honeymoon in October! :)

congrats!!! Great reviews so far. Yak and Yeti looks fantastic. I think we may have lunch here on our trip.

loved your review of Yak and Yeti, sadly I can't persuade my family to try it yet. Going to Ohana for breakfast for first time in February and it looks great.

We must plan Y&Y for our next trip. We had ADR's last time and had to cancel because I stupidly planned lunch there after a BOMA breakfast.:rolleyes1

Congrats on wedding, & great choice for a honeymoon! Really enjoying your reviews---great pictures. Keep em coming! Glad to see a positive review of Yak & Yeti & San Angel Inn. We want to try both of these in May. :thumbsup2

Yes, please ! ! ! Lovin it so far - I like your review style. . . .

Thank you. I was hoping it wasn't annoying.

I don't know why we didn't bend the menu to only see one page at a time. Sorry. Hope these pics help.

You have sold me on Yak & Yeti. I have been reading more and more good reviews of the place, but this clinched it! I will be calling tomorrow to make my ADR for my March trip!

**Inserting Important Public Service Announcement**

If you are at all considering Yak & Yeti PLEASE try your best to work it in and be adventurous. Like I've already said we enjoyed it so much that we went to eat there twice. What I haven't told you yet is that I cancelled a Le Cellier lunch to eat at Yak & Yeti the second time.

I know, I know. But that is how much we liked it!

And I lied, I think it will be tomorrow before I get another review up.

Thank you all for the kind comments - it really means a lot since I know I'm not good at getting the things out of my head in a way to make sense to anyone other than me.

Yay! You just made my night. I hope you or at least one person in your party will try the ribs. I hope your meal is as great as ours were.

Michelle - You are awesome at this my friend!:thumbsup2 I'm STRONGLY thinking about Yak & Yeti for next trip. We have our eyes on the appetizers, specifically the fried green beans and the egg rolls!:goodvibes

Your reviews are amazing - they make really good sense to me - but then I am a DIS Maniac (as DH affectionately calls me)!

Remember that you owe me. ;) Maybe I'll call that one in by asking you very kindly to go to Yak & Yeti. :rolleyes1 The fried green beans looked SO good but I just had to try the Lettuce Cups instead. I swear they give you too many good options and not enough room in our stomachs! If you do go and want to try the ribs I'd suggest you split it with someone - that gives you more room for appetizers anyway. :flower3:

Thank you for your kind words.
